Diabetes – What NOT to Eat

Thursday, June 27, 2013

I have been pretty good at sticking to a diabetic diet—of course being human I slip once in a while. I went out with my Mom on Saturday for our weekly shopping excursion and of course she got hungry (nothing new there) and decided that we should eat at a Chinese Buffet place that she had actually liked once. Okay—I had my doubts—but who is going to argue with Mom? And I hadn’t been to a Chinese Buffet in a very long time-----This particular buffet has a lot of American type dishes as well as Chinese which is why my Mom liked it.

So, I pile up my plate with Muscles, Shrimp (both cooked and raw), Crab, stuffed clams, Mushrooms, Green beans, a spring roll, an egg roll and boneless spare ribs—well not piled it up really—but I did go back for seconds! Then I hit the desserts—Jello, Chocolate pudding, 1 macaroon and 1 almond cookie. Oh—I ordered iced tea as a beverage. My Mom was much better then I was—chicken (a couple of types) some lo mein, green beans and some other veggie-for dessert she had a plate full of fruit.

The trouble began with the iced tea. I proceeded to put in 1 sweet n low—and took a long drink—tasted a bit sweet but then I like sweet. My Mom took one sip and started complaining—turns out it was SWEET TEA—she had it switched to diet Coke—I kept drinking the tea. Meanwhile it became apparent to me that almost everything was in some kind of sauce-other then the cold shrimp. Now sauces (which I normally do not like anyway) generally are high in sugar. I also have a bad gallbladder which is why I normally stay away from fried foods (spring roll, egg roll). By the time I got up to leave that restaurant-I was not feeling too well. I was experiencing hot then cold shivers, my stomach was killing me, I could barely stand up and I certainly was not going to tell my Mom! Turns out she was not feeling all that well either. But since Mom still had things we had to accomplish off I drove. My last stop was a CVS to pick up some seltzer for her. I really thought I was going to pass out while waiting to pay—the pain was excruciating and I was dizzy!!

Well, I got her home then got myself home. Needless to say I had nothing to eat last night. I knew my sugar was high as a kite and suspected my gallbladder was also giving me trouble. I probably should have taken a metformin but didn’t. I could barely lie down and it was impossible to sit at my computer—I chewed up 7 Tums (more sugar) and 2 Gas-x (more sugar)—I finally got to sleep. It took until just a little while ago (almost 15 hours) for my sugar to go down and for my gallbladder to relax and for me to feel semi human.

Moral of this tale—if you are going to eat out—be VERY careful what you put on your plate-stay away from sauces unless you make them-and ASK about the iced tea—you want it UNSWEETENED!!

Be careful out there!!! I can just imagine what all they put in their dishes there. I think it would be very hard to go out to eat with your condition. Hope your week is better.

I'm Diabetic and understand your problem. Why didn't you take the metform? Don't you have a regular time to take your pills?
I'm on insulin 2 kinds and it's harder to control, but I'm working on it, usually no eating out. No prepackaged meals - cook my self and have what I want without all that I do not want. Good Luck with everything.

I am not a big fan of buffets because every time I go to one I end with a stomach ache....

Hope your tummy is doing better now. Sending hugs your way!

I completely understand how hard it is to eat out with a health condition. It's gotten to the point it is easier to eat at home. Now if I could just find a way to enjoy the kitchen.

Been there, done that! My husband and I love Chinese buffets, and it is very hard to not get the meat with all the sauce because it's so good. I usually eat whatever I want, but in small amounts. One splurge day a week is what keeps me sane.

I'm glad you're feeling better!

I would be the worst diabetic ever! I have such a sweet tooth all the time and when I have a craving, I usually go for it! My grandpa was a diabetic and he had such a difficult time with a lot of food. So I know it definitely is not fun!

I'm so sorry to hear that what should have been a nice evening out for you turned out to be so unpleasant. I don't have any health problems, but for my own personal reasons I am very conscientious about my food choices so whenever I eat out I always ask for the nutrition facts (most restaurant chains have these readily available). One funny side effect is that this always leads them to believe I am a restaurant reviewer or mystery shopper so we get excellent service and visits from the manager to ensure everything is ok!

Chinese buffets are my downfall

Sorry to hear that happened, my grandma had diabetes and she always drank sugar free or unsweetened tea. She did on the occasion eat stuff she shouldn't though and it effected her.

My dad had diabetes and it was really limited back then what you could have. I wish more restaurants would recognize this as a bigger issue. Several of them are going healthier which is great hopefully they will incorporate more things for diabetics. Glad you are okay, it could have been a lot worse.

I don't know anyone with diabetes. I know that I do enjoy chinese buffets though, as does my husband.

I am glad you are ok but you need to be careful. I too wish diabetes was more recognized in restaurants because there are so many with this disease.

oh no that sounds like a nightmare! It is difficult to eat a well balanced meal at most restaurants without being diabetic. I imagine that is really challenging. Be careful with your gallbladder..I had mine removed 20 years ago.

Oh no, we had a bad experience from a Chinese restaurant as well so after that, we stopped going there. We do drink sweet tea though when we dine at a restaurant.

I'm sorry to hear your bad experience at the Chinese restau. I love going there but I need to stop, for my husband's sake as I really want to help him lose weight and not become a diabetic like his Mom.

We don't go to buffet that much and yeah we really need to be careful of the foods being served in those kind of restaurant esp if we do have some condition.

my grandma is diabetic, it's good to know things about her illness. thank you for sharing.

My Mother is a diabetic, so she has to make sure she eats those foods she likes moderately, ESP sweets. But that doesn't stop her sometimes, she's stubborn and insulin dependent. Sad to think she had the hardest time to control eating.

Wow! I'm not a diabetic, but Chinese restaurants are my weak spot. I do have hypoglycemic episodes which seem to come on hours after a Chinese feast coupled with heartburn that would shame Mount Vesuvius, so I can empathize on some level.
