Book Review-One Night of Scandal (Fairleigh Sisters Book 2)-Teresa Medeiros
Tuesday, December 7, 2021
I have been reading and loving all of Teresa Medeiros' books long before I even heard of social media! When ever I would spot one in the bookstore I would grab it and devour it!! There are actually a couple I have read and reviewed on my blog as well--I will never get tired of her books!!
Carlotta Anne Fairleigh is not your usual staid young lady--she climbs out windows and down trees and is as curious as a cat. Luckily her brother in law is high up in society and manages to get her out of most of her misadventures. This time she went too far--her curiosity about the reclise who lived next door--well it was too much for her to ignore--so out the window and down she went to try and get a glimpse of this man. Never mind that it was the evening of her coming out ball----
Well, disaster struck and she was caught and ended up marrying this total stranger--There are parts that had me shaking my head in disbelief--and others where I was laughing. All's well that ends well for everyone. I highly suggest you read this one--I read it straight through and enjoyed every second of it!!
About the Book: (from Amazon)
Proper decorum has never come easily to Carlotta Anne Fairleigh—not even tonight, when the lovely, impetuous miss is finally making her debut. As she waits to make her entrance, she can't help wondering about the darkened house next door, the supposedly abandoned home of Hayden St. Clair, the man society has dubbed the "Murderous Marquess." Certainly one small peek through his window before the festivities would be harmless . . .
And, naturally, this latest "adventure" ends in disaster, thoroughly compromising the budding debutante's reputation and leaving her suddenly, unthinkably . . . betrothed! Soon she's en route to the wilds of Cornwall in the company of the handsome, mysterious marquess whose name the ton whisper with fear and loathing.
Yet there is something thrilling—and surprisingly tender—about her dark, unreachable groom, and the desire in his eyes is undeniable. But before Lottie will surrender to the yearnings in her heart, she must unlock the secrets of Hayden's past, no matter how scandalous—or perilous—they may be.

Mesothelioma--One Man's Story
Monday, December 19, 2016
Back in 2013 I was asked by the Mesothelioma organization to post about this rare but deadly form of cancer caused by asbestos. You can read it here
Virgil contacted me just the other day and asked if I could post about Mesothelioma which he has! I said of course and he sent his bio to me which you can read below.
Mr. Anderson was born and raised in Williamson, WV. His father, a coal miner, passed when Virgil was 8 years old. Virgil worked in demolition work and excavating since high school. This required the physical tear out, and hands on removal of asbestos containing insulation in walls, ceiling, attics and heating and cooling systems. To remove this required saws and sledge hammers all of which sent the asbestos fibers flying into the air. Unfortunately for Virgil the material had to not only be freed from its location but also picked up and carried to the disposal area. Once asbestos is disturbed it can stay in the air for 5 days. On some occasions there was a haze of dust and debris that you could actually taste in your mouth. He also came in contact with asbestos while working on his family’s farm. Virgil was recently diagnosed with mesothelioma, which is a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
When he was diagnosed with mesothelioma he needed immediate medical attention. He found a few websites on the internet that are supposed to help people with mesothelioma cancer but nobody got back to him.
Then he found Mesothelioma.net. Even though he contacted them on a Sunday one of their patient advocates gave him a call back within minutes. They gave him a great deal of helpful information on doctors and resources available to him.
As a result of their website, he is now being treated at the national cancer institute and the patient advocates have even provided him with financial assistance so he could afford a place to live during his chemotherapy. If he had not reached out to this website he would likely be homeless and more importantly in Hospice waiting to die. These people gave him his only chance at survival.
This man helped clean up our environment and has/is paying the price. Thank heavens there is a place that really cares! Won't you click in to Mesothelioma.net and read about the wonderful things they do

November is National Diabetes Month
Tuesday, November 1, 2016
As most of you may realize I am a diabetic. I even have a separate category on my blog called Diabetes Saga. If you want click into Miki's Hope and scroll down to Labels on the left side bar-it has about 19 posts in there! I am one of the lucky ones who has managed to control it with diet and 2 Metformin pills a day. I don't need Insulin and hope I never do, Just the other day I received a notice under my door. The part that caught my immediate attention was that if you use syringes to administer Insulin (or other medications I assume)--that you are not allowed to throw them in the garbage-even if they are contained in a plastic container. Now I know for a fact that pharmacies will not take back unused medication-they will not dispose of it. I have no idea if hospitals will take these syringes and put them in the hazardous red boxes. What in the world are these people going to do? If anyone knows please write it in a comment below!! Diabetes is so prevalent it is frightening.
Today I received not one but two requests to spread the word. I have received nothing for this post!! I have it listed under my Charity tab.
If you or a friend or a loved one has diabetes won't you please consider signing up and become a Diabetic Advocate or perhaps you would like to join in on theTourdeCure. There are many other activities where you can help as well as keeping yourself fit.
The second email was about a site the American Diabetes Organization runs called Gift of Hope. There are some really nice items in there for holiday gift giving. Of course there are other items as well, All proceeds help the American Diabetes Organization with its important work! There is an online catalogue where you can view all they have to offer.
I hope you are able to help--even if it is giving a dollar or two when asked by a store you frequent. Every little bit helps!

Story Shares’s Annual Relevant Reads Writing Contest 8/23/16 - 12/31/16
Friday, August 26, 2016
As most of you know I am all about reading and literacy! So when asked to promote this contest for Story Shares-a non-profit organization-I said YES--and no charge. I have received nothing for posting this and actually I have copied/pasted the publicity blurb sent to me (with permission from the publicist). Please share this with friends, teachers and anyone else who you think might be interested.
Story Shares’s annual Relevant Reads writing contest develops fresh content for its broad network of readers across 44 states and 26 countries who are working to improve their literacy skills.
Boston, Massachusetts – Story Shares, a nonprofit organization devoted to inspiring reading practice and improving literacy skills, is launching their annual Relevant Reads writing contest. The contest opens August 23, 2016 with a submission deadline of December 31, 2016. The contest is seeking submissions from 1,000 to 10,000 words in a variety of genres including historical fiction, horror/suspense, fantasy, and overall diversity so that every reader is able to find his or her reflection in the books available. The contest also has a “For Teens by Teens” category and accepts submissions by youth under the age of 18 who wish to contribute their unique voices to the organization’s growing library.
The goal of the Story Shares writing contest is to generate compelling and approachable content for readers who are in middle school, high school, and beyond while also using language that makes it more accessible and approachable for those who struggle with reading. Throughout the four month submissions window, the organization seeks to generate hundreds of such stories for their collection of books that are easy to read, and hard to put down.
Like most writing contests, the Story Shares Relevant Reads contest offers cash prizes ranging from $500 to $3,000, along with publication in both digital and print form. But unlike most writing contests, those who submit their work to Story Shares have a real opportunity to make a difference. The organization has established a broad network of readers across 44 states and 26 countries who are waiting for fresh content to consume. These readers use the stories in Story Shares library, either themselves or together with their teachers, to improve literacy skills.
Writers will not only have a wide audience at their disposal, but even more importantly, their stories will become a part of the organization’s mission to change the literacy landscape for teens and young adults who struggle to read.
“Our writers and the stories they submit have an enormous impact. Tens of millions of teens and young adults lack the literacy skills needed to read the books written for their age and interests,” says Louise Baigelman, co-founder and executive director for Story Shares. “The value of literacy is so often understated when really it is a critical stone in the foundation of a quality life and a strong-functioning society. Each book reaches thousands upon thousands of students, improving their abilities to read and write while preparing them for greater academic and professional success.”
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, as many as 90 million teens and adults in America lack crucial literacy skills, and they don’t have the tools they need to change that. Just 13 percent of African-American, 16 percent of Hispanic-American and 18 percent of American Indian fourth graders score at the proficient level. Close to 70 percent of high school students need some form of reading remediation, and two out of every three students who cannot read proficiently by the end of fourth grade end up in prison or on welfare.
Given the daily importance of reading in all aspects of life, lacking this crucial skill negatively impacts everything from academic performance to everyday communication. It also creates a cycle that is difficult to break. A lack of literacy skills makes it difficult for adults to stay informed, to participate fully in society, to continue to learn, and to raise their children as readers.
“The Story Shares annual writing contest enables us to build out our library of Relevant Reads, which meets the needs of the millions of readers who don’t currently have a shelf of their own in the library,” adds Baigelman. “The books produced through our first two contests have inspired students who previously hated reading to read and write. In addition, they have provided teachers with the tools they need to engage their discouraged students.”
Story Shares’s work empowers and inspires many kinds of struggling readers including English language learners, students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, and students from low-income communities who have fallen behind in literacy skills and reading comprehension. The organization’s mission is truly a matter of changing an entire landscape.

Life is Good Tour Coming To Your City to Help Kids in Need & #GROWtheGood (Tour Ends Late Oct)
Sunday, September 13, 2015
I only wish I could go to NYC when this event is there--so in lieu of that I decided I would promote this on my 65th birthday! I have always and still truly believe that every child in America and around the world deserves the best that we all can give them. No child should be hungry, or homeless or cold or lacking in the necessities of a good life. I think I need to go and buy this book as a present to myself--or maybe one of the tee shirts. Heaven knows I can not take a photo! So why don't you check to see what day the Life is Good van may be visiting your town. If you can't attend there is still something all you photo bugs can do!
"Optimists anywhere can #GROWtheGood by snapping a photo and telling the world something good that happened today. For each #GROWtheGood moment shared on Twitter or Instagram, Life is Good will provide one dollar of support to help kids in need. The tour and #GROWtheGood can be followed at lifeisgood.com/thetour."
Life is Good® Founders Hit the Road on First-Ever Nationwide Optimism Tour
8 weeks, 40 communities, 3,000 miles to #GROWtheGood and help raise over $1 million for kids in need
Boston, MA (Sept. 8, 2015) – Optimistic lifestyle brand Life is Good® announced today the kickoff of its first-ever Life is Good Tour – an eight-week experience rallying communities nationwide to #GROWtheGood by focusing on the good in the world and supporting kids who need it most. Traveling in a custom designed Airstream® trailer, the road trip, led by brothers and Life is Good founders Bert and John Jacobs, will visit more than 40 communities across America throughout fall 2015 to help people discover, embrace and spread optimism. The tour comes on the heels of the successful release of Life is Good: The Book: How to Live with Purpose and Enjoy the Ride (National Geographic Books).
“After several years on the road, broke and about to give up on our t-shirt business, John and I had a realization that would forever change the course of our lives, and would ultimately ignite our brand,” said Bert Jacobs, Co-founder Life is Good. “The time we spent selling t-shirts across the country, out of our old minivan, allowed us to meet and connect with amazing people, some who had overcome incredible adversity. We realized that life isn’t easy, and life isn’t perfect -- but life is good. Our fall road trip for optimism will be a chance to #GROWtheGood in the communities and connect with the people that gave us our start.”
During the road trip, Life is Good will help to raise over $1 million to support kids in need, partnering with organizations including Pencils of Promise, Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation for No Kid Hungry, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Boys & Girls Club through the WorldVentures Foundation, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, Born This Way Foundation and Zac Brown’s Camp Southern Ground. In addition to charity events, the Life is Good Tour will visit schools, parks, beaches, sporting events and more, engaging the community in #GROWtheGood experiences including surprise concerts, interactive photo booths, fundraisers, group games, random acts of kindness, book signings and an 8-foot-tall Gratitude Jar filled over the course of the tour with messages of thanks. Official tour t-shirts and other merchandise will be for available for sale, with 100% of net profits going back to help kids who are overcoming the impact of violence, poverty and illness.
“Life is Good is, and always has been, a purpose driven company,” said Life is Good Co-founder John Jacobs. “The tour is a continuation of our purpose: to affirm life and help kids in need. It’s about more than just monetary donations, it’s an opportunity for us to be on the ground, supporting and connecting with communities across the country, from donating musical instruments in New Orleans, to building a basketball court in Long Beach to sponsoring a run/walk through the San Francisco Zoo.”

Goodshop Sunday Promises To Bring The Holiday Spirit Back To Cyber Week
Friday, August 28, 2015
THE MOST POWERFUL COUPONS ON EARTH
As you may or may not be aware I will sometimes post about a charitable event or one of great importance without any compensation what so ever--this is one of those posts. I will bring this post back nearer to the event date to remind everyone!
JJ Ramberg host of MSNBC’s Your Business one of the co-founders of Goodshop.com wrote the following post. The national event will take place on Sunday, November 29.
By Offering Thousands Of Exclusive Savings and Double Donations, Goodshop Sunday Is The Day To Do Your Online Shopping This Holiday Season.
SAN FRANCISCO, August 26, 2015-- Goodshop.com -- the company known for its innovative “coupons for good” shopping website -- announced its second annual Goodshop Sunday event to be held on November 29, 2015, the Sunday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. For the second year in a row, Goodshop.com will be offering Goodshop Sunday as an antidote to an oft-lamented holiday shopping season that many feel is devoid of holiday spirit.
Last year, the day was marked with a viral twitter campaign #GoodshopSunday, and was featured by many major press outlets (such as Good Morning America, and the Today Show). It also received support from many in the celebrity world, including Orange Is The New Black’s Danielle Brooks and Twilight’s Kellan Lutz.
Participating in Goodshop Sunday has never been easier. Leading up to Goodshop Sunday, thousands of stores will list their best coupons and deals on Goodshop.com. In order to take advantage of both the deals and donations, users simply select their desired cause (ranging from The American Cancer Society to a local SPCA) when they sign up on Goodshop.com’s website. Once a cause has been chosen: the online world of deals and discounts awaits-- with each participating merchant offering donations anywhere from 1% to 15% of the final purchase price.
According to a recent Goodshop Consumer Survey, conducted through Survey Monkey, 76% of American consumers wish that they could be doing more during the holidays to support the causes they care about, and 87% report that it makes a difference to them whether or not the products that they buy support a cause in some way. Across the board, American consumers lament the fact that there isn’t more opportunity for them to give back during the holiday season, which they view as directly due to the amount of time and money they spend on buying gifts for their loved ones. This is made clear when you look at the numbers further: 47% of consumers reported that they would spend more money during the holidays if they knew that their purchases would be giving back.
Goodshop.com provides a remedy to this problem with a simple solution: Goodshop Sunday. A “coupons-for-good” shopping day nestled in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, for consumers to do their holiday shopping without having to sacrifice the holiday spirit that brings them there in the first place. Their motto, “You Shop. You Save. We Give” encapsulates what the day will entail: the chance to shop at the best merchants, save with access to thousands of online coupons, and give back with every dime spent. In addition, on Goodshop Sunday, select retailers will be upping the stakes by offering exciting double donations and Goodshop exclusive deals.
The impact of buying your holiday gifts on Goodshop Sunday is significant.
“According to the National Retail Federation, Americans will spend over $100 billion online on holiday shopping this year,” said Scott Garell, Goodshop CEO. “With an average of nearly 3% of our sales going to nonprofits and schools, Goodshoppers have the potential to make a huge philanthropic impact with their holiday shopping this season.”
So far, Goodshoppers have helped raise nearly $12 million for the 110,000 nonprofits and schools that Goodshop.com partners with. Additionally, Goodshop coupons have helped save people over $100 million.
Heralded as “The best way to save money and give back” while shopping online and a method of commerce that is “in great need”—Goodshop Sunday promises to make a real impact on how shopper’s approach gift-buying this November.
About Goodshop.com:
Headquartered in San Francisco, CA, Goodshop.com is the go-to place to save money online. Through its innovative online platform, Goodshop.com has forged a connection between retail savings and non-profit and school fundraising—by creating coupons that give back. Not only does it provide the best coupons and deals at thousands of stores including Target, Kohl’s, Old Navy, and Macy’s, but if you select a nonprofit or school to support, it donates a percentage of the purchase from many of these stores back to that organization. Launched in 2006, the Goodshop.com family of sites has raised nearly $12 million for its participating causes.

Mesothelioma - A Rare Form of Lung Cancer
Saturday, November 23, 2013
When the Community Outreach Director for the contacted me and asked that I put some information up on my blog about this rare form of lung cancer, caused by the inhalation of asbestos particles-which if you have watched TV-have heard lawyers talking about, I of course said yes. I actually had not realized that this was Lung cancer month. I originally was going to try and do some research but when I went to the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance website I realized that anything you would ever need to know is right there!

My Cousin Survived Breast Cancer--Attitude is Everything
Wednesday, October 23, 2013
My cousin, Sharon, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer about 1 1/2 years ago. Well I have to say from day one her attitude was marvelous! She was going to do what she had to do, go where she had to go and beat it. And nothing was going to get her down. She even went on a trip in between the radiation and the chemo sessions. Now this is the cousin who is always saying she wants to grow up to be like my Mom (Sharon is a couple of years older then I am, my Mom is a young 91!). She definitely did it--she is now cancer free and does not have to go back to get checked for another 6 months.
She was so up and positive about everything that the people at Beth Isreal actually have asked her to help other cancer patients-talk to them, etc. AND they asked her to speak at the "Get Pinkd" annual fund raiser in NYC for the Beth Israel Appel-Venet Comprehensive Breast Center.
Here she is speaking to the crowd!
From the "Get Pinkd" donation card: An incredible organization, the Beth Israel Appel-Venet Comprehensive Breast Center is one of the largest breast cancer programs in NYC and serves thousands of patients and their families. Proceeds from Get Pink'd support clinical trials and research in new surgical techniques, innovations in medical therapy and improvements in early detection of breast cancer.
Sharon's personal addition: Please consider donating today - no amount is too small. www.getpinkd.org. Thank you.
This link will take you to the event so don't get scared by the amounts shown up top! Really any donation is appreciated and if you scroll down there is a place to donate whatever amount you feel you can afford.

Margo Manhattan-BreastCancerAwareness-Relay
Friday, October 11, 2013
There are certain things in our lives that take a course of a "staple." Not the one that binds paper materials together, rather fusing social lives and people's expression of it.
Margo Manhattan has a reputation of a Socially Aware Designer who puts her passion for philanthropy into her art of bringing social consciousness up a notch with every decade.
We tend to get used to things and forget what the origin is. Thus the fate of "cleenex," as we call it any tissue paper we use. The same honorable fate lies with the Pink Ribbon of Breast Cancer Awareness.
Margo Manhattan was the one to design the first Pink Ribbon for several cancer fund-raising efforts, including Estee Lauder's Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Today, Margo's visionary designs continue to live on and take the shape of her personal expression of life in jewelry.
A portion of all sales made this month would go towards Breast Cancer Research.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month-A Happy Ending!
Saturday, October 6, 2012
It is October, breast cancer awareness month. My cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer this year but with the awesome help and guidance of her primary physician (and her own indomitable spirit!) she has come through the operation and is looking forward to a long, long life filled with travel!!
I asked what I could do and found out that my cousin would love to have people donate to Dr. Amy Tiersten (her amazing primary physician!)directly through the faculty and friends organization. Here is what it says on the site.
The Faculty & Friends Campaign gives patients, family and friends the opportunity to say “thank you” to our exceptional doctors and nurses for all they do as well as provide philanthropic support critical to NYU Langone Medical Center. Your gifts support our vision to be a world-class patient-centered integrated academic medical center and will have a profound impact on every person who enters our Medical Center – either to receive care or to care for others.
The strong bonds that exist between our doctors and nurses and their patients are a testament to the extraordinary work that takes place every day at NYU Langone Medical Center. By participating in the Faculty & Friends Campaign, you can acknowledge someone who has made a difference in your life, or the life of a loved one. Every dollar that you give goes directly to supporting NYU Langone Medical Center’s ongoing commitment to setting the standard for medical care today.
So, If you can, please go to the website and donate whatever you can---and please remember to put Dr. Amy Tiersten's name in the appropriate place.

FEEDING AMERICA--Give Away-ends 2/10/11
Sunday, January 9, 2011
WINNER IS #56 DEBBIE M
Feeding America‘s (previously known as America’s Second Harvest) website will give you information on everything to do with hunger in this country and how to help combat it. Or to get help if you need it!! Some of the statistics are frightening--
Here are the answers to 3 of the 10 questions on their Hunger Quiz:
1. Not having access to enough food to sustain a healthy life is a reality for one in six Americans, including children and seniors.
2. Hunger is not an issue just for the people who struggle with poverty and homelessness. Only 12% of the clients are homeless and 36% of individuals served by the Feeding America network have at least one working adult in their households.
3. According to the USDA, more than 14 million children are living in food-insecure households. School lunch programs do help, but they don’t solve the whole problem.
I encourage you to go to Feeding America’s website and take this quiz!! It is an eye opener!!
This is the national organization which distributes to the network food bank partners around the country. There is a food bank locator for you to look up which of the network members serves your community. If you can volunteer time—they tell you what you can do.
Now the Give Away:
One lucky winner will get 2 Mixes and 1 Spice of their choice from DoYouBake?
Mandatory Entry: Go to FeedingAmerica.org and tell me one thing you didn’t know. If you take the quiz what answer surprised you the most-

Dreamcatchers For Abused Children Fundraiser!
Saturday, January 8, 2011
We are doing a fundraiser to help Dreamcatchers for Abused Children raise funds to pass out some Scentsy Buddies to abused kids.
Children that have suffered abuse often feel alone & scared. Especially those who have been removed from their homes and placed in shelters and foster homes. Most of these children are left without anything that they can call their own and take with them where ever they go so that they can feel secure. Something they can hold and love that is all theirs.
>CLICK HERE To read full details and please read carefully to see how you can help.

FIRST BOOK-Give Away-ends 1/20/11
Thursday, January 6, 2011
Congratulations!!
The True Random Number Generator picked #26 Jeni--I will send Jeni an email letting her know THAT SHE WON--she has 48 hours to respond or someone else will be picked.
This giveaway is officially closed but the content can always be viewed on charities!!
I am a reader. I believe that every child should experience the wonder of opening his or her very own book. There is something about actually holding a book and turning the pages that can cause the imagination to soar. It can be the beginning of a love of lifetime learning. Most times it is a parent who first buys and then reads to their child, turning the pages, explaining the brightly colored pictures! Unfortunately not everyone in this day and age can afford that First Book. One of my favorite
charities is First Book; they donate that first book to children whose parents simply cannot afford them.
So, when the time comes that you are thinking about which charity to give to—won’t you consider First Book. I really just want you to see what this charity is all about. Whether you might consider donating at some point or have a need for their services or are just curious please click in and read all about it!!
And I have a suggestion for all us avid readers out there—this year why don’t you forgo the buying of 1 book and donate the money to First book instead. And when you are thinking about what to buy a child as a present—buy them a book (admittedly in addition to whatever else they might want!)
Now for the fun part!!! I will be giving away to one lucky poster either a subscription to Cricket Magazine or Zoo books Magazine (used in some schools) or a book of your choice from Random House. (All these sites can be found on my affiliate website www.betterthenthebest.com) From Today until 1/20/2011
Mandatory Entry: Go to First Book and tell me something you learned.
