Book Review-Void (Crocodile Dreamings Book 3) Graham Wilson

Wednesday, June 19, 2024

This is a novel that will make you wonder and a bit sad. She was in jail for killing her lover--but she must have had a reason--she won't tell them. She just keeps saying she's guilty and is planning on taking her own life after her babies are born. The one person who could have gotten to her was in a massive accident. Everyone considered him dead--but somehow he makes it.

I didn't quite understand what crocodiles had to do with it all---but it certainly did. A lot of this story can get kind of slow--but then it gets really fast. It was definitely worth the read. I probably would have been better off reading the 1st and 2nd in this series before this one.

About the Book: (from Amazon)

She sits alone in an empty cell. They say she killed her lover, fed his body to the crocodiles. She will tell no one what happened on that last fateful day. She knows an awful secret but will hide it forever. It is this man's diary. She has hidden that too. There is a buried box which no one must find. The search gets closer. She must stop them.

One person, a good friend, could help her. But now he and his helicopter have vanished. It was in a vast empty wilderness where nobody goes. Soon after helicopter wreckage is found floating in the sea There was a huge flood. He is presumed dead.

About the Author: (from Amazon)

Graham Wilson grew up in a remote aboriginal community in Australia's Northern Territory. After becoming a veterinarian, he worked on large cattle properties across this place. During this time he survived an attack by a large saltwater crocodile.

He started writing a memoir to capture his family's story particularly that of his parents. He also wanted to record stories he heard about other amazing people who lived in this remote land.

After writing his memoir he has gone on to write 12 novels including two series and two standalone books. One series, set in the NT has crocodiles and their importance to the aboriginal people as a central part of the story. It is a story of a visitor and a local man and how their affair turns to tragedy. It is built around the real and authentic places of the NT. The other series is set in a house in the inner Sydney suburb of Balmain and a small girl who lived here a hundred years ago.

Graham now lives in the heart of Sydney, in the historic Rocks district, a short walk from Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. When he gets the chance, he returns to Australia's Outback to continue to hear and tell its stories.

Book Review-The Royal Companion-An epic love story (The Companion series Book 1)-Tanya Bird

Tuesday, June 18, 2024

This was an historical romance at a time and in a place that I am not sure actually existed. It was totally engaging and readable. There are some sections which might be a little hard for some people to stomach--especially the way women were used. It put me in mind of the Handmaidens Tale!

It is definitely worth the read and I will continue reading this series as it ends leaving a few big questions!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Bound by tradition. Now they must follow the rules.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE WOOLLAHRA DIGITAL LITERARY AWARDS 2017

Companions are the kingdom’s most beautiful and educated women—possessions of Syrasan’s royal men.

Aldara is sixteen when she is sold to the obnoxious crown prince as a gift for his brother. Forced to leave the only life she has ever known, Aldara is sent to Archdale Castle, where she is mentored to become Prince Tyron’s perfect Companion. But no amount of lessons can prepare her for the troubled man marked by war. He sees straight through the polished exterior presented to him. He sees her.

All Prince Tyron wants is privacy to grieve. When his brother gifts him a Companion upon his return, he is forced to embrace a tradition he has so far managed to avoid. Except Aldara is not like the others. She walks with her face to the sun and arms swinging. Her laughter makes him forget the lie. But if they ignore the rules that safeguard them, there will be consequences.

This is book one in The Companion series. If you enjoy dark medieval romance, then this epic tale of love against all odds is for you.

Trigger warning: This book contains sexual violence, death, and dark themes intended for mature audiences.

Book Review- I, Richard Plantagenet- Book One- Tante le Desiree Reedman, J.P.

Tuesday, May 28, 2024

This is a rather long novel but seemed to catch and keep my attention. It tells the life of RICHARD PLANTAGENET from approx age 18 thru his adult years. He always seems to listen to his elder brother--the King--The middle brother was a thorn in his side from when he was a very young boy. He does finally get the woman of his dreams--but life is not easy.

The ending left me kind of confused--maybe one of the other books in this series will answer the questions I was left with.

About the Book: (from Amazon)

I, RICHARD PLANTAGENET, PART ONE : TANT LE DESIREE (I have desired it so much.) 1471 : THE BATTLE OF BARNET. He is eighteen. It is his first battle. He is wounded…he is Richard of Gloucester, the King’s youngest brother. With the Kingmaker slain, Richard and his brother Edward IV go on to ultimate victory at Tewkesbury. The Old King Henry dies in ‘mysterious circumstances’ in the Tower and York’s claim is secure…Richard wants to marry Anne Neville, the Kingmaker’s daughter, but his brother George stands in his way and hides her in a London tavern… Not all the feuds are on the battlefield for the House of York! Finally finding his bride, Richard gets both the girl…and her lands! As Lord of the North, with Middleham castle as his main seat, he sets out to be York’s ‘especial good lord’ He is Chief Mourner at the reburial of his father, Richard Duke or York, and fares with the King to France for what he hopes will be another Agincourt, a glorious victory for England. Instead, he finds a changed Edward…and the dishonour of French bribes. The next few years bring grief when the perennially troubled George of Clarence goes mad and is executed by King Edward for treason. The Three Sons of York are no longer three, and Edward’s glorious Sun in Splendour seems to be setting. With Edward’s health on the wane, it is Richard’s duty to take on the invading Scots alone and put the fickle Duke of Albany on the Scottish throne. A new Wars of the Roses epic, both bloody and bawdy; the story of Richard III is retold for the first time in first person, from Richard’s point of view. Tragedy and comedy collide. A different Richard than any you have read before— King’s brother, warrior, scoliosis sufferer, teenage father, loyal husband, and great magnate—with a sense of humour! Note: some strong language. From the author of Sacred King and White Roses, Golden Sunnes

Book Review-Before the Storm: War of the Submarine: Book 0-R.G.Roberts

Friday, May 24, 2024

These modern day pirates are really bad guys!! They steal other peoples and countries boats and submarines-even if they have to kill to get what they want!

Alex, Navy and his old college room mate Paul, a Marine combine forces to find and stop these pirates. They use a very inventive method which I am sure you will agree with.

This novel is the prequel to War of the Submarines---I think I just might read more of this series!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Modern-Day Piracy Square off Against the U.S. Navy Under the High Seas

It's 2037. A band of modern-day pirates station-hops across the Indian Ocean in an old Russian submarine bought off the black market. Each attack bolder and more costly than the last, these pirates leave behind a trail of broken bodies, businesses, and stolen submarines at every undersea station they visit—and it’s up to Lieutenant Commander Alex Coleman and attack submarine USS Kansas to stop them.

Teaming up with his old college roommate and not-so-gentle giant, marine lieutenant colonel Paul Swanson, Alex sets out on his very own pirate hunt. But these outlaws aren’t in rundown little skiffs that are easy to track and find. They’ve got a genuine warship and the will to turn weapons against innocent civilians and undersea stations, and more importantly, they’re good at stealth.

With time running out, Alex convinces his friendly neighborhood U.N. representative to rent a ridiculously expensive civilian submarine with every bell and whistle a rich guy can dream of—and many Alex can't! Cut off from Kansas’ support, he and the marines play bait for the pirates.

Alex isn’t used to in-your-face battles. He’s trained to push buttons and fire torpedoes, not for the messy and bloody hand-to-hand stuff. His plan is for Kansas to nab the pirates before anyone can wave a gun near his nerdy face. But plans never survive contact with the enemy, and when the hunters become the hunted, can Alex learn a new type of warfare before it’s too late?

Before the Storm is a prequel to the near-future World War III submarine series War of the Submarine.

Book Review-Dead Men Don't Retire-Lolli Powell

Wednesday, May 22, 2024

Imagine having the ability to see and hear and speak to ghosts!! And then imagine they moved into your home where you lived with your two aunts--the sheriff was the worst. He was nosy to say the least. Then another woman was murdered--and she ended up in the house as well--Meanwhile there were two live men who were vying for her attention. To make matters worse she had sworn off men------

Trying to find the person who murdered the women wasn't easy--but Red was a relative--and she would not allow him to take the blame! Although this is a murder mystery--there were many times when I found myself laughing out loud at all the antics!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Shelby Wolfe’s life has gotten complicated—two eccentric aunts, too many attractive men, and too many roommates—both living and dead.

It’s winter in Goose Lick, and Shelby Wolfe is settling into her new home. Chief Jebediah Carpenter doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to move on, but when Lillian Harris, a local lawsuit-crazy woman, is stabbed to death with one of the café’s knives, Shelby is kind of glad Jeb is still around. Just hours before, the woman, Lil Harris, had stormed into the café and accused Shelby’s cousin, Red, of trying to poison her. During the ensuing argument, Red had a knife in his hand, the same knife that ended up being the murder weapon.

Since the murdered woman had sued nearly everyone in town and claimed to know things about people they would want kept secret, almost everyone in Goose Lick had a motive for wanting to see Lillian dead. But thanks to the argument and the knife, the police zero in on Red. Shelby knows her cousin wouldn’t have killed anyone, but she’s convinced someone is trying to set him up. She vows to prove his innocence by finding the real killer, and she has Chief Jeb Carpenter to help her.

After all, dead men don’t retire.

Book Review- Troy- A Crown of Stones Origin Story (The Crown of Stones) Schneider, C. L.

Monday, May 20, 2024

I have read and reviewed 2 of the books in this series--I truly enjoyed them-hopefully I will get to read the third. This prelude reminded me of just how much!

This prelude to the series really tells the story of how and why Troy, a slave, became the man he was. He had to learn to control the magic in his blood in order to somewhat fit in with the rest of the people he had to deal and fight with--not that it ever really helped. Even those who learned to trust him--backed away at the end. Then the Queen, head of the army,-----well you will have to read this to learn what happened.

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Can a man born a slave change his destiny with one secret mission?

Born of the Shinree, an enslaved fallen race, Ian Troy is magically bound to protect the kingdom of Rella. Since childhood, he trained to be their champion in a seemingly never-ending war. Called to the battlefield a brash young man of seventeen, Troy is anxious to show off his prowess with both magic and blade. He believes his role is vital to the realms of Mirra’kelan finally knowing peace.

Only, war is nothing like he thought.

After a year of being mistrusted and shunned simply for the blood in his veins—his magic restrained by an authoritarian queen—Troy has grudgingly learned his place. He follows orders and suffers their abuse in silence because the cost of insolence is a chain around his neck.

When Queen Aylagar handpicks him for a mission deep inside enemy territory, he thinks his time has come. Fate willing, he will prove to them all: Ian Troy is more than the “witch” they believe.

*Troy is a prequel adventure set fifteen years before The Crown of Stones Trilogy.

About the Author: (from Amazon)

Though I now live in Kelso in the Scottish Borders, I was born and brought up on Tyneside; the setting for my last three novels. Once a Geordie, always a Geordie, as the saying goes.

Though I only began writing in 2001, many of my short stories and articles have been published in national magazines here in the UK. But then I felt the urge to move on to writing something with a little more grit.

Therefore, my first novel, The Trojan Project, is an all-action thriller. During the writing process, I felt I was on the ride of my life, as I added so many spine-chilling incidents. I was determined to grab the readers' attention from the very beginning and give them the roller-coaster read of their lives.

Since then, I have turned to writing women's fiction. with Divorcees.Biz, a novel of fun and romance, shortly followed by, Only Twelve Days, a heart-warming romance.

However, after deciding to turn my hand to writing a series of cozy murder mysteries, I chose my hometown as the setting. Murder on Tyneside - Agnes Lockwood Mysteries Book 1, was released in December 2016, with Agnes as the new sleuth on Tyneside. Death on Tyneside (Book 2) came next and more recently Vengeance on Tyneside (Book 3)

Hopefully, there will be a Book 4 in the series. How could I possibly let Agnes Lockwood down, when she has given me so much fun - she is part of me now.

Book Review-Mistress of the Maze: The Legend of Rosamund Clifford-J.P Reedman

Tuesday, May 7, 2024

Whether Henry II really loved Rosamund Clifford or was she just one of the many mistress' he had I kind of wondered about at the end of this engaging novel. No doubt he didn't want to lose her-he gave her jewels and other really amazing gifts.-and although she lived in almost total seclusion-she was allowed many priviledges and was able to convince him to allow her to accompany him on occasion to royal functions. She loved him--I have no doubt about that. Unfortunately he was married to a woman who was jealous and who refused to allow him to divorce her. It was this jealousy which was the ultimate reason a woman who Rosamund had fired to attempt to end her life. Did she succeed? Read this book to find out.

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Rosamund Clifford, one of the most famous royal mistresses of all time—concubine to Henry II, the first Plantagenet King. A young maiden ruled by a grasping father who will stop at nothing to promote his own cause with the King...even using his daughter's beautiful face and enticing body to gain high favour. A fearful girl taken by a mysterious messenger from Godstow nunnery to a Tower surrounded by a grotesque topiary labyrinth, where she must wait for the arrival of the master of the maze—not the Minotaur of ancient Greek myth but the bull-like Plantagenet King Henry. Drawn like a moth to a flame, Rosamund soon grows to love the charismatic King…but when her love is reciprocated, she makes a terrible enemy, Henry’s estranged wife, the powerful Eleanor of Aquitaine. When Henry locks Queen Eleanor in Sarum castle and speaks of annulment, Rosamund thinks she has no more to fear from her rival. But a spurned Queen is a dangerous foe… Novel 57,000 words, from the author of My Fair Lady-Eleanor of Provence and I, Richard Plantagenet

What has happened to their boss and their families. How many people are still alive on the planet? Is there any shelter left that will keep them safe.

You really have to read this one--even if, like me, you are not really used to reading this genre!!
