Book Review-Zenka-Alison Brodie

Wednesday, November 8, 2017

This story takes place in England with ALL the Cockney words (there are translations before you start reading) but even without them--I, at least was able to get the gist of it! It is essentially the story of a mob boss who wants to go totally legit because he thinks he found the son he never knew knew he had. Now this guy wasn't all that bad--he did save a bunch of women from the Romanians who had kidnapped them. Zenka, the Hungarian whirl wind with a temper to match and a heart of pure gold decided to stay with Jack Murray--whether he likes it or not!!

What Jack does before he meets his son will have you laughing--

Meanwhile Zenka keeps writing short letters to her friend (or relative) because there is someone or thing she wants to wreak revenge on--almost as an after thought in each note she asks--How is the Family?

Then there is the accountant who is planning to move far far away--he sends his cat Bentley ahead of his leaving--I want to know what happened to the cat!

There is a happy ending but part of the ending gave me pause------what has Zenka done now?

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Devious, ruthless, and loyal.

Zenka is a capricious Hungarian with a dark past.

When cranky London mob boss, Jack Murray, saves her life she vows to become his guardian angel – whether he likes it or not. Happily, she now has easy access to pistols, knives and shotguns.

Jack discovers he has a son, Nicholas, a male nurse with a heart of gold. Problem is, Nicholas is a wimp.

Zenka takes charge. Using her feminine wiles and gangland contacts, she will make Nicholas into the sort of son any self-respecting crime boss would be proud of. And she succeeds!

Nicholas transforms from pussycat to mad dog, falls in love with Zenka, and finds out where the bodies are buried – because he buries them. He’s learning fast that sometimes you have to kill, or be killed.

As his life becomes more terrifying, questions have to be asked:

How do you tell a mob boss you don’t want to be his son?

And is Zenka really who she says she is?

I like stories where the villain isn't really that bad and turns good. Usually something earth shattering turned them bad (in the books and movies anyway.) I'm a big softy for the underdog as a rule. I think I will like this book, on my list it goes!

I love a good book like this the read when I am stuck inside in a winter snow storm, just cuddle under a blanket and read all day.

Even though I tend to only read nonfiction and this isn't my kind of storyline I usually am into, it still sounds like it is an interesting plot.

I didn't think this book would be something I would enjoy, but read through your post anyway. You sold me. It sounds like a great story. I love that the lady looks out for the crime boss after being saved by him. Thanks for sharing the info.

I don't know if I'd choose to read this book only because I don't want to have to think about what's being said in a translation. I'm probably not explaining that very well, but I don't want to have to "work" to read a book, too much thinking about.... what does that mean, etc, reminds me of school and not just for pleasure. I'm sure there are readers out there that will like the book though.

Sounds like an interesting book but it's not really up my alley. I prefer paranormal/scifi/etc

This book sounds like an intriguing read that makes you stay up reading all night or until you find out how it all ends. I love tough females and a good anti-hero. Thanks for including the excerpt, reviews and giveaway!

This sounds like a book I migh read, especially after your review. I like suspense, but oddly, for me it depends where the plot is set. I have a tougher time imagining the actions in a different country vs going from say Minneapolis to Atlanta. I am more of an American based mystery reader. I do like how the plot plays out though, and how the main character is quirky.
