Do you see that little girl up there--the look of wonder in her eyes as she reads the book. That was probably what my face looked liked when I was her age. And when she either finishes the book or has to go to bed her imagination will take over and she will be who ever she wants to be in what ever place her mind takes her to. She may become a veterinarian helping out a sick animal--or maybe she will be a princess living in a fairy tale land with everything her little heart desires right at her finger tips. I used to imagine that I was a super sleuth like Nancy Drew and would solve lots of different types of crimes. Sometimes I would imagine I lived in a forest and lived and made friends with all the animals. A child's imagination really has no bounds--and reading helps fuel that imagination.

I was lucky that my parents read to me from a very young age and instilled the love of reading which is with me to this day (so is my imagination as a matter of fact). I was also lucky that they could afford to buy me books and that my Mom took me to the library for many others as I got older. My favorite place to go as a child was the New York Public Library! Libraries are magical places filled with all kinds of activities these days--and don't cost a cent--unless you take out a book and forget to return it on time.

Literacy is so very important in this world -and it all begins with being able to read.

I will be attempting to create a series about Illiteracy in both children and adults and the places that try to help. You can start to help by clicking this link that will take you to the Literacy Site . The button also appears under all the ads on my left side bar. I am NOT an affiliate. You can click in for free every day and help get books into children's hands who might not otherwise have any. To see how much they do click here for some amazing statistics.

What a wonderful program that would give free books to children (or adults.) It is such a shameful fact that in 2017 illiteracy is still a problem in the USA. I love that libraries are there for children to have access to books and programs. There are awesome people that help, although, the need is so large. Feed your child or buy him a book? It is terribly sad that families have to make those choices. Thank goodness for the libraries and those helping to reduce the number of illiterate people here and across the world.

It is too bad that there is too much illiteracy in the USA. I would give blame to both the public school system and the parent(s). I am so happy that I home schooled all six of my children. I gave them all a love of reading. Now that my oldest daughter is now a mother, she has already dedicated herself as being the teacher of her children. There are many books in her home already, and reads to her children almost everyday (little hard with a newborn in the house right now).

It's up to parents and the school system to give our kids the love of reading.

There really isn't an excuse but laziness on the parents part. I read to my children from the time they were in my womb. One of my daughters didn't read until she was 8 but is a better reader than almost anyone else in the family. There are libraries everywhere and Dolly Parton has a great program for literacy as well.

It is amazing to hear about the illiteracy in our country. We are not exposed to it but I will be clicking to get those books distributed.

I do find it sad when I hear of people that can't read. Not only is reading a necessary life skill, it;s also a great way to escape, relax, learn and more.

What a great program! It's crazy to me that people still can't read. So sad so I'm glad things like this exist!

This is an great campaign. Literacy rate should not be less than 100%. I think parents should do their part to reinforce what kids learn in school to build their confidence and love for reading. Being able to read is the first step to success.

As a teacher, I 100% love this post. I just remember the days when I would sneakily read under the bedcover after my parents went to bed. And I would just devour books day after day after day. I think so much of that LOVE for reading comes before a child even enters the school!

Such a noble program and illiteracy is surely such a threat nowadays. The parents need to be more active and encourage reading.

I love to read and love that our my kids love for me to read them. It so so devastating that there is illiteracy in a country like the United States.

We are avid readers here at our house, so I can't imagine a child growing up without books in their lives. Books really do spur imaginations and helps ideas to grow and blossom. I'm happy to support this fantastic cause! I've clicked your link. Thank you for sharing it!

When I was little reading was a HUGE part of my life. It was my escape. I could read all day, and I was never bored. That is something I wish for my children, that they too will love books the same way as I did.

I was that little girl when I was younger. Books have always been a transforming experience. Good luck with your program!
