Book Review-The Time Bubble-Jason Ayers

Friday, September 30, 2016

This book is interesting to say the least. I do love books involving time travel-but this is unlike any I've read. It is really the story of how it all began for 5 people and by the end--uh can't tell you-it would spoil it. This is the first book in a series of three. When you get to the end you may think that the story is finished-------I really do want to know what happens next---and maybe be told how that time bubble got there in the first place!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Charlie and Josh’s interests were the same as most other teenagers: drinking, parties and girls. That was until the day they discovered the Time Bubble.

It starts at a bit of fun, jumping a few seconds into the future. Soon things take a more serious turn as the leaps in time increase in duration. When a teenage girl goes missing, and the police become involved, suspicion falls on Charlie. How can he explain where she is? Will anyone believe him?

As the long term dangers of the Bubble become clear, one man comes up with a solution – one that could hold the key to his own salvation.

Set in a small market town in Southern England in the early 21st century, this light-hearted time travel novel has plenty to delight readers of all ages.

This novel is the first part of a trilogy which continues with Global Cooling and concludes with Man Out Of Time.

About the Author: (from Amazon)

Jason Ayres began his writing career at Primary School in 1979 with a 94 chapter epic space adventure. It featured the exploits of Captain Jason who bore more than a passing resemblance to a famous starship captain of the era. Sadly, the plot was just getting going when his teacher firmly suggested that he try writing about something else.

Never one to let the creative sap rest for long, by the mid 1980's he was furiously scribbling down plays in "spare" exercise books liberated from the stationery cupboard. These plays starred his classmates and girls he fancied in a number of outrageous and libellous scenarios. The plays have now been placed securely under lock and key with strict instructions never to release them to the general public.

Unfortunately his budding aspirations as a writer were somewhat stifled in his twenties by an ill-advised fifteen year career in the Market Research industry. At this time, writing opportunities were somewhat limited by having to go to work every day. However he still found time to write numerous letters to various manufacturers advising them on their product ranges. He also produced many spoof newsletters for the countless activities that a social life based around the pub entailed.

Eventually he left the world of sales figures behind to become a stay-at-home dad, giving him a whole new source of material to write about. His first two humorous parenting diaries, "Fortysomething Father" and "Austerity Dad", were published in 2013. This was followed in 2014 by a third diary recording his experiences in the world of sausages. He also continued writing about his parenting experiences via a weekly column in the Oxford Mail.

In the summer of 2014, Jason released his first novel, "The Time Bubble", which was a huge hit both in the UK and the US, achieving the coveted #1 spot in the YA Time Travel category. The sequel, "Global Cooling" followed in November. The trilogy was completed in 2015 by "Man Out Of Time."

He has also released two spin-off novels related to the series. First came "My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday", the story of a man living his life backwards, one day at a time. His latest release is "Midlife Crisis" following a middle-aged man down on his luck who gets the chance to revisit his own past.

My Review

Will a socially adept woman, both on and off line be able to convince a mountain man who prefers solitude that they should take a chance on each other--even though they are complete opposites? Well, it takes a bit of doing but Shannon is bound and determined. She is like a butterfly--flitting from one thing to the next--and never stops talking! He is the proverbial mountain man--quiet and looks kind of grizzly.

They both have issues and are scared to death to start up with each other since Shannon is only going to be in the area for a short while--Chemistry can not be denied--and it is explosive between the two of them.

Will they figure out if they can live apart--or will one of them capitulate? Read on--this is steamy--but such a great story I kind of didn't notice (well maybe I did)--and I absolutely loved the ending.

Melissa Foster has done it again!!

Book Review-Split Second-Douglas E. Richards

Monday, September 26, 2016

Admittedly this book had me shaking my head as I attempted to understand the science--I managed not to take physics at any time in my life!! But I didn't feel too bad as one of the characters was as confuzzled as I was! Thankfully he could think on his feet while no one else could and was able to outwit both the good and the bad guys!!!

Try to imagine your fiance being murdered in front of you--what Jenna does to find out the reason why will keep you reading. Who are the bad guys and who are the good guys? You won't find out until nearly the very end. There are a LOT of twists and turns in this one.

The ending has me wondering and worrying a little and hoping like I seem to do at the end of each of this author's books--that this is not really happening. At the very end--after you have read this roller coaster of a novel-the author does give some interesting information about where he got his information. I may be looking into some of that myself!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

The breathtaking new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of WIRED.

What if you found a way to send something back in time? But not millions of years back, to the age of the dinosaur. Not even a minute back. What if you could only send something back a fraction of a second? Would this be of any use? You wouldn't have nearly enough time to right a wrong, change an event, or win a lottery.

Nathan Wexler is a brilliant physicist who thinks he's found a way to send matter a split second back into the past. But before he can even confirm his findings, he and his wife-to-be, Jenna Morrison, find themselves in a battle for their very lives. Because while time travel to an instant earlier seems useless, Jenna comes to learn that no capability in history has ever been more profound or far-reaching.

Now, as Jenna fights to defeat the powerful forces arrayed against her, nothing less than the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. . .

Containing a stunningly unique slant on time travel, SPLIT SECOND is a roller-coaster ride of a thriller, one that will have readers pondering the nature of time, and of reality, long after they've read the last page.

Book Review-Ludwika: A Polish Woman's Struggle To Survive In Nazi Germany-Christoph Fischer

Friday, September 23, 2016

It is difficult to put into words how this novel affected me. Luckily for Ludwika she was not Jewish which had to be proved several times or her life would probably have been worse. Nazi Germany was not a very pleasant place to be if you were not totally German. Work camps were set up for non Germans and they were horrendous. She was a trusting soul-actually she had no choice. It seemed at every turn just when she thought all would be well--something else happened. How she kept her spirits up--I will never know.

Luckily for her there was always some kind soul who helped her out--until it did not suit their purposes.

What keeps going through my head is "if you don't remember history--you will repeat it". It kind of reminded me of what is going on in this country right now--I hope we all wake up!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

It’s World War II and Ludwika Gierz, a young Polish woman, is forced to leave her family and go to Nazi Germany to work for an SS officer. There, she must walk a tightrope, learning to live as a second-class citizen in a world where one wrong word could spell disaster and every day could be her last. Based on real events, this is a story of hope amid despair, of love amid loss . . . ultimately, it’s one woman’s story of survival.
Editorial Review:

"This is the best kind of fiction—it’s based on the real life. Ludwika’s story highlights the magnitude of human suffering caused by WWII, transcending multiple generations and many nations.

WWII left no one unscarred, and Ludwika's life illustrates this tragic fact. But she also reminds us how bright the human spirit can shine when darkness falls in that unrelenting way it does during wartime.

This book was a roller coaster ride of action and emotion, skilfully told by Mr. Fischer, who brought something fresh and new to a topic about which thousands of stories have already been told."

Book Review-Old River-Clyde Linsley

Wednesday, September 21, 2016

This story is actually two stories in one. The main story is about the murder of a young woman. Dispersed among the chapters is the story of the Mississippi River and steamboats. It explains why the river was forced to flow along the path it did-and the people who made it happen-quite interesting. The author, at the end of the book tells what was real and what was his imaginings.

Amd there is a madman who is going to attempt to change the course of the river again--but who is he? And who is the murdered girl? His ultimate reason will astound you--or maybe not. Business and the bottom line has always been and unfortunately will probably always be the bain of Mother Earth!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Sheriff John Sprenkel has only lived in Concordia Parish, Louisiana for six years and has never had to investigate a murder. . . until now. The badly beaten body of a young woman dumped beside the banks of the Mississippi River offers few clues, but when he searches for answers, all he finds are more questions. Was the young woman Harriet Van Dorn, graduate student in Natchez, Mississippi, or Madeleine D'Anjou, streetwalker in New Orleans? Sprenkel isn't the only person who wants to find the truth. Jill Winston, Harriet's roommate, finds the investigation more compelling than her graduate work, and is intrigued by hard-working Sheriff Sprenkel. But their investigations lead to a dangerous plot dreamed up by a madman-one that could lead to disaster for everyone living along the Mississippi River!

About the Author: (from the publicist)

Clyde Linsley was born 1942 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He graduated from Little Rock Central High School in 1960 (at the height of the desegregation controversy). Linsley attended Little Rock University (one year), then transferred to the University of Missouri. There, he received a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the Missouri School of Journalism in 1964. That was followed by two years of graduate study in theology and social ethics at Colgate Rochester Divinity School where he didn’t get a degree but gained interesting knowledge and significant expenses and considered it worth every penny.

When asked what inspires his writing, Clyde quotes a favorite writer:

“William Faulkner wrote that the past isn’t irrelevant, and that it is “not even past.” As a Southerner who has lived most of his adult life in the east, I keep finding the past encroaching on the present, wherever I go. If there is a single theme to my books, it’s probably that what happens tomorrow is directly related to what happened yesterday. Europeans are probably more aware of this, because they have so much more history, but it’s just as true on this side of the pond.”

Most of his stories have echoes from the past.
After school, he worked on state and national political campaigns, two presidential inaugurations, and wrote radio news for a small New Hampshire broadcaster. He was also a reporter for a (now defunct) daily newspaper, a freelance writer and a mystery novelist. Clyde is married with three offspring (now adults) and lives with his wife in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC.

Book Review-Altered Genes:Genesis-Mark K. Kelly

Tuesday, September 20, 2016

I saw this book on one of the free book lists and on a whim decided to get it. I do enjoy medical/scientific type novels. I started reading it and ended up finishing it! Of course now I will have to get my hands on the 2nd and 3rd novels in this series. It really leaves you wondering what happens next!!

This book revolves around gene splicing ---to the point that the bug-which is highly contagious--can't be cured by any of the antibiotics that are around. There are several people who are trying to find a cure--but there are a couple that are trying to hide what has been done. The entire country is shut down (as is most of the rest of the world). They will have to somehow get to Canada and are aided by an Indian tribe. They cross to Canada----and that is where the book ends!!

That this could actually happen scares me no end!! Bio-terrorism---------------------------

I really do suggest you read this novel if you enjoy medical/scientific mysteries which might actually come to pass!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

To save the world, first they have to save themselves…

When an unconscious British businessman arrives at New York City’s Bellevue Hospital, Dr. Mei Ling unwittingly finds herself in the midst of an infectious outbreak.

Meanwhile, Professor Tony Simmons, her ex-lover, and a world-renowned geneticist at Georgetown University receives an enigmatic telephone call that hints at a genetic threat, unlike anything the world has ever seen.

As the pandemic spreads, governments close their borders and quarantine cities. Simmons is taken to a secret military laboratory to search for a cure. But it’s the truth he finds instead, and now he, Ling, and an odd group of survivors are on the run as civilization collapses around them.

Genesis is the first book in the Altered Genes trilogy with book two (Revelations) and book three (Resurrection) to follow in 2016.

About the Author: (from Amazon)

Most bio's are written in the third person but I find that 'odd' - especially when I'm describing myself.

I've been a reader my entire life and a writer the last few years. The very first book I remember reading was "The Mad Scientist Club". That series started a life-long love of books that mix science and adventure. Something, I try and incorporate into everything I write.

My favorite genres to read are science fiction, dystopian, and thrillers but a well-written book in any genre can suck me in and take me on a journey with it.

I write full-time these days but I'm slow...slow like a glacier melting. My goal is to release three full-size novels per year. As of mid-2016, the first book in the Altered Genes series has been published and the second one is nearly finished (September due date). I'm also working on a Young Adult post apocalyptic series based loosely on the Altered Genes world.

I live in Canada with my wife, son and a dog. When I'm not writing, I'm pulling weeds in our vegetable garden or shovelling snow.

I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for reading.

Book Review-Until the Sun Rises-Channing Whitaker

Monday, September 19, 2016

Talk about a psychological thriller which will keep the goosebumps raised on your body--and shivers going up and down your spine! A live TV event is going to be held at a mansion which is supposedly haunted by 5 contestants--they have to stay in Drake mansion until the sun rises the next day in order to share in a very large prize, a million dollars. But is it really haunted as the locals believe or is something else causing the apparitions and sounds emanating from the mansion?

Some pretty strange occurrences happen to several of the contestants as they roam the various rooms on each floor. One of the contestants finds a journal, written by the head of the family, which he proceeds to read to us--but not all at once--which gives the back story of the missing family and the magician.

By the end of this novel--which goes faster and faster as you turn each page--you will not be able to put it down--the ending--well--gulp!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Eighty years ago, a wealthy Midwest family returned home from a magic show, after which neither they, nor the magician, Malvern Kamrar, were ever heard from again. When several bystanders died in their mansion, the house was sealed. After nearly a century of rumors and haunted stories, for a live TV event the mansion will be opened, allowing five contestants to spend one night and win their share of a million dollars. The contestants: a psychic, a high-tech ghost hunter, a Hollywood scream queen, a local woman, and a skeptic, fuel excitement as each tries to solve the mystery. Upon entering, the journal of the family patriarch, Vinton Drake, is discovered, illuminating the mystery, rooted all the way back to Vinton’s service as a medic in WWI, when he first met the magician. Departing from the familiar haunted house tale, this story explores the very nature of belief in the supernatural, with consequences more frightening than any ghost story. Intensity sours when the contestants discover their lives, and thousands more, are in genuine peril. Is the mansion haunted? What fate befell Malvern and the Drake family? And will the contestants uncover the truth in time to save themselves?

About the Author: (from Amazon)

Channing Whitaker is a novelist, screenwriter, and filmmaker originally hailing from Centerville, Iowa. An alum of Indian Hills Community College, Channing went on to study cinema, screenwriting, literature, and mathematics at the University of Iowa.

Post graduation, Channing began his career in the production of television news, independent films, and commercial videos, as well as to write for websites, corporate media, and advertising. His 10-year career in writing has taken Channing from Iowa, to Alaska, Oklahoma, and currently to Texas.

Channing has written five feature-length screenplays, co-written another feature screenplay, and penned a novel. In that time, Channing has also written and directed over 50 short films.
The April 2015 publication of Channing's debut novel, “Until the Sun Rises – One Night in Drake Mansion,” comes in tandem with the first production of one of Channing’s feature screenplays, “KILD TV” - a horror/mystery. “KILD TV” released in March 2016.

Channing is a fan of many media forms and genres. He considers himself a storyteller foremost, and works in multiple media and genres himself. He regards Trevanian (known best for his divergent spy novels) as his favorite author and an inspiration for his writing career. He also credits his father, a retired psychology professor, with heavily influencing his approach to the deep, conflicted, and multifaceted characters that drive his stories. Other artistic influences for Channing include auteur directors Jim Jarmusch and Robert Altman.

Channing is among a small subset of writers who are also dyslexic. He considers learning to overcome the challenges of this diagnosis, amid a career in writing, to have aided him in persevering amid the rejection-filled, uncertain, and competitive fields of writing and screenwriting.

$25 Amazon / PP-1-WW-Hutchins Creek Cache-Deborah Garner-Ends 10/8

Paige MacKenzie is definitely a magnet for finding troubles--and has a penchant for not letting go until the mysteries that fall into her lap are solved. Of course she is a journalist--so that might have something to do with it. Her long distance boyfriend, Jake Norris, again has to save her. At least this time he managed to take a vacation and meet up with Paige in the little town of Hutchins Creek where her current writing assignment is. Will Jake finally convince Paige to take the plunge and move to his ranch--he has been trying for a couple of books in this series (I loved them all).

But who caused the antique train in the museum to start--then derail? The answer to this surprised me--I really didn't think of it--but then again------------And who stole the double eagles from the mint all those years ago? Will this age old mystery get solved?

This book is part of a series which I would recommend to anyone--each can be read as stand alone--but I think you would enjoy them all!

Guest Post-Maria Grazia Swan-Author of Gemini Moon

Wednesday, September 14, 2016

My review of Gemini Moon was seen yesterday--today we all get a glimpse of how this story originated. Thank you Maria Grazia Swan for so graciously allowing us to know the background-it is interesting!

And now for the Guest Post by Maria Grazia Swan, author of Gemini Moon

This is how Lella’s story started.

It was a cold, foggy spring morning up in the Cuyamaca Mountains, East of San Diego, and I sat and listened intensely to Jan Burke’s workshop on how to make our fiction feel more real. All this happened at one of the Bare Bones Conference, organized by the San Diego chapter of Sisters in Crime, and, yes, it was a long time ago, and the location was a vacant summer camp for girls just outside Julian. We slept on bunk beds and ate macaroni and cheese and entertained ourselves with games we played sitting around tables by a large roaring fireplace. Now you understand the "Bare Bones" name, right? One of the highlights of those games was one night when I was partnered with J.A. Jance—the woman is a riot! But back to writing.

Jan’s suggestion was to build your fictional story around bits of truth. I’m not going to bore you with details, however, that workshop left such an impression on me that I have been applying that principle to all my works of fiction, and I will explain how I was able to blend truth and fiction for all of my Lella York’s mysteries, starting with the first chapter of Gemini Moon

This is how the story begins, and how we meet Lella.

It’s late evening and she is strolling on Ponte Vecchio (Florence, Italy) where she meets a strange astrologer… Ok, my name is not Lella York, however, the late night stroll on Ponte Vecchio and the bizarre encounter with the astrologer? All true. And actually the Hotel Lungarno is also a real place and, yes, for years it was my favorite hotel to stay, and yes, I watched the
cook trying to reel in a fish… As for the astrologer, the red velvet table cover, and the candle in "Gemini Moon?" True. Was the man a real astrologer or not? I can’t tell for sure, but he was from Spain, and I have the feeling he was an art student trying to make extra money. Of course I’m not sure. Here is what really happened: I accidentally gave him the wrong birthdate…subsequently the whole chart was messed up, we ended up arguing, but we parted on good terms. And he did keep my money. But the little incident got me thinking—what if? And there you have it, my first chapter, inspired by a real encounter.

National Bestselling author Maria Grazia Swan was born in Italy, but this rolling stone has definitely gathered no moss. She lived in Belgium, France, Germany, in beautiful Orange County, California where she raised her family, and is currently at home in Phoenix, Arizona--but stay tuned for weekly updates of Where in the World is Maria Grazia Swan?

As a young girl, her vivid imagination predestined her to be a writer. She won her first literary award at the age of fourteen while living in Belgium. As a young woman Maria returned to Italy to design for--ooh-la-la--haute couture. Once in the U.S. and after years of concentrating on family, she tackled real estate. These days her time is devoted to her deepest passions: writing and helping people find happiness.

Maria loves travel, opera, good books, hiking, and intelligent movies (if she can find one, that is). When asked about her idea of a perfect evening, she favors stimulating conversation, Northern Italian food and perfectly chilled Prosecco--but then, who doesn't?

Maria has written short stories for anthologies, articles for high profile magazines and numerous blogs tackling love and life.

Book Review -Gemini Moon-(Lella York Mysteries Book 1)-Maria Grazia Swan

Tuesday, September 13, 2016

This story has so many twists and turns I admit I got lost every once in a while. What in the world was going on here? Who is that sexy police officer and who is that lawyer that he hired to try to get Lella's son out of jail. And her poor cat----I'm surprised she didn't run away from home! But all will be revealed by the end which came rather quickly for me since I really wanted to know and read it in one sitting!! I am now looking forward to the second in this series.

About the book: (from Amazon)

When her eyes were finally opened to the truth, she couldn't recognize her own life...
Italian-born Lella York is trying to figure out who she is. Her husband has died. Her son is grown and, for the most part, gone. And now, her best friend is missing. Upon returning to Southern California after a visit to her beloved Italy, Lella is shocked to learn the mysterious circumstances of Ruby's disappearance as well as the death of Ruby's husband. And Lella's son is the prime suspect. Her cat is not so happy about it all either!

Now, someone's stalking Lella. Caught in the middle of it all, Lella stumbles across the perfect topper--namely, a sexy police detective who keeps secrets from her while he's setting her pants on fire. Nothing like a little romance to distract a girl while she's trying to locate a missing person, solve a possible homicide, get her son out of jail and stay two steps ahead of the firing line.
