Book Review-The Handfasting-David Burnett

This is one of those books that I saw the cover and I read a chapter and I just had to read the rest of it. So, I bought it! I just love that yellow rose-don't you? This is the story of 2 people who meet in Europe and keep meeting. When they get to Scotland they decide to handfast and then after 10 years Steven promises to find Katherine.

This is 1977 and believe me when I say things were different back then. Girls remained virgins until they were married-but times they were changing. There was a nemesis in Katie's life in the form of a boy she went to high school with-but never actually dated. This was a small town and it was very easy to start rumors which would spread like wildfire. It would not be pleasant.

Something happens to Katie which I can't tell you about or it will spoil the book. Let's just say I was very happy at the ending when true love prevails!

About the Book (from Amazon)

Handfasting: A Celtic ceremony of engagement or betrothal.

Katherine had joined hands with Steven in the ruins of the old abbey church. Standing before the high altar, they were handfasted in the Celtic custom, engaged to be married. Katherine was going to college, going to med school. Steven was studying art in Italy for the next year. She could not marry Steven, then. A rose bush had bloomed beside the ruined altar. Steven had reached out to caress one of the flowers.
“I’ll find you,” he had said. “In ten years, when we have finished school, when we are able to marry, I’ll find you. Until then, whenever you see a yellow rose, remember me. Remember I love you.”

Ten years after the handfasting, Steven fulfills his promise to find Katie, they fall in love again, and plan to marry.

Steven, though, is not Katherine’s only suitor. Bill Wilson –arrogant, selfish, sexist, abusive- has known Katherine since they were in high school, and he has long planned to wed her. When Steven appears, he realizes that he must finally stake his claim. The conflict that follows takes an unexpected, violent twist.

Will Steven fight for their love?

Will Katie see Bill’s abuse for what it is, or is she doomed to a tortured life as his wife?
The Handfasting is a story of love renewed, a suitor spurned, a vicious attack, and a struggle for healing.

It is a story of love that survives.

I once read a historical romance about handfasting that I just absolutely loved. I think I'm going to pick up this one as well.

This sounds like a book I would love to read. I am asking Santa for this for Christmas!

I do like that yellow rose, especially this time of year. I have been in Montana and it is so cold that that rose makes me think of sunshine.

This looks like a really good book. Thanks for this review, I don't read a lot but it's fun to have someone else's opinion before purchasing a book.

I'm going to have to reed this for sure. I am Irish and my husband is Scottish. Even though we got married at the courthouse because our wedding money was stolen, we still did the handfasting ceremony.

I'm not much for love stories but this sounds like it's got some action in there too. I wish I had more time to read.

I'm glad there's a happy ending (those are my favorite). The twist you won't tell about leaves me wondering what happened though, along the way.
