Book Review-Death Stalks Door County-Patricia Skalka

Dave used to be a police officer--then his wife and daughter were killed in a hit and run accident. He can not seem to get past this and turns to drink. His partner convinces him to take a job as a park ranger up in Door County. By the way Door County is a real place and if it is half as beautiful as the author depicts-I want to go there! The story is not real!

Door County is about to have their summer festival when strange things start happening--people are being murdered. Dave is finally convinced by the bigwig of the town to investigate. Amidst all Dave is able to come to terms with himself and it will warm your heart how this happens. So who is causing all the deaths? I can't tell you that it would give away the story. This is a well written book and I look forward to any sequels which may come along.

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Six deaths mar the holiday mood as summer vacationers enjoy Wisconsin’s beautiful Door County peninsula. Murders, or bizarre accidents? Newly hired park ranger Dave Cubiak, a former Chicago homicide detective, assumes the worst but refuses to get involved. Grief-stricken and guilt-ridden over the loss of his wife and daughter, he’s had enough of death.

Forced to confront the past, the morose Cubiak moves beyond his own heartache and starts investigating, even as a popular festival draws more people into possible danger. In a desperate search for clues, Cubiak uncovers a tangled web of greed, betrayal, bitter rivalries, and lost love beneath the peninsula’s travel-brochure veneer. Befriended by several locals but unsure whom to trust or to suspect of murder, the one-time cop tracks a clever killer.

In a setting of stunning natural beauty and picturesque waterfront villages, Death Stalks Door County introduces a new detective series, “The Dave Cubiak Door County Mysteries.”

It's a great story when the main character can better himself while helping others.

OK I admit that I love these kind of books. The ones where the hero is in a dark place but finds himself. I'll be adding the one again to my list. Miki you've filled my Kindle up with lots of books this year. :)

Thanks for a great review and for your empathy for my troubled protagonist. Like the other characters, Dave Cubiak is so real to me that I'd recognize him walking down the street.I hope readers who've never been to Door County have the chance to visit one day -- it really is a special place -- and that those with questions will reach out to me through the Contact link on my website. The saga of Dave Cubiak continues in spring 2015 with book two of the series.
