Book Review-The Price of Honor: The Life of a Spy-Danny Odato

Friday, August 1, 2014

This novel takes place in Russia during the Cold War era I believe when undercover spies were sent to Russia from the US and vise versa. James Coville is a deep undercover US spy living in Russia. The KGB doesn't really know who he is but want him in the worst way possible. Natalya Sverlova, a KGB agent is bound and determined to find this man! Oh she finds him--and not knowing who he is falls immediately in love with him-the feeling is mutual on his part. They get married (with a little pushing from the US government) but neither knows that the other is a spy.

There are portions of this book which actually had me sick--the way the prisoners were treated. It is graphically portrayed. The ending had me crying but I can't tell you why--just know that it is not the kind of ending you would expect.

About the Book: (from Amazon)

What is the price of honor?

CIA operative James Coville, in deep undercover assignment in the Soviet Admiralty at the end of the Cold War, asks himself this question regularly. In his efforts to infiltrate the highest commands of the Soviet regime, he becomes Adam Novakova, ordinary citizen, civil servant, comrade, and lover.

KGB agent Natalya Sverlova knows nothing of Adam’s secrets, but she has many of her own. Under the thumb of Controller Palchik and passionate Socialist Yuri Koval, both Adam and Natalya are drawn into a complex chase that leads them to unforeseeable compromise and leaves them questioning their loyalty to each other—and their ideals. In this gripping new novel of intrigue and romance, we’ll see that ultimately, the price of honor can be very high indeed…

Born in Italy in 1953, Danny Odato is a father of four who too young had to provide for his family instead of following his dream of writing. He is also the President of Feeding American Families, a non-profit organization that helps people in financial trouble, especially those whose homes are in foreclosure.

Sounds very much like a James Bond/Ian Fleming-type story, maybe with some elements of Tom Clancy?

This book sounds quite intriguing, though I am a bit concerned about the graphic warning. I am curious as to what kind of true historical facts are contained in the story.
