Learning to Love to Read

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

It is so important to teach your child to love reading. Starting at a very young age by reading to them and having them interact with you and the story is integral to this process! For infants there are cloth books that you can read to them with bright pictures which they can hold and touch. As they get a bit older—pop up books can be lots of fun and will keep their attention. Even if you don’t think your child is learning-they are. They are drinking in the information you are relaying as you describe what is happening in each book. As they get older and perhaps have a shorter attention span there are books that will help.

Children of a certain age group tend to be self centered (totally normal!) and if you start getting books which use the child’s name-it will certainly be a hit. Personalized books come for all age groups (even infants!) in all sorts of topics that will help your child learn about various lessons and keep them entranced, even if they are not into reading. For example, if for some reason your older child is jealous of a younger one-there is a book “What do Sister’s Do Best” to help a child learn that there is good in everyone! Most everything can be personalized with your child’s name these days. So, whether you are buying for your own child or as a gift, think personalization.

ITs so important to teach our children to read and to enjoy reading at a young age! It will just be that much harder for them if they wait until they start school to start reading!

My husband and I are voracious readers. I just hope our kids would do the same too. I think it is important to really try to make reading enjoyable for them.:)

My boys love to read. I have been looking for a good book series to start reading together.

What a great idea, I know that its hard to get kids in to reading with all the 'cool' techy stuff they have access too these books will help so much thank you.

I love giving books as a gift and the personalized books are awesome. I am a big reader and both of my children read a lot too. I think it is really important to be able to just sit and read. It is a great way to learn, escape from reality or just to sit in silence.

I love this post. We love books in our house. Brody picks up books and turns those pages and actually reads to me now. (He's only 3 yrs, but remembers what we have read to him).
It does pay off to start reading to children when they are infants.

I hope Brody continues to love books. Personalized ones are the best. He loves to hear his name.

My six year old son used to refuse to to read but he is now starting to love it. We read 20 minutes of everyday and he likes it..

You are so right--kids love books about them! They also like to imitate grown ups so the more they see mom and dad reading, the more likely they are to read.

I started with both of mine when I was pregnant. They both love story time so hopefully it worked a little!

My son loves to read....now. I don't know many guys that are as addicted to books when they get older but I hope he follows in my footsteps and is an avid reader :)

Giving our kids an opportunity to learn how to read well is an absolute gift of gifts!

I buy books for my toddler who is just starting his reading and learning how to read.

Excellent tip, Michelle!

You're so right! For some reason, kids LOVE to be read to! I've read to all my babies and they're just crazy about books. I have a personalized book for one of them and the other 2 are sooooo jealous. I will be buying one for them soon!

Love the post! It is important to read to them when they are little. I also love the idea of giving books as gifts. We need to get them interested early!
