$100 Amazon GC-Guest Post (Executive Command)-REAL FICTION VS. MADE-UP REALITY TV-Gary Grossman-2/28

This is a guest post by Gary Grossman author of Executive Command (Diversion Books).
To find out more about this really great writer of Thrillers go to www.garygrossman.com. One lucky person will win a copy of his book.

Here is the guest post:

Are you ready for your head to spin? I think I can make it happen.

We live in a world dominated by reality TV -- which isn’t real -- and a real world that is so often hard to believe. Got that? It’s upside down and backwards. Reality TV isn’t real. And the real world is something we don’t want to deal with.

By day, I’m a documentary television producer. Whether it’s through daily news programs or feature length docs, I look at the past and present with eyes wide open. But over the years, the more I saw, the more I realized what we were missing through the news and the noise.

Sure, TV would terrify us with threats of imminent Y2K and Mayan Calendar disasters. But what about that was real, Really real. Hard to tell when nearly everything around us had “reality” written all over it.

So, along the way I expanded from just non-fiction producing to producing fiction. I decided to explore what could be out there. I started asking “What if?” “How?” and “Why?” and maybe more importantly, “When?”

I believe it takes imaginative thinkers – people who think the unthinkable – to prepare for what could be inevitable.
Where does this thinking come from? Bureaucrats? Maybe some Leaders? Again, it depends. But more likely thinking the unthinkable is the realm of novelists, screenwriters and readers whose minds are open to the possibilities. Open to “What if?” “How?” “Why?” and “When?”

Now here’s the truly crazy thing. Once I started going down this road, in a weird way, I didn’t have to do all the critical thinking on my own. Whether my plots deal with sleeper cell spies or a terrorist working in open, the power of the vast media or the effectiveness of a lone assassin, an agent bringing down Air Force One or the enemy poisoning our water supplies -- my characters do the hard work for me.

Let me explain it another way. They basically sit me down and I take dictation. That’s right. They direct me. They take over. Sure it’s nuts. Like a Twilight Zone episode. But all my characters do it: Scott Roarke, my Secret Service agent; Katie Kessler, the young attorney he teams with; Richard Cooper, a deadly assassin; talk radio host Elliott Strong; Ibrahim Haddad, a revengeful terrorist; and Morgan Taylor the president of the United States. All contribute to the plots which move through “Executive Actions,” “Executive Treason” and now “Executive Command.”

It’s fiction. But I write about the dynamic geo-political realities which shape the world today; realities we should pay attention to; realities I try to bring forward through my political thrillers.
Sure I research. I research a lot. Detailed with experts I work with in the White House, America’s armed forces, the legal and medical community and the Intelligence services. But my characters take me where we need to go – around the world and in our own back yards. Scary stuff. Together we go to the “unthinkable” that we should be thinking about. Together we explore that “What if?” could happen. “How?” is this way. “Why?” is because. And “When?” That’s the scary part. “When?” could be now.
Real fiction. Not made up Reality TV.
