There have been many times it has been impossible so they have been given to charity. I do my best trying, if it doesn't work, they are gone

Safety pin attached to string / cord and thread it through pulling the string / cord.

slowly push it through to the other side.
Only way I know how to restring is to get a small safety pin, pin it to the edge of the string and inch by inch move it through until it comes out the other end. Works everytime :-)
I usually use a safety pin.

I either leave the string out or use a safety pin if I have to put the string back
