I have actually read this entire series--this is the prequel which explains what happened and how it all came to be.
Maude Prichard grew up in the Puritanical Massachusetts Bay Colony. Not a very nice place! She meets up with various people one of whom is a herbalist who takes her on as an apprentice with her families blessing. One day a really scary man shows up and somehow gets her to make a promise-he gives her powers in return. Meanwhile she is in love with a boy of a different faith--not allowed back then. She is forced to marry someone else. Eventually the boy comes back--her husband dies in a freak accident for which she is blamed. This was the time of the Salem Witch Trials and burnings--A bunch of people took off and ended up in Storm Island. What happens will freak you out!
This prequel is not for the faint hearted or for those with weak stomachs. I know I could not stop reading and there is a kind of cliff hanger at the end--another prequel coming?

Linda Watkins is the author of the multi-award-winning MATEGUAS ISLAND SERIES. She currently resides in Sedona, Arizona and, in another life, was a Senior Clinical Financial Analyst at Stanford University School of Medicine. In 2006, she packed her belongings and, along with her four rescue dogs, took the plunge and moved to a remote island off the coast of Maine.
