December 2016 | Miki's Hope

2016 is Ending--2017 is Beginning!!

Friday, December 30, 2016

This will probably be my last post for 2016--Of course there will be my Sunday Stroll that goes up every Saturday evening at 6:30 PM. I do promote it through Wednesdays. I totally understand that it is New Years Eve and a lot of you will probably be getting ready to either go visit friends or going out to party. I will be home--my days of going down to Times Square are far behind me! If I am even awake at midnight it will be a miracle. Of course my Cat Baby usually wakes me up about then--but sometimes she lets me sleep for an hour extra. My friends and family all call early or the next day--Times have changed!!

I did manage to read approx 140 books and review them according to Goodreads in 2016--I was trying for 150--but hey I'll take it with 3 hospitalizations! Of course I over did it on giveaways which didn't help. There were so many good ones and I know how you all love giveaways!! No more book reviews for 2016 and no more giveaways either--I really need to get my taxes in order and those of my bookkeeping clients (for their accountants)--they have already starting calling and emailing frantically. The good news is I am pretty sure I only have to catch up on mine for the last three months--hey I'm getting better!!

I'm contemplating a new sub topic for my blog which I think you will all enjoy--it is a subject close to my heart--of course I will still be reading and reviewing books and getting those giveaways up in 2017!!

I just checked and realized that I started this blog in January 2011--in just a couple of days will be the start of my 7th year blogging! It has been interesting to say the least and I have ALL OF YOU to THANK from the bottom of my heart for continuing to come and browse and comment and adding your giveaways to my Sunday Stroll--I truly appreciate and love you all!!

Book Review-Christmas Lovebirds: The Hart Family (Have a Hart Book 1)-Rachelle Ayala

Thursday, December 29, 2016

What an adorable book! Talk about the truth will set you free and even little white lies can cause a very big rift in relationships! Those poor little Lovebirds keep getting mixed up and lost causing all kinds of drama and heart ache--but can they bring together Melissa Hart and Rex Reed despite Meliss's MACHO, overbearing brothers and father (all firefighters)--a must read, feel good book by one of my favorite authors!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

If you love sweet romances (PG-rating), look no further than Rachelle Ayala's Have a Hart series. The Harts are a family of San Francisco firefighters. Their family motto is: Heart comes first.

Melisa Hart has a soft spot for her brother Connor’s ex-best buddy, Rob Reed. Unfortunately, Rob slept with Connor’s girlfriend and is no longer welcome with any of the Harts.

Melisa lends her pet lovebird for a Christmas Toy Drive, but a mix-up brings her face to face with Rob and his lovebird. Melisa is drawn into a whirlwind romance with Rob and discovers he hasn’t told her the entire story.

Can two little lovebirds and Christmas cheer open Melisa’s heart to giving Rob another chance?

Book 1: Melisa & Rob, Christmas Lovebirds
Book 2: Jenna & Larry, Valentine Hound Dog (watch for my review early February!!)

Book Review-Silver Bells at Moonglow-Deborah Garner

Wednesday, December 28, 2016

I loved Mistletoe at Moonglow (read my review here) so much that when I received this as a gift I read it right away! This is such a feel good series-but it can be read as a stand alone. Just like Mistletoe at Moonglow this is a novella and is a quick and oh so satisfying read.

Mist just seems to know how ro make everything perfect--from the meals she prepares--to the way she knows just what will make each person feel right at home in their hotel rooms. She also has a knack for making people happy--even when they are not.

The cookie exchange takes place at the Timberton Hotel----and guess what recipes are in the back of this book!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Christmas at the Timberton Hotel arrives each year with a unique set of guests, some returning, some new. When this holiday brings a celebrity seeking reprieve, sisters who are distant yet closer to each other than they think, a widow approaching a new horizon, and an eclectic smattering of local townsfolk and visiting relatives, the season is certain to be eventful. Add in a hint of romance and there's more than snow in the air around the small Montana town.

Elegant decor and exquisite cuisine from resident artist and chef, Mist, form a backdrop to much needed camaraderie, bringing strangers and friends together. When the last note of Christmas carols has faded away, the soft whisper of silver bells from the front door's wreath will usher guests and townsfolk alike back into the world with hope for the coming year.

Book Review-Vector Red: Epidemic of Genetically Altered Bacteria (Brier Hospital Book 12)-Lawrence W Gold, MD

Tuesday, December 27, 2016

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for another of Lawrence W Gold's Briar Hospital Books to come out. I am admittedly a lover of medical mysteries/thrillers and his are some of the best I've read. This one gives amazing insights into the personality of a mild mannered psychotic neurotic-mild mannered until things don't go his way.

Jacob Weizman, MD and his wife Lola, both survivors of the Holocaust, are again in this book built around the frightening concept of Biological Warfare. Even though the US is supposedly working on ways to counteract this horror---are they really? What might happen if in a US lab a Genetically Altered Bacteria is created by an eminent scientist (with major personality problems) discovers one and lets it loose over a part of the US? And what if he accidentally inserted the wrong strain?

Jacob almost loses hope while trying to save the lives of two sisters--both affected differently. It will take a combination of brand new and old time medicine--and Lola egging him on!

Do they catch the perpetrator? What happens to him? You will have to read the book to find out.

About the Book: (from Amazon)

The 1972 Biological Weapons Convention ended research on the offensive use of biological weapons, or has it? Features of the Patriot Act giving the US immunity from violating its own bioweapons laws has increased suspicion of US bioweapons activities.

While the world has a high degree of certainty that countries like Iraq, North Korea, Libya, Sudan, and Syria have continued offensive bioweapons research, the United States has limited itself to such research of a “defensive” nature only.

Teens and young adults returning from missionary work in Arizona come home with severe, and sometimes fatal bacterial infections. Is this an epidemic? Are these individuals contagious? The infections are unusual as common environmental bacteria, usually benign, have suddenly become aggressive and life-threatening.

Is this government policy gone awry, or is there a more nefarious explanation?

About the Author: (from author's website)

I was born in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, moved to Queens, and then, as New Yorkers say, my family ascended to the Island. After graduating from Valley Stream Central High School, I went to Adelphi, a college then, a university now, and then to medical school in Chicago. The war in Vietnam interrupted my postgraduate medical training with a year in Colorado Springs and another as a Battalion Surgeon in Vietnam. I spent seven months in the Central Highlands with the 4th Infantry and five months in an evacuation hospital in Long Binh outside Saigon where I ran the emergency room. I returned intact in 1968 to complete my training in internal medicine and diseases of the kidney, nephrology. I worked for twenty-three years in Berkeley, California in a hospital-based practice caring for patients with complicated illnesses often in ICU, and served as Chief of Internal Medicine and Family Practice. For many years, I was an active member of the quality assurance committee. Circumstances permitted my wife, Dorlis, and me to retire in October 1995. Before fate could intervene, we tossed off the dock lines, and sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge for a life at sea in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Four years later, exhausted from repairing everything on board, (often many times) we sold the sailboat and within a year took the lazy man’s out; we bought a Nordic Tug trawler. We motored around Florida, the Bahamas, and the entire East Coast and completed two ‘circle trips’ to Canada and back, eight months, the first time, five months, the second. I’ve written eight novels, five in he Brier Hospital Series, and one non-fiction book, I Love My Doctor, But…, a lighthearted look at the patient/doctor relationship. I recently published my ninth novel, A Simple Cure, about the search for the cure of the most deadly skin cancer, malignant melanoma. I write primarily to entertain, but I can’t help but pass on to readers observations and beliefs culled from years of practice, and yes, my biases, too. I strive for realism in portraying the medical scene which is gripping enough without melodrama or gimmicks. With even a minor degree of success in writing novels, comes responsibility to readers. I attempt to produce honest material that reflects my beliefs. Exposing these beliefs to the public through my writing requires courage, stupidity, or both. My fans have been generous, and although nobody enjoys criticism, I’ve learned much from that, too. The novel that expresses most clearly my candor, and my bias, is For the Love of God. The novel reflects my attitudes toward those who are willing to sacrifice the lives of their children for their personal religious beliefs.

We live in beautiful Grass Valley with 11 year old Bennie, a Yorkie who just looks like he’s on steroids and 2 year old Wesley, a long-legged terrier mix with the personality of a cat.

Book Review-Heather and Velvet-Teresa Medeiros

Wednesday, December 21, 2016

Long before I started book blogging--I read and loved Teresa Medeiros' novels!! I think I have read most of them-and reviewed 5 or 6 on my blog. She makes the characters come alive, even the minor characters, and no matter what there is always a comical touch to them. If you enjoy Historical Romance you are sure to love this one. It starts out as a kind of Cinderella story-but not really and what has to happen to get Sebastian (the man-not the cat)and Prudence together--well you will have to read it to find out!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Wounded in a foiled robbery attempt, Scottish bandit Sebastian Kerr must rely on the assistance of Prudence Walker, an innocent orphan.

"Mick" is a USA Today bestseller.

Indulge your inner vixen with these sexy billionaires!

Meet the Bad Boys... Four fiercely loyal, sinfully sexy, uber alpha brothers, about to fall head over heels for their leading ladies.

Everything's naughtier after dark...

Amanda Jenner is done being a boring-man magnet and has finally taken control of her love life. As any smart paralegal would, she's researched the hell out of how to seduce a man. She's waxed, primped, and ready to put her newfound skills into action--and a masquerade bar crawl is the perfect venue for her solo coming-out party.

Entertainment attorney Mick Bad lives by two hard and fast rules. He never mixes business with pleasure, and he doesn't do relationships, which makes the anonymity of a masquerade bar crawl the perfect place for a onetime hookup.

Amanda thinks she's hit the jackpot when she bags a tall, dark, and sinfully delicious masked man--until she discovers the man she's made out with is her off-limits boss. Mick's already crossed a line he can never uncross, and one taste of sweet and sexy Amanda has only whet his appetite. When Mick offers to give Amanda a lesson in seduction--no strings, no regrets, and for goodness' sake, come Monday, no quitting--the tables turn, and Mick's totally unprepared for the lessons this sweet temptress provides.

The Bad Boys are a series of stand-alone romances that may also be enjoyed as part of the larger Love in Bloom series.

Mesothelioma--One Man's Story

Monday, December 19, 2016

Back in 2013 I was asked by the Mesothelioma organization to post about this rare but deadly form of cancer caused by asbestos. You can read it here
Virgil contacted me just the other day and asked if I could post about Mesothelioma which he has! I said of course and he sent his bio to me which you can read below.

Mr. Anderson was born and raised in Williamson, WV.  His father, a coal miner, passed when Virgil was 8 years old. Virgil worked in demolition work and excavating since high school. This required the physical tear out, and hands on removal of asbestos containing insulation in walls, ceiling, attics and heating and cooling systems. To remove this required saws and sledge hammers all of which sent the asbestos fibers flying into the air. Unfortunately for Virgil the material had to not only be freed from its location but also picked up and carried to the disposal area. Once asbestos is disturbed it can stay in the air for 5 days. On some occasions there was a haze of dust and debris that you could actually taste in your mouth. He also came in contact with asbestos while working on his family’s farm. Virgil was recently diagnosed with mesothelioma, which is a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

When he was diagnosed with mesothelioma he needed immediate medical attention. He found a few websites on the internet that are supposed to help people with mesothelioma cancer but nobody got back to him.

Then he found Mesothelioma.net. Even though he contacted them on a Sunday one of their patient advocates gave him a call back within minutes. They gave him a great deal of helpful information on doctors and resources available to him.

As a result of their website, he is now being treated at the national cancer institute and the patient advocates have even provided him with financial assistance so he could afford a place to live during his chemotherapy. If he had not reached out to this website he would likely be homeless and more importantly in Hospice waiting to die. These people gave him his only chance at survival.

This man helped clean up our environment and has/is paying the price. Thank heavens there is a place that really cares! Won't you click in to Mesothelioma.net and read about the wonderful things they do
