Is The Water Safe To Drink?

Some of you might know that I have a BA in Environmental Science. What I have never mentioned is that my senior thesis was "A 5 Year Study on Volunteer Water Monitoring in the Croton River". We monitored not only the river itself. All the little rivers and streams including the overflow from the Croton River Reservoir were included in the study. We tested for oxygen, temperature of the water as well as other indicators of the waters health using test kits in ALL kinds of weather and in every season--as long as the water wasn't frozen and we could lower our bucket into that water. We also tested for Cadmium a carcinogen which was known to be in those waters. Ours was not a totally scientific experiment-there were many other volunteer groups and governmental agencies doing some serious water testing at the time. They may still be doing it especially since the Tappan Zee Bridge is being replaced and the sediments at the bottom of the Hudson are being released into the upper levels. But that was all outside-I cringe when I think my friends I used to swim in the Hudson River when we were younger!. Can you imagine how many contaminants seeped into our bodies through our skin? Well, we all know better now. But what about our drinking water--you know that stuff they tell us we should be drinking a LOT of each and every day. Just how pure is it?

One thing I learned in Geology class is that water picks up its taste from the rock formations it passes through on its way to the larger streams and rivers. If you have ever tasted water directly from the source I think you will agree it tastes a whole lot better then tap water. Tap water generally has additives like Chlorine or Fluorine and who knows what else added. It also has POSSIBLE dangerous additions which came through because industries allowed their waste water to escape and it entered the reservoirs or places where people go to get their water. Water is a universal solvent and will bind to almost anything!

According to what I read on Water Liberty's site:

"Black mica (also known as Biotite), a naturally occurring mineral, has been used therapeutically in Ayurvedic Medicine, one of the world’s oldest holistic and alternative medicines.

Although the black mica has a long history in health benefits, the specific use for healing the body and purifying water has not been explored. It was not until a Japanese Scientist, Dr. Asao Shimanishi, a Japanese Scientist, who discovered that the very same mineral, can also remove contaminants in water."

Picture from http://geology.com/minerals/biotite.shtml (also read about Black Mica (Biotite)

There is a lot of controversy about Adya Clarity. (Water Liberty's Water Purifying system) so I decided to try it for myself. I was sent the 2 ounce bottle of Adya Clarity. You can read all about it, what it contains etc by clicking into Water Liberty's site and using the tabs at the top.

(picture from site)

The directions on the bottle said to add 5 drops to 8 ounces of water. There are directions on the site (although I can't seem to find it again) that say to use a paper filter to filter the water before adding the drops to remove any large particulates. So off I went to my kitchen--I happen to have coffee filters (non chlorinated as in brown colored)-so I carefully measured 8 ounces of filtered tap water into a glass measuring cup-then added the 5 drops of Adya Clear. I let it sit for about 15 minutes. I should probably tell you that where I live the tap water tastes horrible straight out of the tap--it really does. I normally have to freeze it and then let it semi defrost before I can even think of drinking it!! A WIN--I took a couple of sips straight out of the measuring cup--(there was no residue at the bottom)-the water tasted GOOD!!!! No yucky taste what so ever!!

Although I can't see me using these drops in my house every time I want a glass of water-it would certainly be great if you were out somewhere and were not sure about what the water you are about to consume contains. Of course Water Liberty has other water purification products and you can read all about them. They can be found at the sites below-the urls can be found on their website--lots and lots of interesting information to be had.

This sounds interesting. I know our tap water isn't great to drink but I hate buying water jugs. I will have to look into this. Thanks!

It is so expensive buying bottled water. I think this is a good alternative. It is scary to think of what is in our water, especially looking at what is going on in Flint!

What a great post! Lots of interesting information and very timely considering what is going on in Flint MI right now. I travel a lot so I might pick some of this up for my travel supply bag.

I love the tap water where I live in Illinois. However, I hate the taste of the tap water where I live in New York. I have a PUR water filter here, or I buy bottled water, which I hate doing. The NY water really makes me appreciate my tap water.

We drink filtered water, but the fridge filters are costly. I'd love to be able to cut down on costs & pick some of this up.

I have heard drink tap water and not bottle water and then the opposite it is so confusing. I could use this especially when out in NYC!

I have never heard of this product before. I don't normally drink tap water, especially when I'm out. I think this will come in handy.

There are so many takes on safe drinking water it does get confusing, I haven't seen this product before it sounds great that it can make such a difference to your tap water.

Very facinating Michele! It definitely makes me think about the water we drink when we are at restaurants. Sometimes you get a glass of water that just tastes horrible. A lot of your post was definitely new info to me, thanks for sharing!

I actually buy bottled water because the water tastes horrible here in CO. I loved our water in Brooklyn, NY but can't get used to the one here. I'm like you. I can't see myself doing this every time I need a glass of water to drink.

I love this actually. We are heading back to DC to stay with some family again this April and the tap water down there is horrible. It tastes like bleach, so this would be awesome to bring with us.

Useful product, for sure. Especially for those who live in the areas with dirty and contaminated water sources. Yes, how much of the product do you need on hand to have access to clean water?
And what about the water for bathing? Drop a few drops and wait for 15 minutes?
Camping trips could benefit from this product, too.

Our tap water doesn't taste that great to me either. We ended up installing a reverse osmosis systems to get all the impurities out!

OH my Gosh! I didn't know you had a BA! That's awesome! I can tell you that we go through water here like there's no tomorrow. My oldest would prefer to drink water than any other beverage out there. Do you know if they ship to Canada? I would love to see how it works here with our water. Only time I drink the water from the tap is if I am using it in the Kettle when I make tea, Or when I have perked coffee in the morning LOL.

We have well water, which they say has been tested safe to drink but... we prefer filtered water, which is more expensive in the long run. Not sure I'd remember to use the drops.

I found this post very interesting to read. it was a great post. I didn't know half of the things you wrote about, but I always love to learn new stuff.

Very interesting idea. I have never had a problem with our drinking what in Oklahoma, but I refuse to buy into the idea of bottled water unless absolutely necessary. This might be a nice alternative. Thanks for giving it a try and letting us know!

Thanks for such an informative post! We use a Berkey water filtration system in our home, which we love. This would definitely be handy to have on hand when you're not sure how safe the water is to drink. Unfortunately, unhealthy water is far too common.

That was fascinating to read about your study from years ago, and I'm horrified for you that you swam in the Hudson River. Yuck! I'm with you on the drops. I'd bring them with me on outdoor treks, but probably wouldn't use them all the time at home.

This is very interesting. My daughter is also interested in geology! I'm going to show this to her.

We have hard water where I live and I am not a fun of how water tastes in the UK. Recently i visited my brother and his family and there water you can taste the chlorine big time so they have to buy water all the time. Such a lovely review

Angelic Sinova said...

With everything going on in Flint right now, its definitely important to be checking our water and making sure it's safe to drink and use. This definitely sounds interesting <3

Unknown said...

Oh this is so interesting. Bottle water is really expensive .. And tap water is not that great in UK.

Clean water is really important. It really helps to have purifying devices, filters and drops. It will save you a lot from water borne diseases.

Alli Smith said...

I never drink my tap water. It smells like bleach (chlorine). I've tested it before and it testing in the normal levels, but I don't really trust the accuracy of the test. These drops sound interesting.

There are so many things that are touched by tap water that it really makes you wonder sometimes. I know for drinking at least we never drink tap - not a pleasant taste at all.

We take things like this for granted. This was definitely interesting and worth reading.

It's always interesting to think about the safety of the water we drink. I have degrees in chemical engineering and I did some studies on water quality in school. It was very fascinating!

Heather Jones said...

I've used this stuff before. I'm glad we have stuff that helps us turn water back into a healthier state for consumption. Right now my water tastes a bit soapy and yes chlorinated. I should go back to using this stuff.

Unknown said...

I had no idea of your education! Thanks for sharing this tidbit about water safety!

It's really scary to think about what is in our water supply. There are so many toxins in our environment that it only makes sense that they would end up in the water.

Tough Cookie Mommy said...

This is definitely useful information especially during the Flint water crisis. It is terrifying to think that this could happen to our water supply.

Valerie said...

What an interesting product. I bet this would be great to have on hand when you are camping!

Aduke Schulist said...

That does sound like a great way to "treat" water on the go. I will add this to my "necessity" list.

Unknown said...

I learned a lot from your post. Between this and the situation in Flint Michigan, I'm discovering I need to be more mindful of the water I'm drinking.

Heather said...

An interesting post and one that could literally have me up for hours thinking about what I am introducing to my little girl’s body every time she drinks our water. It’s kind of cool but scary to think how all of the systems in place work and the things that we are being exposed to on a daily basis. Thank you for the new knowledge. I think I have some Googling and reading to do.

Your post has definitely given me a new perspective when it comes to drinking water. Never thought much about adding black mica to it either. Thanks for the info!

mail4rosey said...

Wow, a five year project is extensive (and admirable). I'm happy to hear the results from your experiment here!

Unknown said...

Wow, what an interesting perspective on drinking water. something to think about

stephanickety said...

This would be interesting to bring along. I never thought about this before.

I feel with all the craziness with water we keep hearing I the news, this would be a wise investment!

Look with the FLint crisis this is a wake up call to us all! Never heard of Black Mica thanks for the concept introduction!

I like the idea of having something on hand when I am out and about. Especially when I travel and I am not sure about the water.

Rose-Marie said...

This is good to know about. I do think about the water for drinking. We grew up with deep well water that tasted great. Now in a suburb with city water. I would want to be careful anywhere I go about drinking the water, and taking some precautions like this.

Mary Gardner said...

I had not heard of this product before but it is good to know. I usually buy bottled water but this would be good to have with me at restaurants.
