Book Review-The Great Game-D. R. Bell

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

This is a fast moving suspense thriller which should make you think long and hard about what really goes on behind closed doors in the financial and political arenas. It is a futuristic book--but the year 2020 is not that far into the future. Could this be happening-unfortunately yes. Is it happening-none of us knows for sure. Americans, myself included are much too complacent about what is going on around us, to us, and around the world. This book is a wake up call.

From the Author

This book was intended as more than a pure entertainment read. It is based on one possible result of our collective course of action - or inaction. You won't find apocalyptic visions, zombies, vampires, people with super-human abilities or even unconventional sex here. Just a story of two ordinary people trying to rise to a dangerous challenge against the backdrop of a changing world.

About the Book: (from Amazon)

After years of patient preparation, a block of countries led by China and Russia stages an overnight financial coup to unseat the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency. Fortunes are made and lost in a matter of hours. But some have more far-ranging plans than financial gain.

Computer engineer David Ferguson has no idea that a chance meeting with a friendly stranger in the airport will change everything. Suddenly, he is running for his life, without knowing why or from whom. In trying to evade his pursuers, David accidentally involves Maggie Sappin, a graduate student and a transplant from Kiev. To save themselves, they have to uncover the reasons behind a financial crisis and political upheaval that followed. From Los Angeles to Texas, Kiev, Moscow, and New York, the body count mounts along with the layers of deception as two innocent people become key players in—The Great Game.
This is a work of fiction. But what are presented in the story as facts of the time of writing are indeed facts in real life. And if some elements look hard to imagine, back in the early 1980s one would have been laughed at for suggesting that in a few short years people would be dancing on top of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union would be no longer.

About the Author: (from Bookclubreading.com)

D. R. Bell is a pen name. I grew up in the former Soviet Union, now live in the US with my family and an old beagle. I have graduate degrees in business and engineering and spent many years writing boring technical, business, and legal papers. This is my first attempt at writing fiction and I loved every minute of it.

The Great Game has been influenced by my growing in a communist society, the society that was started with noble intentions – but the end result of good intentions was a nightmare. The rights of individuals were being trampled in the name of the “greater cause”. The calls to equality were masking an advantaged elite gathering wealth at the expense of everyone else. I am not sure all the Americans appreciate how fragile a true democracy can be.
