Have You Ever Tried Mexican Hot Chocolate?

Friday, January 17, 2014

I didn't even know there was a Mexican version of Hot Chocolate until I was having my car inspected. While I was patiently waiting I decided to get something to drink and as it was freezing out that day I pushed the button on the machine that said Mexican Hot Chocolate. Now, as a diabetic I never should have pushed that button--but I was so cold-I had just had to walk up a steep hill in the freezing cold and was now waiting in a not much warmer waiting room! It smelled delicious and I took a sip-HEAVEN. I looked at the machine and it was Nestle Mexican Chocolate Abuelita.

It was creamy and smooth and oh so satisfying. It had a zing (spicy) to it and I asked the guy behind the counter who told me it was cinnamon, but to only get the Abuelita brand. I didn't tell him that I was going to try to recreate this for diabetic me!!

I looked around the internet and saw that mostly it was just cinnamon added but sometimes also a pinch of chili powder (no I have not tried that one!). There are low sugar and/or diet hot chocolate mixes out there-I bought the Swiss Miss one. I generally add water instead of milk since milk tends to raise my blood sugar. I also bought a Sweet Cream Creamer (liquid). I always have cinnamon in the apartment.

I do not measure so you really have to figure out what you like by taste--here are the approximations:

1 Mug
1 Envelope low or no sugar hot choclate mix
2 to 3 tablespoons of cinnamon
Boiling water (I boil water on the stove top)
Sweet Cream Creamer liquid (several different companies make this in the low fat variety)

In the mug-pour in the contents of one envelope hot chocolate mix and the 2 to 3 (or more) tablespoons of cinnamon.
Add boiling water to the mug leaving a bit at the top for the creamer to be added. Stir vigorously with a spoon!!
Add the creamer-stir

Enjoy!!

Please note: None of the companies I have mentioned above have any idea I am promoting their product and any other brands can be substituted for the ones mentioned above!

I've never heard of Mexican Hot Chocolate, but that does sound really good. I bet the cinnamon gives it a really nice flavor. I love cinnamon as it is, so I am totally tying this.

I have never heard of Mexican Hot Chocolate either but it sounds good. I am know I have cinnamon but not sure on the chile powder (or if I would like it that way). I do not blame you for breaking your normal diet to get warmed up.

I'm not adverse to trying it w/a pinch of chili powder. I love a bit of heat. :)

LOVE Mexican hot chocolate - the cinnamon part anyway. Like you, I'm not such a huge fan of the chili part. :)

Yes, I have, but do not like it. I don't care for hot chocolate with cinnamon - even with my Hispanic roots.

I used to drink Mexican Hot Chocolate all the time with my parents. I haven't had it in a long time though. I will have to get some :)

I found out about Aubelita hot chocolate when I was in high school and dating a mexican guy. It has been a favorite of mine ever since. I recently received a box of assorted items and one of the items in it was mexican hot chocolate. It also had chili in it, which gave it an extra kick!

Never heard about it but I'm going to the store tomorrow and they have a small section for Mexican stuff, hope they have this kind for me to try.

There is a hot chocolatier around my house that serves Mexican hot chocolate with chile powder in it. It actually is really good, although I was suspicious when I first tried it.

I really like the hot chocolate with cinnamon. It is very common here in Ecuador also. But since I'm allergic to cinnamon I don't drink it very often. Just when I absolutely need to (because I really really want to, lol)

I never thought of putting cinnamon in Hot Chocolate. I do add it to oatmeal cookies and it really makes a difference so I imagine it would with hot chocolate too. Thanks for the idea.

Cinnamon can really make a nice spice to add to hot chocolate. I mean we add it for apple cider, right? Why not hot chocolate?

Yes, I have and it is delicious. You can literally dip bread or churros in it and it is so thick that they could stand in it.
