What Should You Feed Your Starving Family in the Heat

Thursday, August 1, 2013

It is super hot outside, too hot to even think of grilling—the house is not too bad but if you turn on the stove----so what should you do. I have a couple of solutions.

1. Go to your local supermarket and purchase one of those pre-made chickens (they actually are very tasty) and a bowl or two of the pre-made salads. Walk over to the deli and ask for potato salad and any other salad your family likes. If you do not already have them in the house buy some paper plates and disposable utensils (you do not want to turn the dishwasher on either and these are desperate times so don’t worry about not being green!). Come home and set the table-put everything out. Add some bread or rolls and butter if your family likes that. Do not forget glasses (plastic) of iced cold water or iced tea. When you are finished most everything can either be refrigerated if not already consumed or in the case of the plates, etc-thrown out. Hand wash any platters you may have used-the dishwasher will just create heat. Now go relax in front of a fan with a pitcher of iced cold beverage near.

2. Take everyone and go out to eat! Even if you go to a fast food establishment it
Will be better then cooking.

Now obviously you can not do this very often-but on those 90 + degree days you really are better not cooking and just trying to stay cool and hydrated.

What an easy idea for chicken salad! Sounds like a plan for tomorrow night. Thanks, Michele.

Great minds think alike!! We had a chicken salad last week, the chicken had chinese sauce flavouring and I mixed some salad together with a couple of new offerings hoping the kids wouldn't notice, but they did lol x

LOL... we had one of the roasted chickens from Giant Eagle last night. They are so good and it is a cheap for us to buy it already cooked as to buy chicken and heat up our oven to cook it.

Great tips!

Great ideas! Rotisserie chickens aren't very expensive either so it's an affordable healthy option.

How right you are - Cooking on hot days is terrible! The salad idea is amazing and I will definitely keep that in mind!

I hate cooking in the heat too. I use my slow cooker all year and have found it to be a great way to cook in the summer. I also get deli meat and cheese for easy meals.

I stick to lots of fruits and veggies. Recently tried fruit bars. They are amazing and taste so yummy! The perfect way to cool down!

We've got unusually cool weather this summer, but if it was hot I would def. make a deli run. I've done that before. :)

These are good tips. I could live off the salad but the guys wouldn't be happy with that for dinner alone. Not even when it's hot. ;)

Great ideas. I just made a chicken like that yesterday in the crock pot; it'll last a good two or three days!

We do that!!! or have left overs. Might just have a salad tonight. It's a great idea to me but husband likes his steak...so we will see.

We do that with the chicken too! And some nights I declare as mom's night off so we go out!

Great ideas for those hot summer nights. I love those chickens too!

That will work! We make sandwiches when there's a heat wave (chicken salad, tuna, cucumber, or tomato).

That's my go-to meal when the thermometer is rising.

Wishing you a lovely day.

Love the chicken salad idea, in fact that is what I just had for dinner! Love the eating out idea too, but I find it so expensive!

We have an outdoor over so we can cook and not have it affect the temp inside the house, but I would rather get take out or hit the local restaurant too!

This time of year all I ever want is fruit or salad. The premade chicken is a great idea, we have it from time to time, we pull off what is left and make a chicken/pasta salad that is really good.

We have the chicken and potato salad a lot. We switch from the whole chicken to the fried chicken, always with Hawaiian rolls and everyone loves it. I love the eating out tip the most :)

I live in Florida and everyday is weltering, especially for this Michigan born and raised girl. In the summer we do lots of crockpot meals, salads, and mircowave meals.

We tend to cook out 6-7 days a week, even for lunch during the heat of the summer just so we aren't heating up the house.

That was a great post! I hate cooking in the heat and avoid it at all costs. Lots of salads and premade meals that I froze and then microwave.

This is exactly what my spouse would like to do, make something cold in a super warm weather.

Great ideas, thanks! We usually eat a ton of fruit and salads or cold meats in the summer. It's too dang hot to cook!

I do love our supermarket's premade chicken. Seems it's more cost-effective anyway to buy one rather than make one like it. Great tips!

Thanks for the tip! I love the ideas. And yes, I and my daughter are mostly always in the house and I admit, sometimes I am dehydrated (not my toddler because I prefer her to have first even without or I don't have) and yes, this is a great tips for energy conservation as well!

That sounds so good! I love roasted chicken! I know when it's to hot out I sure do not want to cook. I do not have good A/C and it gets 100 degrees here so I hate turning on the stove on them days!

Great tips!!! We don't liked to cooked in the grill nor use the oven when the weather is too hot and too humid! We buy food at the deli. That helps a lot!

We do buy the pre-cooked chicken at walmart when do not have enough time to cook. They are pretty decent.

Great ideas! I haven't had a rotisserie chicken in so long, but they're always delicious :) yum!
