If you have ever had to visit a relative in a nursing home you will be able to understand why these two sisters made a pact to die by the age of eighty. I watched my Grandmother in one with advanced dementia and I actually worked in a couple of nursing homes over the years in their accounting departments. It is not easy watching these once vibrant people slowly deteriorate. I more or less made myself the same promise all those years ago.
Of course life never ever goes totally smooth as we all know and love comes and goes. You meet someone and you know that he or she is the one--but then the summer or vacation is over and you have to go back. It is even worse when the love of your life goes into the army and is deemed missing in action. This is what happens to Jeanette--so she eventually gets married--
Fate plays a large part in this novel as does the love between sisters and family. Kim Cano is one of the great writers of our time who will make you feel and think, laugh and cry and in the end nod your head in agreement.

ReplyDeleteMy mother used to work in nursing homes and she hated it, she always wanted to bring her patients home with her. I am not sure I would make a pact like that begin that I have kids I want to be around for them as long as possible (unless I am a burden to them). I would love to read the book.

ReplyDeleteThe cover is a picture of my mom and Aunt Kathy. They were the ones who came up with the idea for the pact when they were kids. Now they just think they're cool because they're photo is on a book cover. :)
This was so moving. I couldn't work in a nursing home. It would drain me mentally.
ReplyDeleteI worked in a nursing home for several years and always felt like when someone is ready to let go, then they are ready to pass. We had someone that held on until her daughter flew in from Hawaii and then passed. I think deep down, she wanted to say goodbye to her daughter one last time.

It's hard but glory to God I have the strength to help them in their time of need, because they cared for me without qualm.

ReplyDeleteThe premise of this book is so intriguing! Such a current topic, but in a setting you wouldn't always think of. I still remember caroling in a nursing home when I was young and being a little traumatized by some of the conditions I saw there.

I can't recall any childhood pact that I made. My oldest son, however, made a pact as a kid that he would never turn into a snotty teenager. It didn't stick. He's 17 now. Lol.
