Fruit Salad Trees - Who Knew

I was scouring the internet the other day looking for inspiration and came across something that really interested me, Fruit Salad Trees. Yes, you read that correctly-Trees that bear more then one kind of fruit. Actually, once I thought about it this made perfect sense. Many times while walking through or driving through wooded areas I saw trees that were sporting both Oak and Maple leaves. It is through the process of one type of tree somehow NATURALLY grafting itself onto another tree that this can occur. So why did I never think of this in terms of fruit trees. Of course this grafting is done purposely by whoever is selling them—but what a great idea with the cost of fresh fruit rising with each day. And like I said, this process does occur naturally in nature.

This would be the perfect solution to those of you out there who have small backyards—imagine having oranges and lemons on the same tree that you could then harvest for yourself, or perhaps pears and apples. Yes, they do sell these kinds of trees—even in the Bonsai variety if you prefer or have less space! Of course you do have to live in the correct climate for the particular combination. There are many sites that sell these-one even sells one for a backyard that has 4 types of fruit. Now that would make one delicious fruit salad!

My apartment tends to be dry and hot—not a great environment for bonsai tree growing-but I am so tempted (maybe I would not kill this?) I would also have to make sure that the leaves were not toxic to Baby (the cat that would definitely either eat the leaves-or knock it over in a fit of temper). Hum, my Mom may not be going to Florida this winter (or so she says)—would be a great gift for her-she is really good at making things grow and does not have a cat! Then I could grab some of the fruit off her tree!!

  2. I also read about fruit salad trees this past week while surfing around the internet. I think I saw it on a WTF Facts Facebook page, which I always get sucked into because there is so much interesting and fun information people find. They are definitely interesting and I am always so impressed by nature and its ability to adapt and develop. It's truly an amazing thing. Also, speaking of Bonsai trees, I just so happen to have an outdoor Bonsai tree giveaway going on. *cough* Just sayin'...

  4. That is seriously cool! I would want it to grow berries too though lol. Like I'd have strawberries, blueberries, bananas, watermelon, and cantelope growing on the same tree! Ok, only bananas actually grow on trees but that would be awesome!

  9. What a smart idea! I wonder if I can talk someone into making me a salsa plant that grows my tomatoes, jalapenos and cilantro all on one plant. :-)

  12. This is a great idea. We have a a huge yard but it is full of dirt and bugs, nothing grows there. I would love something small for inside the house.

  16. Very interesting. I wonder how popular they are. Or what happens when the limes pollinate with the oranges.

  17. Our next door neighbor has a fruit salad tree as well. They are a fanatic gardener and their yard is full of fruit trees. He told us one time about the salad tree, it's interesting. We get to enjoy the fruits as well.

  18. So cool! Mr. Kerrie is afraid of fruit trees b/c of the bugs, but I think if you have enough land you don't have to worry about it.

  19. Finally Gardening made easy and something I might actually be able to grow. As I do have a Bonsai Tree I figured I would end up killing but it is still living so in a new house I could try this. Thanks for sharing.

  20. When I was in college I worked summers grafting apple and peach buds onto hardy root stock. We worked in teams of two, one making the graft and the other wrapping it. We split $30 per thousand trees and we could easily do 2,000 a day and finish before it got too hot. That was $300 a week back in the early 80s. I'd love to have a lemon tree someday. :)

  22. Oh my gosh!! I had never heard of a fruit salad tree! It just seems like not such a good idea. It reminds me of GMO's and stuff. I'm sure it's not but I wouldn't buy one.
