Life of Pi- a Book-Soon to be a Movie!

Thursday, November 29, 2012

In 2001 author Yan Martel brought the character Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, into the homes and hearts of every fictional literature lover in the world. The UK edition of the book won the Man Booker Prize and the French literary contest, Le Combat Des Livres in 2002, the 2003 South African award the Boeke Prize and in 2004 and won the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature in Best Adult Fiction for years 2001–2003.
Needless to say, Life of Pi has carved itself an undeniable niche within the face of literature that would take a great deal of effort to remove. And now, legendary, academy award winning director Ang Lee, the genius behind film masterpieces such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000) and Brokeback Mountain (2005) has brought Life of Pi to the silver screen.
The much anticipated movie will be showing in December of 2012 and has already received some rave reviews. The screenplay, written by David Magee the writer behind Finding Neverland (2004) is cleverly and sincerely adapted from the words of the literary great and really does bring a whole new lease of life to the story.
As young Pi sees his family move from their zoo home in India, setting sail for the shores of Canada for a better life, nautical disaster befalls him. The young Indian somehow survives the shipwreck and finds a lifeboat. With only a zebra, a hyena, an orang-utan and a Bengal tiger for company he goes through a series of amazing, life affirming events all of which are magically yet effortlessly portrayed by some of the most spellbinding, magnetic scenery and post- production we have seen this year.
Visit the Vue Cinemas website for a more in depth synopsis and trailers of the movie as well as a behind the scenes look at the work that brought this amazing movie to life.

Does Your Cat look at Your Reflection in the Window?

I just noticed this the other day--Baby will stare for hours at my reflection in the window. And if that reflection moves (I stretch in my chair for instance) she really makes sure to watch-even if she has to stretch her neck. Intermittently she looks at me-then back at the window. One way or another Baby keeps track of me!! Now I have had dogs in my life but none of them used to dog my footsteps like this cat does!!

When she sleeps--she is dead to the world--and I mean seriously--so to make sure I don't leave the house without her knowing she "naps" in a shopping cart that has some old stuff that I was going to throw out in it right near the front door. The door opens and her little head pops up and she gives me her sad stare. Baby's eyes are extremely expressive.

Yes, she is a rescue and I really wish I knew what happened to her before she came to her furever home with me--but all in all she is a loving little girl (even when she plays tag you're it with my leg or decides that I have spent enough time on the 'puter and need to watch TV!!) Did I mention that Baby is extremely stubborn (and VOCAL-she loves to talk to me)?

Well, she is calling me now---so I will stop typing and go see what her majesty wants-----

Ink, Ink—Which Ink Should I Use?

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

There are virtually 1000’s (or so it seems to me) places to buy ink for your printer. Each printer has its own numbered ink cartridge. The type of ink cartridge you can purchase runs from refurbished ink cartridges to brand spanking new ones direct from the manufacturers on most of these websites. Of course you can go direct to the manufacturer’s website as well-but that does tend to be slightly more expensive! So which one really works best and which one will work best for you?

I know at one of my jobs we used to buy refurbished ones—then switched back to the manufacturers brand because the colors were just not as distinct and we were using it for marketing. There was also the problem that I personally had once where the refurbished ink cartridge literally caused my printer to stop working forever—the printer was so gummed up with ink where it was not supposed to be that my printer stopped working—I did buy a new printer and used manufacturers ink from then on!!!

Well, my printer is not working once again-nothing to do with the ink this time-more to do with its useful life!! So here I go again looking for a printer. If laser printers weren’t so expensive I’d probably look into one of those—but ink jet it will have to be. Now call me crazy but I am tending to look at the price of the ink first because that is where the real cost comes in. So far I’ve looked at Hewlett Packard, Canon and Epson Ink----It is so very confusing that I will probably ask the IT guy where I work for some advice.

So, when you need or are just looking for a new printer-how do you go about it—printer first or ink first.

Do You Have Any Family Traditions?

Family traditions are rituals that help the family stick together. By starting consistent, healthy family traditions, you boost your emotional well being while making it fun for everybody that’s involved.

As human beings we have a strong need to belong. Family traditions give us a sense of belonging and the security that we crave for. In the following article we look into a few simple ideas that you can apply to establish family traditions that go a long way.

1. Have Weekly Family Date Nights: Family dinners are great way to bond with each other. However, they can get boring and predictable after a while. One way to make things fun is to go out on a family date night, once a week, and do something new. Whether it’s hitting your favorite picnic spot or trying out that new restaurant in town, the idea here is to explore, learn and live together.

2. Hold an Easter Egg Hunt: It stands as one of the most popular family traditions. Finding goodies that are hidden around the house is not only a fun activity, but is also challenging. Parents enjoy hiding these goodies and the kids love searching for them - which makes it so exciting.

3. Decorate Bedroom Doors: Regardless of what festival is on, decorating your house in different ways with your family is a tradition that’s worth it. It's a good idea is to get creative with your bedroom doors. Get your kids involved and let them take the lead in house decoration. Give them lights and craft that they can use to make their bedroom doors unique.

4. Bake Some Cookies: We all love holiday festivities. What better way to get into the holiday spirit than baking delicious treats? Getting your family involved into baking and decorating cookies is a simple yet enjoyable activity. It gives each of member the opportunity to try their hand at being creative in the kitchen.

5. Decorate Bathroom for Xmas: The bathroom is important as any other important room, since guests will be visiting it during the Xmas season. As a family you can work together on making it more apt for the holiday. How? First and foremost, keep it simple. Hang Christmas related photographs or get the kids to create their own artwork to hang on the walls. Besides this, you can use fabric paint to turn plain towels into Christmas towels. Finally, don’t forget decorating with Christmas plants and flowers such as poinsettias, mistletoe or holly.

Do You Know How to Manage and Organize Your Business?

Monday, November 26, 2012

From small companies with one or two employees to mega corporations the need to organize your work flow and your employees, even if it is just you, is necessary to the financial health of your company. It will also enhance your earning potential.

Do you know the steps to organizing your business? Can you tell if the job is being done correctly? I generally can tell, because of working with so many people over the years including accountants.

Knowing what needs to be done and in which order and to be able to choose the correct person for the job(s) at hand is not always easy. I know—as a bookkeeper for well over 20 years and the accounting manager at several different jobs over the years—this task has fallen to me numerous times. My AS in accounting has served me well—but there are times I wished that I had an organizational management degree as well!!

I had to learn by trial and error-not the best way to learn. And honestly I still can not make head or tails of organizational charts-except for maybe the most simple. Do you know the questions to ask your employees to ascertain #1-can they do the job and more importantly #2-are they going to enjoy what they are doing? If someone happens to be good at a job but really does not like what they are doing-well-they are going to do a slip shod job of it-not what you want. Always try to match employees with what they like to do. This is not always possible to do—but try!! And, if it happens to be only you in the company-enlist the aid of friends or outside contractors to help you with what you really do not want to do or don’t have the time to do.

One thing I know for a fact—those with a 4 year college degree make more money then those who do not, and there is a definite need for people with this skill set under their belts.

Are Banks Going Too Far?

Saturday, November 24, 2012

I think so—they are, in my humble opinion-trying to strong arm the public and the politicians with larger and more ridiculous fees!! And the politicians are allowing it!! They are also coming up with insane excuses to stop your credit cards—not that that is such a bad thing. Actually, after what happened last night—I am voluntarily NOT going to use credit cards any longer. I will pay off what I owe eventually—but from this day forward—it is debit cards or prepaid cards for me!! An early New Year’s resolution-one I intend to keep.

Last night I attempted to purchase a gift for a “secret sister” using one of my credit cards—(I will leave the name of the bank anonymous)—it just would not accept the card—finally in desperation (since I was unaware of any problems) I called the number on the back of the card. After explaining the situation—(after finally hitting enough numbers to get to an actual human being) I was told that a new card would be issued to me but I would have to speak to the credit department to have it sent out quickly—1st outright lie!! Well—after having to give financial info-I was informed that because I had supposedly reported a card for fraud in 2007-they could not issue another card-I would have to get that off all 3 credit bureaus—in my opinion-lie number 2—I am NOT going to bother!! They have just lost a customer. And a very good one!!

After I fumed for about 20 minutes—wrote to the person I am going to buy from that I would have to wait till I was paid—I immediately googled prepaid credit cards—to say the info is somewhat confusing is an understatement (and I am a bookkeeper)—I went to a private facebook group and asked this question “Do any of you use pre paid cards and which one?”
This is a group with a great group of women and I received answers immediately!!

I sent in my application for the PayPal Debit card and will go out after I get paid and get a Greendot pre paid card—those along with MY banks debit card I should be okay. From now on it is CASH all the way—if I could figure out an easy way to get out of the banking system altogether I would---but at least I am done with credit cards (except paying them off)—and from what I am hearing-more and more people are doing this—

What is your opinion? I’d love to hear it!!

Top 10 New Years Resolutions

Friday, November 23, 2012

With 2012 drawing to a close, many of us are beginning to review our life and achievements over the past twelve months. Maybe you have had a great deal of success professionally, or maybe you have fought or are fighting a serious illness.

The dawn of a new year forces us to look at the past, and start to plan our future. It’s a chance for brand new beginnings, or to close a virtual door on matters you want to move on from. It’s the main reason we make New Years Resolutions.

Here are the top 10 New Years Resolutions for 2013:

Spend more time with friends and family – The number one resolution that over 50% of Americans make year after year. We are all so busy working, trying to make ends meet and rushing around that several months can pass and we haven’t made the effort to see any of our loved friends and family

Stop Smoking – It takes smokers an average of 4 attempts to stop smoking before they finally quit, so even if you have tried and failed to quit in the past, don’t let that get you down

Make an ecological effort – Creating a more sustainable and eco friendly lifestyle is becoming increasingly important to families all over the world. Communities like the Bruderhof have perfected the art of sustainable living; having shunned the ‘disposable’ lifestyle trap many of us have fallen into.

Get Fit – Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. It can reduce the risk of certain cancers, achieve and maintain weight loss and lower blood pressure, as well as have a multitude of other positive effects on your body and mind. It doesn’t need to be the gym, just taking a half hour walk every day is a great start.

Tame the bulge – Over 66% of Americans are overweight or obese, so it comes as no surprise that setting weight loss goals features heavily on most peoples resolution lists. Keys to success include setting realistic goals and sticking to a tried and tested weight loss program.

Enjoy Life More – Most of us lead busy, hectic and stressful lifestyles and yearn to be able to just sit back and enjoy the simple things a little more. Trying something new helps put a fun new perspective on life.

Get out of debt – Millions of Americans will pledge to spend 2013 getting on top of their finances.

Learn something new – This resolution goes hand in hand with enjoying life more. Education is one of easiest and most motivating New Year resolutions to keep, and could be as simple as reading a book you’ve always wanted to tackle, or as challenging as learning a new language.

Help Others – Volunteering is a fantastic way to give something back to the community, and you will be amazed how good being altruistic makes you feel. Even if you only have an hour to spare each month, there are hundreds of charities that would be grateful of this time.

Get organized – Being more organized at work and home will have an extraordinary effect on your life, helping you become less stressed and more likely to achieve your goals.

This article was written by Kathryn Thompson, a freelance writer and mom to three young daughters. Sick of rushing around in the morning, Kathryn’s top New Years resolution is to get more organized in 2013.

A LIFETIME OF NEGOTIATING

Thursday, November 22, 2012

In order to be master negotiators-on the scale of world leaders or lawyers or politicians- we all need negotiation training.

Our initial negotiating skills begin while very young--one or the other of our parents say “do this—or else”. Although not truly negotiating since we really do not have a choice at that point in our lives it is the beginning. As we get older the “or else” turns into—if you do this-you can do that”. For example, if you want a certain toy you might be told “if you clean your room I will get you the toy you desire”. Or you might see a very young child try to hand another very young child a toy in the hopes that he or she will be handed the toy the other child is holding. This too is a simple negotiating act. By the time you reach your teens you have simple negotiating skills down pat! Suddenly it is “If I do this can I do or get that”. Or you might observe a teen saying to another teen—“if you lend me your blouse, I will lend you the dress you want to borrow”. Of course negotiations don’t always work out the way children or teens want!!!!! And warfare can and does occur along with temper tantrums!! But then parents are dictators, no matter how benevolent—they call the shots. The skill set is in place, ingrained in our subconscious—it is time to enter the world outside our homes.

Ok, we have made it through high school—we have negotiated someone else’s knowledge of Math for our knowledge of say English. It is time to enter college or the workplace. In college we still use the simplistic negotiating skill of you help me with this and I will help you with that. At that first job—I want this amount of money and this is what I am willing to do for it-or the owner says I will pay you this if you are willing to do that. Most people never get beyond this type of negotiating skill, but with additional training-they can!!

There is ALWAYS Something to be THANKFUL for!

There is always something to be thankful for:

For your furbaby even if she wakes me up at 2 am every morning by knocking over my computer and has suddenly decided that at 6 pm I'd better be in the living room watching TV while she snuggles at my feet or will MEOW loudly until I do!

For my friends (online and off) who are there for me when I need it most even if we don't see or hear from each other for years.

For my family

For my stubborn streak (and it is a mile wide)-for without it I would not have been able to control the Diabetes I acquired this year and been taken OFF the meds after only 2 months!

To be able to still help others once in a while

And lastly for all the little things that happen daily in my life-----

To EVERYONE from Baby and myself

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

How to Teach Your Children Safe Web Browsing Habits

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

There can be no doubt about it—the World Wide Web can be an outlet for some of the most dangerous activity. Lots of us are worried that our children will accidentally run into some hardcore pornography site or one that otherwise contains material that is not suitable for children to view—but that is only part of the picture. Each year, millions of children receive emails from strangers without their parents' knowing about it. Too many of these online “meetings” end badly, with the child being kidnapped and sexually abused or even killed. Even in those cases where they are rescued, the emotional scar of their experience remains with them for the rest of their lives. One need only watch the Touched by an Angel episode “Pandora’s Box” to see how bad it can be. Often, too, children accessing an unfamiliar website end up inadvertently downloaded programs that are harmful to the computer on which their parents store valuable files such as tax information.

Software manufacturers, well aware of the severity of the problem, have designed programs designed to enable parents to control what their children view in various ways, whether by blocking off undesirable websites or by alerting them if a child is trying to access such a site. But these kinds of programs, though great to have, are not enough. After all, they will some day become independent of you and be able to make their own Internet decisions. Even more important in the long run, therefore, is teaching children to develop safe browsing habits. This article will teach you how to do that.

Establish clear rules

There is nothing like a set of rules—and rules that are clearly stated—to keep children in line, along with a set of specific consequences for breaking them. In the case of surfing, avoid telling your children about the parental control software that helped you catch them “with their hands in the cookie jar.” As long as they remain in the dark about its existence, you will have the upper hand with regard to surfing. Rules that you can set up should include the following:

Never download any software from an untrusted site. Teach children to be suspicious if they receive the message that ActiveX controls are needed to proceed.

If they receive threatening emails, they must tell you about it.

Remember that people one may have met online are still strangers and children must, therefore, be wary of meeting them in person. They may not be anything like what they say they are.

Also use your desktop to set up shortcuts that lead to child-friendly sites such as sesamestreet.org or nick.com. That way they become accustomed to such sites at an early age.

As your children are maturing, you will want to nurture in them the values that will steer them away from bad websites, whether or not you are watching them. This involves teaching them to love good behavior and hate bad behavior for their own sake. Encourage them to develop healthy relationships with you and with their teachers and schoolmates.

Set a good example

Making rules for children is something that must be continually reinforced by setting a good example. Children learn correct behavior first and foremost by observing that of their own parents. Therefore, you should not visit any sites that you would not want your children to visit. You would not want them to catch you looking at disgusting pictures of women’s private areas, would you?

Constructive use of the Internet

The final element in instilling positive surfing habits in the young lies in remembering that the Internet can also be used for constructive purposes. Children can use email or social networking sites such as Facebook to chat with friends and relatives. They can also surf the web to find information that they may need to do their homework assignments (though there are also many “cheating” sites like homeworksucks.com, so be sure and look into that too). You should therefore encourage them to use online resources in this way—but not to let surfing take the place of other activities.

How to Make Hand-Me-Down Decorations and Furniture Seem New!

Furniture and decorations from past generations are filled with memories. They can be remembrances of yesteryear, a reflection on how one’s grandparents lived or even a direct link to one’s past. Often, these mementos are given from one generation to the next as a hand-me-down. However, no matter how beautiful or personally significant these pieces may be, they usually need a bit of cleaning to bring out the best in them. Other times, they need new life breathed into them by way of a complete makeover. Even for those who are creatively challenged, there are certainly numerous ways to make hand-me-down decorations and furniture seem like new.

Clean It

Sometimes, all that a decoration or piece of furniture needs is a deep cleaning. Depending on the item’s size, age and materials, this may be a project for a professional, or the individual may tackle it. Products typically found in most households make excellent cleaners.

 White vinegar is a cheap and natural cleaning product. It can remove hard water stains, built-up dirt and more. Its acidity is excellent for removing sticky residue from surfaces and for removing food and drink stains from carpeting. In addition, it is non-toxic.
 Baking soda is also non-toxic and is wonderful for removing odors from furniture and rugs. Mixed as a thick paste with water, it can be used to clean tarnish from silver.
 Rubbing alcohol makes glass extremely shiny. It is excellent on mirrors and windows.

Paint or Refinish It

Some hand-me-down furnishings are in great shape, without dents or nicks, but need an updated color or some loving attention where the finish is becoming worn. This is where painting and refinishing can work wonders. One does not have to be a professional to do this sort of project.

Of course, refinishing is a bit more work than painting. Most likely, the piece will need to be stripped and sanded before two coats of varnish and a coat of polyurethane can be applied. Painting is a more forgiving and easier process. Painting can also be a creative process for those who are interested in stenciling a design on the piece. If the piece of furniture to be refinished does have some deeper scratches or gouges, wood putty is the perfect filler. Finally, to make the piece feel truly new, one could add new drawer pulls or other hardware depending on what type of furniture it is.

Reupholster It

Many older furnishing were made in beautiful shapes and sizes. However, the upholstery may be completely outdated or even worn out. This is another project that may be best tackled by a professional, particularly if the chair, sofa, pillow or headboard is quite large or is a unique shape. On the other hand, many individuals feel that with the online tutorials and helpful do-it-yourself books available at libraries today, this is a project that they can tackle themselves.

If this is a project that one chooses to do himself, there are a couple points of which he should be aware. First, he should wear a mask over his mouth and nose to protect his lungs from dust and other fibers as he removes the old upholstery. Second, this is the perfect time to replace the foam padding and batting with new materials as well.

Repurpose It

Some people receive hand-me-down decorations or furnishings that they love but for which they have no use. Repurposing these items can give them new life. The options here are as limitless as one’s imagination; however, a few ideas are listed below.

 A roll-top desk can make a fabulous gardening work station with cubby holes for seed packets and drawers for tools. The surface can be used for potting plants.
 A dresser can be placed in an entryway. The drawers corral hats and gloves while the surface provides a space for mail and keys.
 An old vase can become a candle holder, a receptacle for bath salts or a kitchen utensil holder.

A hand-me-down decoration or furnishing does not have to stay locked into a era. Instead, it can become something new by using one of these techniques. This way, memories can be preserved for years to come.

Kindle Fire HD Giveaway-The Son's of Jude Book Review-2/15/2013

Monday, November 19, 2012

This is a book about good cops and bad cops in Chicago, where politicians and “the family” make strange bedfellows and where a newspaper reporter and a cop actually join forces in a city riff with corruption. To say I enjoyed this read is an understatement—and the ending is a cliffhanger!! First in a series of gritty, fast-paced crime thrillers with an ethical twist,
I will be definitely be purchasing the sequel!

From the back cover:

Saint Jude is the patron saint of lost causes – and police officers.
When Chicago detectives Frank Campello and Andy Polanski are assigned to investigate the murder of Trina Martinez it seems like an ordinary homicide. An unfortunate young girl in the wrong place at the wrong time has been brutally murdered. But their investigation is halted by a wall of silence, a wall formed by powerful interests that will render their inquiry a lost cause.
Then they enlist the support of reporter Christy Lee- and come under immediate fire. Polanski is arrested. Campello threatened. Christy is attacked.

Book Review/Giveaway-Kindle Fire HD-Mr. Breeze – Morrie Richfield-1/13/2013

First off I’d like to say THANK YOU to Morrie Richfield for writing this incredible inspirational fantasy!! Second-in my humble opinion-I think it should be translated into every conceivable language and read by literally everyone in the world!!

“What if everything we were ever taught to believe about God, religion and who we are was wrong. What would we do if we came face to face with our maker?” (from back of book)

Michael Ryan-a photo journalist keeps hearing stories about someone who seems very ordinary but does extraordinary things—like saving people who are as close to death as they can be. Michael at first is skeptical, but having heard the same type of tales from many people decides he wants to meet this person. He finally does and the journey he takes with Mr. Breeze is nothing short of incredible.

There is a warning on the last page of the book from Mr. Breeze---which is all he ultimately asked Michael to do –no I’m not going to write it for you—you will just have to read this journey for yourself!

“Morrie lives in Pennsylvania with his two sons, his dogs and his cat. He is working on his next novel (you better believe I will be reading it), and he still dreams that someday the world will be a better place for us all to live.” (from back cover)

Guest Post - Merry Ex-Mas by Sheila Roberts

Sheila Roberts tells us why she writes!! Pick up your copy of Merry Ex-Mas at Amazon:

WRITING BONUSES

People often ask me how long I’ve been writing, or how I come up with my story
ideas, but they rarely ask me why I write. Maybe that’s because they figure the
answer is obvious. You write because you love to. Well, true. I do. I have a great
time sitting at my computer and spinning out stories.
But there are other reasons why I write. I call them writing bonuses. One of those
bonuses is getting a chance to taking pleasure in a job well done. When I read a
funny scene I’ve written, when I make myself laugh, well, that’s just plain fun.
Rather like having a fabulous volleyball smash or hitting a golf ball long and
straight. It’s not so fun when I discover a mistake in a book that’s already been
published. Wah. Not so fun when I read something I wrote a couple years ago and
think, I could have done that better. Double Wah. But for the most part, I enjoy
seeing those words appear on my computer screen, and later, on paper. Once in
awhile I’m downright profound!

Another bonus is the fun that comes along with a finished book. I think
promoting a book is nearly as much fun as writing one. I’ve promoted my novels
in any number of ways in the past, but the music video we made that goes along
with Merry Ex-mas has got to hit the top of the list for a great time. (Check out
Merry Christmas Mama on Youtube and you’ll see me in action.) That was quite
the party. The Tracyton Pub allowed us to come in one Sunday evening and
take over. And take over we did, redecorating and making the place look like
Christmas in April (which is when we filmed). It was an unseasonably hot night
and there we all were in our Christmas sweaters, sweltering. But what a hoot.
That was some party and one I’ll always remember with a big smile.

Speaking of parties, I love to entertain. So when I have a book out I get into party
mode. I have a great time thinking up games to play, finding party favors, and
putting together gift baskets. And I have a great time visiting with readers.
And that brings me to the biggest bonus of all: readers. I can’t think of anything
more rewarding than getting a chance to visit with people who love books. And
when someone tells me she loved mine, it makes my day. Yes, we writers love
to write, but it’s no fun to write without someone to write for. So let me just say
thank you to all of you who put down hard earned money for a book, who take
time out of your busy day to read the stories people like me dream up. You’re the
best bonus of all.

Now on to the post:

The Pleasures of Research

I'm a writer, a novelist, and I usually enjoy the research that comes before the
drafting of any novel. Sometimes I sift through the library or the internet, but
sometimes I want the first-hand experience. Because I write crime novels, and
because I come from a long line of police officers and was once employed with
the FBI, I often draw on my experience to add a level of credibility to my work.
I've been in prisons, county jails, and lockups. I've fired all types of weapons,
and have ridden in patrol cars with sirens blaring. This is important in crime
fiction because the reading public is far more sophisticated today than it was
in the time of Chandler or Hammett, thanks to television shows like Law and
Order.

Although I have written a number of crime thrillers, I usually chronicle
the exploits of Colton Parker, an ex-FBI agent-turned-private eye based in
Indianapolis. In THE LOST SHEEP, a novel featuring Colton, I knew it would be
necessary to set the story in Las Vegas, a city I'd never visited. In order to lend
an air of authenticity to the book, I decided to take a trip. I took a friend along
with me (who we shall hereinafter refer to as "George" - not his real name) who
had once lived in the city and who agreed to shepherd me around.
We arrived early one evening in February and went directly to a casino. Given
the fact that a good number of my novels take place in seedy locales, the
casino trip was for my own edification rather than as a setting for the story.
Still, George thought it was a good idea and I went along. Easy me.

Within a few minutes, we were standing at a table while George explained
the nuances of the game. We weren't there very long before I felt a presence
looming over us. I turned to find two of the biggest security officers I'd ever
seen standing directly behind us.

"What are you doing?" one of them asked.

"Uh, he's explaining the game to me," I said.

"Are you counting cards?"

I thought he was kidding. "One: I'm not playing. Two: I can't count." I smiled.

"Are you a funny guy?" He wasn't kidding.

I looked at George. "It wasn't a real knee-slapper," I said, "but it wasn't half
bad."

"Look," the other guard said, "if you don't leave, we're going to arrest you."

George tugged at my jacket. "C'mon. Let's get out of here."

We left the casino and began walking south along the strip. Across the street
from our position was a rather nice-looking hotel. George explained that the
elevators slide sideways rather than vertically, and that I should ride them for
the experience. Being from southern Indiana where we don't have such things, I
agreed.

Easy me.

We entered the very nice lobby of the beautiful hotel and began riding the
elevators. They did indeed did slide upward at a near forty-five degree angle,
quite different from anything I'd ever seen

The Reason I Wrote "The Bloody Mary Club" - Debbie Dyke

Thank you for inviting to post to your blog! I’m the author of The Bloody Mary Club, a financial thriller about an all women investment club that gets into trouble when their portfolio turns deadly. I’m very passionate about the stock market and investments. I’m also fascinated by the recent Ponzi schemes and financial scams that have been reported in the front page news. I’ve watched the bank meltdowns with great interest. As a former stockbroker, I’ve met a few embezzlers and worked with several bad brokers who’ve run away with client’s money.

My first venture into financial writing was “The Wall Street Calendar.” I received a 365 day calendar for Christmas several years ago; it was called “money saving tips.” It was awful! Each day I’d cringe with the new tidbit of information. Example: to save on toilet paper step on the roll. By flattening, you will save on paper use! At some point I said, “this is so bad, I could write a better one.” And sure enough, once I said that I had to go through with it. I started working on a smart Wall Street Calendar which if you are paying attention put to good use at the beginning of each chapter of The Bloody Mary Club. My Wall Street 365 day calendar caught the attention of the publisher of the most the most well regarded financial commentator at the time-- Lou Rukeyser.

After I completed the calendar, I took a screenwriting class for fun and was hooked. The fun stopped once my scripts started to get attention. When I was featured in Script Magazine, the editor, Shelly Mellott, liked my financial know-how so much she asked me to join her with the magazine as an owner. As you can tell, I’m an asset-focused gal, I put my money where my passion lies and became an owner. We were a great team. Script Magazine has since been sold to Final Draft. It was the most fun ever! I went to scriptwriting and film fests all over the United States. I met writers, producers, directors and agents. It opened doors for my writing and gave me amazing exposure. Over the years, I wrote five screen plays, several treatments, and articles for magazines. Two of my screenplays were option by HBO and an A list actress. I also collaborated with award winning director Uli Edel ( Baader Meinhof Complex, Tyson, Purgatory, Little Vampires) on a action movie called Closing In.

The best advice I received was from a top agent at CAA . He told me that if you wanted to be respected in Hollywood and control your work, you need to be novelist. Novelists are held in very high regard. Screenwriters are at the bottom of the barrel of the Hollywood pecking order and many aren’t even invited to their own opening night. I took his advice to heart. The Bloody Mary Club novel is based on my script.

I describe The Bloody Mary Club as a smart girl financial fiction. I won’t tell you how to get a man, buy fabulous heels or decorate a swanky condo, but I will use investing terms, mention stocks and weave a story about the ins and outs of a bank takeover. Although it’s fiction, it has real world relevance. I want to make the stock market and investing understandable and fun. I aim to increase the interest in Chick lit financial thrillers. In this era of bankruptcy’s, foreclosures and retirements in question, you need to know how to chart your own course. My characters in the investment club are women in their forties with no financial security and desperately rely on Gina Van Story to save them from a dead end retirement. All she demands is that the investment earrings stay put in the club until retirement age. This of course is a downer for them because Gina has all the toys and is about to enter the 1% club. They want to spend their club profits as soon they get them and Gina won’t allow it. It’s the classic battle of the ‘haves’ versus the ‘have not’s’.

Ladies! This is your wake up call to take get your financial house in order. Don’t wait for a rich prince to come and save you! Here’s a passage from The Bloody Mary Club, Page 28 where my lead character Gina gives her ladies a wakeup call for being lazy about their finances:

“You’ve all grown up thinking you can’t handle this stuff and if you’re a good girl, some big strong man will come along and take care of it for you. Wake up. It’s not going to happen. Without this club, you’ll be greeters at Wal-Mart when you’re seventy,” Gina plucked a shrimp from her drink and jiggled it at Vivi. “Your legal secretary job isn’t secure.”

Vivi picked imaginary lint off her slinky top.

“What happens when your on-man-shop lawyer is thrown in jail for tax evasion? You’re pushing fifty, who’s going to hire a legal secretary who types on an electric typewriter and uses shorthand?”

Vivi pouted.

Gina moved onto Sarah busy snacking on peanuts: “And you can’t stretch your paycheck. You’re floating your bills. If mommy and daddy didn’t help out, you’d have no phone service, electricity or water. What are you going to do when they aren’t around? You think you’ll inherit their money? Statistics aren’t on your side. Mom and the General will need that money for their nursing home care. Your ex will get the last laugh as he skis down the slopes in Zermatt after having a wine and raclette meal paid for from his impenetrable trust fund.”

Sarah picked at her cuticles with one eye stuck in a half blink. “You forgot Joanie, she’s a mess”

After reading The Bloody Mary Club, I hope that the reader will realize that financial thrillers are fun to read and you might even learn something about the stock market. Through my story you will see that even the fat cats top get ripped off and that there are no get rich quick shortcuts. In this era of self-directed IRA’s, everyone is responsible for their financial future and must make wise investment decisions. We all need to be savvy investors or else face a painful and dismal retirement. I make it clear through my characters that there are short cuts to make money or guarantees to double your return

I like it when readers tell me that they learned something from The Bloody Mary Club and that they also enjoyed the story. I’ve gotten a great response from readers that don’t normally follow the stock market or have an interest in anything concerning money. Readers have asked me to give them financial advice, to look over a proposed investment or even verify their trading strategies. In this day and age with retirement up in the air, it’s gratifying to have this kind of positive response. Through my writing, I want to make the stock market fun and understandable. I’m not looking to write the all encompassing story about Wall Street, I want to write about a tiny slice of Wall Street and stay within that framework. My next novel, Gina’s Tonic, focuses on day trading and money laundering. There’s going to be offshore money maneuvers, a day-trader who’s forced to trade for profit or else die and nasty drug dealers trying to launder truckloads of money. For sure, the gin and tonics will flow on this novel!!

Thank you for the opportunity to discuss my journey with you. I hope you enjoy reading The Bloody Mary Club and come away with an appreciation of all things financial! You can keep up with me by visiting my website: www.DebbieDyke.com,

Book Review/Giveaway(Amazon GC's)-Captain-Thomas Block-1/10/2013

Do you like an adventure packed (and in my opinion psychological) thriller that will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat from cover to cover? (A definite can’t put down until I finish book!) Well then I suggest you read Captain by Thomas Block. “Author Nelson DeMille says: “Captain is one of the best aviation/adventure thrillers you’ll ever read….and edge of your seat story of what happens when something goes horribly wrong when there is no room for wrong.” And according to an email that I received—Stephen King also loves this book!!

I don’t want to spoil this book for you so I will just write what is on the back cover!!

Thomas Block has created “Captain”—his most ambitious, intricate and action-packed aviation tale yet. It is a chilling and all-to-real story about a routine Trans-Atlantic airline flight that suddenly turns absolutely insane. In the doomed airliner’s cockpit, inside the passenger cabin and on the ground, a complex array of characters have been propelled at jet speed into a sudden and frantic race for survival. “Captain” is about the individual and collective struggles of each of these men and women as they attempt to deal with and ultimately fight against the odds and circumstances that are stacked against them.

You can find out more about this amazing author and his books at his website http://flyingb-ranch.net/thomasblocknovels/ (he also runs a horse hotel!!)

Book Review/Giveaway (Basket & sub) - The Bloody Mary Club - Debbie Dyke-11/29

According to the Acknowledgements this was originally written as a screen play for a TV series—but never quite made it—at least, according to Debbie Dyke, she got a mink coat out of it! Now I certainly do not like that it was real mink (and I had a dog who actually attacked people wearing real fur coats!!) but at least Debbie Dyke got PAID for all the craziness she was put through.

First off let me say I really enjoyed reading this book! It was not the easiest to follow-corruption and greed all over the place. Well, what do you expect—stockbrokers and bankers! And lots of drinking—specially made Bloody Mary’s for all 4 of the club members. Even some belly dancing from the character you would least expect. Danger and near death scenes—of course!! A dastardly cold blooded handsome man who thinks he can outsmart women? Of course!!

I don’t want to spoil this for you so that is all I am going to say--------but here is the recipe for the Bloody Mary from the book:

“Here’s a hot tip: After a grueling day of buying and selling stocks, I like to unwind with a made-to-order delicious bloody-well prepared drink. Since I am so particular about my Bloody Mary pick-me-up, I thought I’d share my recipe with you in the hope that if I ever visit, I will get the perfect Bloody Mary with minimal instruction. Enjoy! Gina Van Story
