I Wish For You a Sandpiper

Thursday, October 27, 2011

A very dear friend sent me this and I would like to share with all of you

The Sandpiper
by Robert Peterson

She was six years old when I first met her, on the beach near where I live.
I drive to this beach, a distance of three or four miles, whenever the world begins to close in on me.
She was building a sand castle or something
and looked up, her eyes as blue as the sea.

"Hello," she said.
I answered with a nod, not really in the mood to bother with a small child.

"I'm building," she said.
"I see that. What is it?" I asked, not really caring.

"Oh, I don't know, I just like the feel of sand."
That sounds good, I thought, and slipped off my shoes.

A sandpiper glided by.

"That's a joy," the child said.

"It's a what?"
"It's a joy. My mama says sandpipers come to bring us joy."

The bird went gliding down the beach. Good-bye joy, I muttered to myself, hello pain, and turned to walk on. I was depressed, my life seemed completely out of balance.
What's your name?" She wouldn't give up.
Robert," I answered. "I'm Robert Peterson."
"Mine's Wendy... I'm six."
"Hi Wendy."

She giggled. "You're funny," she said.

In spite of my gloom, I laughed too and walked on.

Her musical giggle followed me.

"Come again, Mr. P," she called. "We'll have another happy day."

The next few days consisted of a group of unruly Boy Scouts, PTA meetings, and an ailing mother. The sun was shining one morning as I took my hands out of the dishwater.
'I need a sandpiper,' I said to myself,
gathering up my coat.
The ever-changing balm of the seashore awaited me. The breeze was chilly but I strode along, trying to recapture the serenity I needed.

"Hello, Mr. P," she said. "Do you want to play?"
"What did you have in mind?" I asked, with a twinge of annoyance.

"I don't know. You can say."

"How about charades?" I asked sarcastically.
The tinkling laughter burst forth again.
"I don't know what that is.."
"Then let's just walk."

Looking at her, I noticed the delicate fairness of her face.
"Where do you live?" I asked.

"Over there." She pointed toward a row of summer cottages. Strange, I thought, in winter.
"Where do you go to school?"

"I don't go to school. Mommy says we're on vacation"
She chattered little girl talk as we strolled up the beach, but my mind was on other things. When I left for home, Wendy said it had been a happy day.
Feeling surprisingly better, I smiled at her and agreed.
Three weeks later, I rushed to my beach in a state of near panic. I was in no mood to even greet Wendy. I thought I saw her mother on the porch and felt like demanding she keep her child at home.
"Look, if you don't mind," I said crossly when Wendy caught up with me, "I'd rather be alone today." She seemed unusually pale and out of breath.

"Why?" she asked..

I turned to her and shouted, "Because my mother died!" and thought, my God, why was I saying this to a little child?

"Oh," she said quietly, "then this is a bad day."

"Yes," I said, "and yesterday and the day before and -- oh, go away!!"

"Did it hurt?" she inquired.
"Did what hurt?" I was exasperated with her, and with myself.
"When she died?"

"Of course it hurt!" I snapped, misunderstanding,
wrapped up in myself. I strode off..

A month or so after that, when I next went to the beach, she wasn't there..
Feeling guilty, ashamed, and admitting to myself I missed her, I went up to the cottage after my walk and knocked at the door. A drawn looking
young woman with honey-colored hair opened the door.
"Hello," I said, "I'm Robert Peterson. I missed your little girl today and wondered where she was.."

"Oh yes, Mr. Peterson, please come in.
Wendy spoke of you so much..
I'm afraid I allowed her to bother you. If she was a nuisance, please, accept my apologies."

"Not at all -- she's a delightful child." I said, suddenly realizing that I really meant what I had just said.

"Wendy died last week, Mr. Peterson. She had leukemia. Maybe she didn't tell you."

Struck dumb, I groped for a chair.
I had to catch my breath.

"She loved this beach, so when she asked to come,
we couldn't say no.
She seemed so much better here and had a lot of what she called happy days.
But the last few weeks, she declined rapidly..."
Her voice faltered, "She left something for you, if only I can find it. Could you wait a moment while I look?"

I nodded stupidly, my mind racing for something to say to this lovely young woman. She handed me a smeared envelope with "MR. P" printed in bold childish letters. Inside was a drawing in bright crayon hues -- a yellow beach, a blue sea, and a brown bird. Underneath was carefully printed:

A SANDPIPER TO BRING YOU JOY.

Tears welled up in my eyes, and a heart that had almost forgotten to love, opened wide. I took Wendy's mother in my arms.
"I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry," I uttered over and over, and we wept together.
The precious little picture is framed now and hangs in my study. Six words -- one for each year
of her life -- that speak to me of harmony, courage, and undemanding love.

A gift from a child with sea blue eyes and hair the color of sand
-- who taught me the gift of love.

NOTE: This is a true story sent out by Robert Peterson. It happened over 20 years ago and the incident changed his life forever. It serves as a reminder to all of us that we need to take time to enjoy living and life and each other.
Life is so complicated, the hustle and bustle of everyday traumas can make us lose focus about what is truly important or what is only a momentary setback or crisis.

This week, be sure to give your loved ones an extra hug, and by all means, take a moment... even if it is only ten seconds, to stop and pay attention.

This comes from someone's heart, and is read by many and now I share it with you..
May God Bless everyone who receives this!
There are NO coincidences!

Everything that happens to us happens for a reason.
Never brush aside anyone as insignificant.
Who knows what they can teach us?
I wish for you, a sandpiper.

How To Help Around The House (or not!!)

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Another one from Absolute Newsletter!!

How To Help Around The House

Philip was enjoying the second week of a two-week vacation the same way he had enjoyed the first week: by doing as little as possible.

He ignored his wife Paula’s not-so-subtle hints about completing certain jobs around the house, but Philip didn’t realize how much this bothered her until the clothes dryer refused to work, the iron shorted and the sewing machine motor burned out in the middle of a seam. The final straw came when she plugged in the vacuum cleaner and nothing happened.

Paula looked so stricken that he had to offer some consolation.

‘That’s OK, darling,’ Philip said. ‘You still have me.’

Paula looked up at him with tears in her eyes. ‘Yes, Philip,’ she wailed, ‘but you don’t work either.’

Baby Belly (this is absolutely adorable)

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

Absolute Newsletter strikes again!! This is really one of the better ones I've read--out of the mouths of babes!!

Baby Belly

A three year old walked over to a pregnant lady while waiting with his mother in the doctors office.

He inquisitively ask the lady, "Why is your stomach so big?"
She replied, "I'm having a baby."

With big eyes, he asked, "Is the baby in your stomach?"
She said, "He sure is."

Then the little boy, with a puzzled look, asked, "Is it a good baby?"
She said, "Oh, yes. It's a real good baby."

With an even more surprised and shocked look, he asked...
"Then why did you eat him?"

What Main Street Thinks about "Occupy Wall Street"

I saw this in the New Times the other day--A gentleman wrote in to the editor and it pretty much sums up what I have been thinking! I am not going to put the gentleman's name down only that he is from Wisconsin--

"To the Editor:

In “In Private, Wall St. Bankers Dismiss Protesters as Unsophisticated” (Business Day, Oct. 15), the views of “one longtime money manager” are summarized as follows:

“He added that he was disappointed that members of Congress from New York, especially Senator Charles E. Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, had not come out swinging for an industry that donates heavily to their campaigns. ‘They need to understand who their constituency is,’ he said.”

And that, ladies and gentlemen, tells you everything you need to know about why I, and so many other people on Main Street, strongly support the Occupy Wall Street movement.

We want our elected officials to belong to us, not to wealthy campaign donors. We want economic and regulatory policies to be determined by what’s good for the country, not by those who can spend the most obscene quantities of cash to buy the politicians and the media. "

I am not usually political--but what has been going on in this country is a disgrace!!

Senior Mind at Work

Sunday, October 16, 2011

Got this in an email from a friend--please feel free to share it and make someone smile today!

Senior Mind at Work

A lawyer and a senior citizen are sitting next to each
other on a long flight.

The lawyer is thinking that seniors are so dumb that
he could get one over on them easily.
So, the lawyer asks if the senior would like to play a
fun game.

The senior is tired and just wants to take a nap, so he
politely declines and tries to catch a few winks.
The lawyer persists, saying that the game is a lot
of fun...
"I ask you a question, and if you don't know the
answer, you pay me only $5.00.
Then you ask me one,and if I don't know the answer,
I will pay you $500.00," he says.

This catches the senior's attention and, to keep the
lawyer quiet, he agrees to play the game.
The lawyer asks the first question.
"What's the distance from the Earth to the Moon?"

The senior doesn't say a word, but reaches into his
pocket, pulls out a five-dollar bill, and hands it to
the lawyer.

Now, it's the senior's turn, He asks the lawyer,
"What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes
down with four?"

The lawyer uses his laptop to search all references he
can find on the Net.
He sends E-mails to all the smart friends he knows,
all to no avail...
After an hour of searching, he finally gives up.

He wakes the senior and hands him $500.00.
The senior pockets the $500.00 and goes right
back to sleep.

The lawyer is going nuts not knowing the answer.
He wakes the senior up and asks,
"Well, so what goes up a hill with three legs and
comes down with four?"

THINK before you run!! (really cute)

Monday, October 10, 2011

Got this from the Absolute Newsletter---it is cute!! Lesson to be learned here--think before you run!!

Two gas company servicemen, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban neighborhood. They parked their truck the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end. At the last house, a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter.

Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisor challenged his younger coworker to a foot race down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one.

As they came running up to the truck, they realized the lady from that last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong.

Gasping for breath, she replied, “When I see two men from the gas company running as hard as you two were, I figured I’d better run too!”

Campus Book Rentals and Operation Smile

Campus Book Rentals

Money is tight all over the world it seems these days. And those of you who have kids in college or you are in college already know that besides the room and board there are lots of other expenses—the largest by far BOOKS. Well, I may have a solution for you.

Did you know you could RENT your books? Yup—you read that correctly—you can rent that book at the beginning of the semester and return it at the end, after final exams. And there is a 15 to 30 day grace period just in case! Shipping is free both ways. And there is a 30 day money back guarantee in case you decide not to take that course or the professor decides to use a different book! If by chance you decide you really really want to keep the book—all you will have to pay is the difference between the rental and the retail cost. Not a bad deal. And all this from the company that has been around since 2007 and it’s name is:

We have officially teamed up with Operation Smile, an out of this world, awesome organization, that performs life changing cleft lip surgeries on children whose families could not otherwise afford it. The long term Improvement in quality of life for the children that receive these surgeries is almost incomprehensible. We have committed to donating enough to cover a minimum of 1,000 life changing surgeries. We hope To beat that number, but it's a significant commitment.

So for EVERY book rented starting now, we will donate a portion of those proceeds to Operation Smile with our sights set on meeting and exceeding our goal of 1,000 lives changed. So add that extra book to your cart, and consider this goal as you go back to school this year. Thank you for your support.
