Book Review (Children)-Joyful Trouble: Based on the True Story of a Dog Enlisted in the Royal Navy-Patricia Furstenberg

Monday, April 24, 2017

What an absolutely delightful and gentle book!! It is geared for children 6 - 10 but most adults would love this one too. Read the author's synopsis below--it says it all--better then I ever could.

"It is a story about the meaningful relationship between dogs and humans, but also between grandchildren and their grandfathers. It is a look at life through a child’s eyes, but also through those of a grandpa."

There is so much love that shines through every page!! This book should be in every school library!!

About the Book: (from the author's synopsis)

Joyful Trouble is based on the true story of the only dog enlisted in the Royal Navy during World War II (here, in South Africa). It gently depicts how this gentle giant had found his true calling - and not the one you would expect from a dog. Joyful Trouble, a Great Dane, arrives in Simon’s Town where the Royal Navy headquarters are and before you know it he is friends with every seaman. The whole town loves this friendly and helpful giant except for the Railway Authorities because Joyful Trouble often rides the train without a ticket. You can chase a dog out of a train, but you can’t take the love of travel out of the dog - if help is not offered soon, the Railway Authorities will put the dog to sleep. Told from a witness perspective, now a loving and much loved grandfather to girl and a boy, the story has a surprising ending. It is a story about the meaningful relationship between dogs and humans, but also between grandchildren and their grandfathers. It is a look at life through a child’s eyes, but also through those of a grandpa.

About the Author: (from Author's Website)

Patricia Furstenberg came to writing though reading, her passion for books being something she inherited from her parents.

Patricia Furstenberg won two key legs (chapter six, “Someone is Missing” and chapter nine, “Reconstruction of the Crime”) of the Write Your Own Christie Competition and was runner-up for chapter four. The Judges “were impressed by her thorough investigation and admired the strength of her narrative; they were impressed by her style” and congratulated Patricia on winning the penultimate chapter. “This was perhaps one of the hardest rounds of the competition and the judges felt that Patricia’s chapter was confident and intriguing.” The judges thought Patricia’s writing style is “well structured, with a great sense of tension and suspense.”

The Judges were Mathew Prichard, Agatha Christie‘s grandchild involved in publishing and promoting her books since 1960s, David Brawn, Agatha Christie’s Publisher at Harper Collins UK for the last 20 years and Daniel Mallory who works primarily with thrillers and crime fiction at Harper Collins US.

When she’s not writing Patricia likes to read, read, read, drink coffee and listen to music.
One of the characters portrayed in her children stories is Pete, the yellow toy elephant. Not many know, but Pete exists and lives in Pat’s home.

I love that "you can't take the love of travel from a dog." My grandchilren would love this and I would enjoy it as well. We often read together. I like that it is based on a true story. I can use this to explain the differences between Fiction, Nonfiction and based on a true story. Easy, fun reads are good for the soul.
