US-based Literacy Programs that Promote Learning #3 #literacy

When this was written fighting Illiteracy was a priority in the US--I am hoping that this continues. Most of the programs I have written about have private sponsors as well as governmental ones--let us all hope and pray that that continues!!

US-based Literacy Programs that Promote Learning

One of the issues that the US government is trying to fight at present is illiteracy. It is because of the constant increase in the number of people affected by it. In fact, around 32,000,000 adults in the country are incapable of reading. This is actually 14% of the total population. Also, around 19% of those who graduated from high school can’t read.

Fortunately, there are also organizations that aim to help those who can’t read. The following are just some of those designed to beat illiteracy in the US:

1. National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) – This organization, which operates various whole-family programs, prioritizes on extending their help to families who need to learn. Their goal is to help families build their own networks when it comes to learning. It could be getting a GED credential, going after higher education, or grade-level reading.

It started its outreach to millions of family since 1991. In fact, from the time it was established up to now, the organization was already able to help over two million families living in over one hundred communities in the US. Their concept is to focus more on family, so they can learn and serve together. The final goal is to not only increase the level of literacy in the country, but also to improve communities.

2. KIPP – Short for the actual name “Knowledge is Power Program”, KIPP aims to offer help to all aspiring students who wish to get enrolled and reach college. KIPP actually comes with a network composed of over a hundred free schools that are open to enrollment. This means that aspiring students have the chance to enroll even if they don’t have any academic achievement.

The organization also works efficiently in training and developing outstanding educators who will lead the schools that are part of their network. They also offer resources and tools, facilitate the process of exchanging ideas and insights and promote innovation. This makes their organization more effective in increasing the literacy rate in the country.

3. Colorin Colorado – It refers to a bilingual website, which main goal is to offer activities, advice and information designed to help children learn to become successful at school and to read. It was founded by the project developed by Reading Rockets.

When visiting the site, expect it to provide you with practical information designed for parents who speak Spanish, video clips showing celebrities, wonderful illustrations, as well as activities designed to improve one’s skills. The site really focuses on encouraging learning, making it ideal for kids who would really like to learn.

US is home to a number of organizations for those who are illiterate. With all these organizations promoting literacy, fighting this problem in the US, which affects mostly children, is possible.

Thanks for sharing. We as a family are readers. My oldest granddaughter loves to read & we listen to her read as well as reading to her two younger siblings. It saddens me to know that illiteracy is still a problem.

My mother and grandmother instilled a love of reading in me at a very early age. I'm glad there is a program to help people who are struggling with literacy.

It's awful that there is such a high incidence of illiteracy in the U.S. ~ so happy there are groups out there striving to right this problem. Being able to read is a necessity in finding decent jobs, being able read menus at restaurants, & enjoying a good book.

Showing children reading is the most important thing is so crucial.

Those sound like fantastic organizations. Nobody should have to go through life without knowing how to read fairly fluently.

Such a joy to hear about these programs, especially with our government cutting all funding for education.
