Book Review-The Haunting of Wolfe Haven-Debbie A. Heaton

Thursday, July 31, 2014

This book had me on my toes! I really couldn't figure out who the "Beta" was and truthfully would never have guessed. It combines mystery, paranormal and some romance in a way I've never read before-but I sincerely loved it. I know you will too!! The about the book will tell you enough without me trying to not give anything away!! A definite 5 in my opinion--maybe higher!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

"Riley Russell is gorgeous, smart, and successful. She also has a broken heart she’s managed to keep secret from everyone—including herself. Three years ago, she walked away from her marriage to entrepreneur Tristan Russell, believing there was no hope for the relationship. But when he reenters her life unexpectedly, Riley must fight to remain independent and in control of the life she has built.

Tristan, as handsome and accomplished as ever, is planning to get remarried, but first he must divorce Riley. To save her broken heart, Riley must confront her feelings for Tristan, his family, and his haunted ancestral house, Wolfe Haven. Along the way, she must navigate a minefield of secrets and mysteries, including arson, betrayal, and murder.
As Riley and Tristan try to find love with each other a second time around, they come to grips with things that go bump in the night. If Riley isn’t careful, she may fall prey to enemies that are closer than she thinks."

Book Review-Big Pharma Big Agri Big Conspiracy: A New World Order Spin on Drugs and GMOs-Dina Rae

Do you like reading about various conspiracy theories? Are you well versed in what is good for you to eat and what isn't? Do you know why at one time butter was no good for you--but now margarine is no good? Eggs are another one that has gone back and forth.

I have personally never trusted the FDA (Food & Drug Administration)-they have changed their tune once too often over my life time. At this point if they say something is bad for you I assume rightly or wrongly it is NOT bad for you and they will reverse their "findings" in a couple of years.

What I didn't know was how Big Pharma companies and Big Agri companies get involved in all this--somehow I am not surprised--

If you are interested in what goes into your bodies and the bodies of your families you really should read this book-it is relatively short but with so many references it may make your head spin. Take what you read with a grain of salt--but do your own research-so very much in here is true!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Ever wonder why the world's food supply is controlled by a handful of people? Or wonder why American pharmaceuticals are so expensive? Curious about GMOs or black label warnings? This book is an ode to those who suspect something sinister about the quasi-monopolies of the world's food and drug corporations. Is this another layer to New World Order advancement? Big Pharma, Big Agri, Big Conspiracy is a collection of legitimate research that might make you think twice about crackpot conspiracies.

Amazon/PP-2 Winners-WW-Whole Latte Love-Rachelle Ayala-Ends 8/3

Monday, July 28, 2014

I have read many of Rachel Ayala's novels and there has yet to be one that I have not simply loved. She will have you laughing, gasping, sometimes even have you shaking your head at how you can actually picture things happening in real life.

The world of investment banking-especially in NYC or other large cities like in California, is cut throat and that is putting it mildly. Carina, an Oriental young girl brought up in a strict home has only one thing in mind--to keep her sights on the job. She has never had any boyfriends because her parents always instilled in her the need to succeed first in school-now in her chosen profession. She managed to snag an internship at a prestigious firm where she hopes they will want to hire her permanently. When she asks an old friend if she knows where she can rent--things start to get interesting!

She moves in with a sexy barista and lays down the rules--in writing--which he agrees to--somewhat. Heavens Carina loves rules and even more so when they are in writing AND signed!! At work she has some trouble just because she is female------when her female boss says she will help her if Carina when asked to jump will say how high---darn-I refuse to give away this story--

Her sexy barista friend has a hidden past of his own-----he is not exactly the free wheeling rock star he appears--well he is--but---

Okay--it is a five--read it--you will love it!! It is one of those new genre Young Adult--I found nothing offensive what so ever-but I leave that to your discretion as to whether you want your teen to read this or not.

Investment banking intern Carina Chen doesn’t need any distractions—especially the sexy, guitar-playing barista she rooms with for the summer.

Free spirit Dylan Jewell appreciates the delightful universe of women who vie for his attention. His goal in life is to do good, make happy coffee, and help the homeless.

When Carina moves in, she insists on rules of conduct to quell her instant attraction to Dylan. But when her boss asks her to turn Dylan into a businessman, she can’t think of a reason not to take advantage of his hospitality.

Their chemistry is white hot, but Dylan refuses to play Carina’s game, unable to understand how he can fall in love with a woman who puts profits in front of people. When Carina realizes Dylan isn’t budging, she risks all to gain a single night with him. Will her gambit backfire or will Dylan discover Carina’s true heart before she runs away with his?

Set in Berkeley, California, Whole Latte Love is an opposites-attract romance mixing bluesy rock music, hot, steamy love scenes, and financial shenanigans.

Steamy love scenes and language. Suitable for readers 18+.

Dealing with ADHD? Here are Some Great Activities to Try

Saturday, July 26, 2014

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is diagnosed in approximately 10 percent of school-age children. Boys are about three times more likely to be diagnosed than girls, but the reasoning for this is not yet understood. Kids with ADHD are hyperactive, act without thinking, and have a really hard time focusing. So, why are some parents so bothered and others seem to have a good handle on it (or at least don't complain about it)? It is likely that the parents who have the easiest time dealing with a hyperactive child are promoting activities that allow them to burn energy, boost confidence, and improve concentration. Below are some activities you might want to suggest your child try.

Swimming - Did you know that Olympic Gold-Medalist Michael Phelps was diagnosed at 9 years old? There is little downtime with swimming. The constant movement burns energy, but focusing on the end of the race or counting laps trains their brain to pay attention, too. Swimming requires a lot of self-discipline, which is ideal for a diagnosed child.

Sports - Team sports are great for a child to participate in, whether they have ADHD, or not. Encourage them to try a few different sports to see which ones they like the best. It is ideal for them to be active in more than one. If they only play softball, they may soon lose interest after they get good. However, if they play softball, soccer, and hockey, then they constantly have to use different skills.

Running - Kids with ADHD tend to excel at running. Like swimming, running offers constant movement and burns a ton of energy. Map out different runs, so he can see how much ground he can cover in a certain amount of time. If you a runner, the two of you can do this together. This gives you the opportunity to go to different parks to keep things fresh and interesting with new surroundings.

Video Games - I know some of you just gasped, but hear me out! Obviously, you don't want your child doing nothing but playing video games in his spare time, especially because they don't burn many calories. However, video games do amazing things for the attention span, especially if you stick with problem solving or racing games. Get your child a bean bag chair to promote healthy posture and let him play for specified amount of time. There are some great bean bag chairs in a variety of sizes for kids of all ages which can be found online at stores like SoothingCompany.com

Book Review-Sleight of Paw (a Klepto Cat Mystery)-Patricia Fry

Friday, July 25, 2014

This is the third book in this delightful series. It can be read as a stand alone but I would suggest you read them all since each book mentions the others. To read reviews of the 1st 2 in the series click on the titles.

Catnapped (book 1)
Cat-Eye Witness (book 2)

Rags, the kleptomaniac cat (he really will steal anything within paws reach!) found a note in the wall that Michael was redoing as part of the renovation of the house. The note is retrieved but it is written in what they think is German. Turns out that a curse was put on this house years ago by some Gypsies. Meanwhile lots of action is taking place--none of it good. Rags has to dig up lots of evidence to get them out of all this. And meanwhile they find that the curse can be reversed---will they figure out the clue?

This series is easy reading but will definitely keep you entertained!! I am now eagerly awaiting the 4th book of this series!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Michael Ivey, the local veterinarian and Savannah’s new husband is attacked by an enraged client and then later accused of this man’s murder. The evidence quickly stacks up against Michael, until Rags, Savannah’s kleptomaniac cat, starts digging up clues implicating the unlikely suspect.

Coinciding with the details of this challenge is the discovery that the old house, which the couple purchased from Savannah’s aunt, is cursed. Is this why the couple has not been blessed with a child?

Savannah’s sister Brianna comes for a visit. She teams up with the Iveys’ vet tech, Bud, to discover how to break the gypsy spell and they fall hard for each other. Will their courtship be strengthened or weakened by a frightening carjacking incident?
Detective Craig Sledge is prominent in this story as the lead investigator in the murder case. As usual, he engages in some creative tactics to get the information and the confessions he’s after. He has also become embedded in Savannah’s friend, Iris’s family. He’s dating Iris and helping with her son, Damon’s rehabilitation in prison.

Review/Giveaway-Lola Granola Bars (Gluten Free and NON GMO)-US only-Ends 8/14 #EATLOLA

Thursday, July 24, 2014

I received 20 bars of Lola Granola Bars for review purposes. All opinions about this product remain my own!

Yes, I received all the bars you see up in the picture above (which was taken from the site) but without being in individual boxes. Not that I cared--less to recycle! And at the end of this review 1 lucky reader will be able to enter to win on the rafflecopter form exactly what I did. The prize will be shipped direct from Lola Granola Bar in Croton Falls, NY (they are practically my neighbors)

This is their story in their words:

"A few years ago our family hit hard times and we struggled to provide food for our four young children, so we sought help from public assistance and food banks. My husband Ernie was eating junk food to save money so I made him natural granola bars, making sure they were gluten and soy free due to my children's allergies. The kids loved the bars, so did Ernie, and so did his coworkers, who asked to buy some. Lola Granola Bar was born. Named for my 4 awesome children; Ruby, Lola, Ellie, Enzo, and my nephew, Nathan, each of our 5 flavors contain 8 core, all natural, non GMO ingredients.

Because we care, we share Lola Granola Bars with anti-hunger children's back pack programs.

Bee Gr8full Naturally-Mary, Mom and Founder"

"Lola Granola Bars, the only bar sweetened with just honey and, gluten free oats is expanding nationwide. The snack bars are packed with all natural proteins, fiber and omega 3's, are low in sodium and contain absolutely no GMOs. Lola Granola Bars ingredients are locally sourced including Massachusetts Cranberries, New Jersey Blueberries, New York Honey and Gluten Free Oats. Each of the 5 flavors contains 8 core, all natural, non GMO ingredients. Unlike many bars on the market, Lola Granola does not add any rice, wheat, corn or soy fillers, hydrogenated oils or refined sugar. All bars are gluten free, dairy free, soy free, and kosher. They taste great and kids love them in their backpacks."

If you visit their shop page here you can find out the ingredients in each bar along with the nutritional values. Just click under each bar where it says more details. And if you want to know what stores are selling this product click here

So, how did I like them? I tried and liked them all. I was left with a slight after taste but no worse then any other bar I have tried. I especially loved and appreciated that these are soft chewy bars filled with non GMO ingredients sourced near where they are made. My apartment is pretty hot this year so I refrigerated them immediately--they stayed soft!! There really were not many nuts to be found-maybe they are ground up? There is a video in the site where you can see how these are made.

My favorite? Hands down The Ruby. I am not a fan of whole nuts in bars-I am not allergic to them-just prefer them all crushed up!

I could taste the sweet cranberries and the honey in each bite I took. I will definitely be stopping by one of the stores that carry it in my area and picking up more. I think I finally found something that will get me to eat in the morning!

So what will you receive if you are the 1 lucky winner?

4 bars of The Lola (with almonds and cranberries)
4 bars of The Ruby (with cranberries)
4 bars of The Ellie (with cashews and dates)
4 bars of The Enzo (with cashews and almonds
4 bars of The Nathan (with blueberries and almonds)

Guest Post-The Life of a Writer-Christine Amsden (Author of the Cassie Scott series )

I asked Christine Amsden to give us her thoughts on what it is like to really be a writer-what does it take-here is her VERY HONEST answer to us all! Christine watches the comments so if you have an additional question please do not be afraid to ask it in the comment section below. She loves inter acting with her readers!

The Life of a Writer

So .... you want to be a writer? Are you a dreamer? A story teller? Do you simply love the way words feel when they come together to create a picture? Climb on the crazy train then, and get ready for a long, bumpy ride.

Besides being a writer, I'm also a writing coach. I'm exceptionally good at it for one reason that has come as a surprise to me: I'm honest. Now, I always knew I was honest; what I didn't realize was how rare this quality is, even in a coach. I tell the truth as I see it because only by reflecting both beauty and flaws can I inspire growth in a writer.

With that in mind, let me tell you the hard, cold truth about being a writer. It doesn't pay. The handful of bestsellers out there cluttering up the pop culture notion of what a writer is represent less than one tenth of one percent of traditionally published authors (I'm not even talking self pub here). If anyone has said, “Don't quit your day job,” they weren't trying to be mean. They were trying to be honest.

I didn't listen. :)

I quit my day job ten years ago when I got married, urged by my husband (who made enough for the both of us to live comfortably) to follow my dreams. I took the risk; one of the biggest of my life, and I have no regrets. Children came two years after marriage, filling my days with a combination of domestic and writerly activities that I found perfectly compatible. In a way, diluting my days with a wider variety of activities helped inspire me and make me more productive. I have written six complete novels in the eight-and-a-half years since my son was born (this doesn't include a couple of dead-end projects that were, nevertheless, learning experiences).

Creative work isn't like other types of work. It isn't linear. It isn't easy to quantify. Forty hours of creative work may be enough to write an entire novel draft (under extremely bizarre I-officially-hate-you circumstances), or it may only be enough to learn one important lesson before going back to the drawing board. An inspired writer can take a few stolen hours and create magic. An uninspired writer ... well, that's the problem with the ideal of the “full time writer,” aside from the paycheck thing. Sooner or later you run out of things to write *about*.

That's why I started coaching. It's also why I'm currently looking for creative new opportunities for part-time work. I've got a gig as a judge in a cooking competition coming up soon. Should be fun!

I know a lot of writers. Their stories are all different, their day jobs all unique, but one common theme rings true: We all long for the day when we can write full time, when our income from writing will support us in a comfortable middle-class lifestyle. I think knowing this story so well is one of the reasons why I'm a fan of TV talent shows like The Voice, America's Got Talent, and (most recently) Rising Star. The acts all come on and say the same thing – that they dream of getting paid to perform. To do what they love.

You don't want me to sing, but putting that aside, I understand. I really, really do.

And yet I understand one other thing, or at least, I am working towards understanding. (Self-actualization is more a journey than a destination.) I understand that I am a writer. Fame and fortune are not necessary for us to do what we love. We can do it just because we want to. Because, for whatever reason, these activities fulfill us.

One of the most common interview questions I get on tour is, “What advice would you give to aspiring writers?” I answer, “Only write if you love it.” The full answer is that if you're writing for fame, or fortune, or for any external force, it's not worth it. Writers write because the written word is our currency. It is an end in and of itself.

Between one thing and another, I lost track of that fact in the last year or two. I've taken the summer off from writing. I'm spending more time with my kids while they're still young (6 and 8), working on promoting my Cassie Scot series, and still doing a little coaching. Writing will call to me again, sooner or later. It always does. I've already started to feel the pull of a project that would take me in a completely different direction from anything I've done before. It may pan out. It may not. Luckily, as an independent author I can write whatever I like. No one owns my time or my creativity.

If you want to be a writer, then write. It never even has to be something someone else sees. (Kind of like me singing in the shower where no one else can hear. :) ) If and when it grows to the point where you would like to share it, come seek us authors out on the Internet and join our circles of madness. But if you can, even then, try to keep it in perspective. There is always the dream; we are dreamers by nature, but don't let the dream keep you from living your life now.

NuNaturals Chocolate Syrup-A Diabetic Chocoholics Dream Come True!

Saturday, July 19, 2014

I did receive product which facilitated this review-but I was not asked to do a review-I so loved the product I'm doing it anyway!

Yes, I freely admit that I am a chocoholic-the problem is I am also diabetic and I have to sneak my chocolate in tiny increments. Luckily I live alone or I would be in real trouble! I was already in love with NuNaturals Cherry Vanilla liquid--it tastes just like a cherry coke but without the sugar. I generally put it in plain water-but you could add seltzer if you still drink soda. I used to take 2 packets of whatever non sugar sweetener I had and throw it into my coffee--no more--only need one of NuNaturals packets. I also have an incredible sweet tooth and spaghetti sauce is just too bitter for me--add a dash of NuNatural to the sauce-Voila--a sweet spaghetti sauce! Thus, when I was asked if I would like to try some samples of the new products---well I guess you know what I said! They sent me all the different varieties of Stevia and a bottle of the CHOCOLATE SYRUP.

I am not a baker but I can see how this syrup could be used in a lot of recipes! As soon as I received it I grabbed the ice cream in my freezer and drizzled it (ok poured it over) then added some low fat whipped cream. Hum--this is dark chocolate--I like it sweeter so I added a couple of grains of the NuStevia Reb99--PERFECT. Then the next day I bought seltzer--I don't like soda but I love egg creams! 20 ounce Dunkin Donut cup that I had saved for reuse-added some almond milk-added the chocolate syrup plus some of the NuStevia (I am a fast learner!)--seltzer--PERFECT. Made another one the next day! Right now I am drinking Almond Milk with the chocolate syrup, some extra NuStevia and a tray of ice cubes--DELICIOUS!! (Please note-I have never in my memory actually measured anything-except once when my Mom forced me to measure the amount of real sugar I used to put in with my stuffed cabbage--that was the end of me adding sugar to stuffed cabbage-she drove me NUTS until I switched to Sweet n Low I think it was at the time. It seems I had been adding 4 cups of sugar-----and no, I was not diabetic at the time!)

And the best part is--I don't have to feel guilty!!

I did receive product which facilitated this review-but I was not asked to do a review-I so loved the product I'm doing it anyway!

Book Review-Children Of The Gods: The Talon Project-Darryl Olsen

Friday, July 18, 2014

I was asked to review this novella which introduces the series! WOW--did it ever leave you with a cliff hanger. Now I want to read the whole series just to see what happens.

An investigative reporter, Michael Cohen, is in the midst of getting a report delivered to the Times which will bring down several political figures when he is contacted by an old and dying retired CIA agent. He is curious about what this old timer knows and what "beans" he wants to spill before he dies so he goes to meet him. What he learns is that the government had been doing research into people from other planets with the help of a clairvoyant. He is skeptical-but goes to meet this person. The story he is told is hard for Michael to beleive but he tries to keep an open mind. He is told that he will be contacted and leaves for NY where he hopes to be able to make it up to his wife and daughter who are very angry at him for leaving. As he reaches his door--he is accosted by some men and told that he has to go with them--that was it--no more--I have to know what happens!!!!! In just 69 pages this author has me hooked!!

Game of Love GA-5 Winners-WW-Review Fated By Love-Melissa Foster-Ends 8/7

Thursday, July 17, 2014

Ok, I am a hopeless romantic, always have been and always probably will be. I just finished reading this book and feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Those Braden men really know how to woo a woman! Even one as shy as a librarian who is scared of almost anything that he loves.

Actually ever since Callie moved into the small town to take a job as an assistant librarian Wes had been stopping in every single Thursday to pick up the books she had picked out for him. She really was head over heels but saw all the other women gawking at him and felt she did not have a chance. Her 3 best friends from college told her they had planned a spa weekend for the four of them and Callie couldn't have been happier. UNTIL----she realized how they had duped her!

Wes, being the gentle soul that he is (underneath that large handsome exterior) falls for Callie but wants her to get over some of her fears as well. He has to save her from a runaway horse (she had never ridden before)--keep her from fainting (she was afraid of heights). He even gets her to go fishing (she is afraid of deep water).

OH-before I forget-Sweets. The adorable puppy that Wes found on the side of the road one day--a hound dog with no sense of smell. Wes loved that dog--and she followed him everywhere. Now, really, you tell me--how bad could a guy like that be? If only I could find a guy like that!!

This is truly a fairytale romance which will have even the most cynical of you sighing. Another 5 Stars Melissa!!

NEWLY RELEASED........

Book #8 The Bradens, Love in Bloom Series #16

FATED FOR LOVE is the second of six hot, wealthy, and wickedly naughty Braden cousins, and the newest additions to the BRADEN series by New York Times & USA Today bestselling and award-winning author Melissa Foster.

Librarian Callie Barnes has visions of reading and relaxing—and maybe having a few too many drinks—on her girls’ weekend away. Her hopes are crushed when her friends pull into a dude ranch instead of a spa, and she refuses to stay longer than one night. That is…until she realizes the ranch is owned by sinfully sexy, and dangerously rugged, Wes Braden—the subject of her late-night fantasies.

Fearless rancher Wes Braden thinks he’s the luckiest guy on the planet when the sweet, sexy librarian from his hometown shows up at his ranch. Their connection is white-hot, making it impossible for either to ignore their carnal desires. Wes is more than willing to convert sweet Callie from chick lit to a world of erotic romance, but Callie ties sex to love, and Wes avoids commitment like the plague.

Callie is thrust into physically demanding activities that ignite her deepest fears. Luckily, Wes is as tender as he is strong, and he’s there every step of the way to help her find her inner strength. With Callie’s influence, Wes might even discover that he’s been nursing a few fears of his own. Passion pulls Callie and Wes from their safe, comfortable lives into each other’s arms, and they’re about to find out just how alike they really are.

THE BRADEN COUSINS are the newest addition to the LOVE IN BLOOM series
