Diabetes – What Are Some Good Snacks

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

As any diabetic will tell you blood sugar is really hard to keep even semi stable—it goes up and down and the balancing act can really drive you crazy! I personally don’t really need too much to fill me up anymore which means I have to eat many times in a day—not much but something. I searched the internet to see what snacks would be safe for a diabetic to try when they need something—here are a few that I found. Some I knew about-some surprised me!

Cheese- I kind of knew about this before but here are 2 brands that also have low
Calories but if you have to watch your sodium intake—the sodium is high!
I love Munster Cheese and a slice or two usually does not affect my blood
sugar.
Mini BabyBell Light (hard cheese)
Laughing Cow Light (soft cheese)

Jell-O Mousse Pudding- I did not know about this one and you know I am going to give
this one a try (low calories/low sodium)

Fruits- Your best bet are berries!
Strawberries
Blueberries
Blackberries

Misc- Here are a bunch of other items you can snack on!
Yogurt Sticks
Veggie Chips or Straws
Dark Chocolate Squares (I prefer White or Milk-oh well)
Dr. Praeger’s little sweet potato pieces (I gotta try these!)
Whole Wheat Mini Pita Bread
Low Carb Tortillas
Yellow Corn Tortillas
Mini Filo Dough Shells
Mini Taco Shells
Oat Fit Oatmeal
Popcorn (air popped)

You can mix and match just watch the calorie content and the total carb content if you do
And always remember to take your blood sugar after trying something new; not everyone’s body will react the same way. Protein sources (Tuna, Roast Beef, Hamburger, Turkey, etc) can always be put (in moderation of course) into one of the bread sources listed above if you are trying to make a meal.

Always read the labels before you buy and when you combine to make sure you are not overdoing it!

Book Review - Grievous Bodily Harm - Jane Bennett Munro

Although Sexual harassment and intimidation have been outlawed in the US for many years now -that does not mean to say it does not still exist and happen!! To say that I was literally spitting nails at what was being depicted is well frankly an understatement!! Unless you have been harassed to leave a job or had a co-worker make sexual overtures (which I sincerely hope never happens to you) you are going to be shocked. This is, after all, just a novel--but an extremely well written one which will have you gasping, and admittedly even laughing a bit.

Other then Toni Day, a die hard pessimist whose character I ended up loving and admiring and who seemed to be constantly opening her mouth, getting in more and more trouble or ending up in a hospital bed herself--her mother, who had come for a visit was a bit of a comic relief. I mean really, as the entire world is going crazy and you finally say some words that maybe you shouldn't--there is good old Mom reminding you about your language! I also loved all the ancillary characters from the hospital staff. I have worked in hospitals and yes, they are hot beds of gossip. Toni's husband when up to his earlobes would throw his hands up in the air and scream out Oy Gevault--

Now that I have read this novel I can not wait to read others in the Toni Day Mystery series--I give this a 5 star rating and suggest you go get a copy for yourself (e-book or paperback)!!!!!

About the Book
: (from the back of the book)

When Marcus Manning is hired to ease the transition of Perrine Memorial Hospital from a privately-owned facility to part of a behemoth system that covers much of the Pacific Northwest, instead of doing his job, he begins to wreak havoc by lying, blackmailing, and threatening physicians and employees on his way to CEO of the entire hospital system. However, when he starts his campaign with pathologist Toni day, she blows the whistle om his wretched web of lies, blackmail, and sexual abuse.

While the hospital considers firing him, someone comes up with a more permanent solution...cyanide. As the prime suspect. Toni must begin a frantic quest to prove her innocence and solve the mystery of Marcus's murder. ut as she delves further and further into the private lives of Marcus's inner circle, Toni will be forced to kill in order to save herself and expose the truth.

This book can be purchased at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and at the author's website

About the Author: (in her own words from her official Toni Day Mysteries website)

Jane Bennett Munro, author of the Toni Day series, featuring medical mystery and mayhem, with just a touch of pathological humor.

I'm a pathologist in a rural hospital in Twin Falls, Idaho, trained in Southern California. I worked my way through medical school as a medical technologist. I came to Twin Falls right out of residency, and was in a solo practice for 24 years before my hospital was purchased by the other one; now I have three partners. I'm 68, divorced, semi-retired, and live in Twin Falls with my best friend, Rhonda, and our cat, Henrietta.

I'm not a forensic pathologist, or a medical examiner; but in Idaho, the coroner is an elected position, and usually not even a doctor. So whenever a case comes along that the coroner thinks needs an autopsy, local pathologists are called upon. During my years of solo practice, while the county hospital did coroner's cases for Twin Falls County, I did coroner's cases for the surrounding five counties. So even as a general hospital-based pathologist, I have gotten some forensic experience.

In the last 36 years, I've had some pretty interesting experiences and seen some pretty strange things. Some of them would make great stories.

They form the basis of what has become the Toni Day Mystery series.

Book Review - Deadly Passage - Lawrence W. Gold, M.D.

Sunday, July 28, 2013

Lawrence W. Gold, M.D. has done it again. This is the third book he has written that I have read; this one is every bit as good as the other two! Dr. Gold used his medical knowledge and his knowledge of sailing to bring us one of the most thrilling high seas adventure stories I personally have ever read. It starts out normally enough--a family, the Reiss family (Andy, Jesse, Rachel and their Dog) has been sailing around for about five years and have finally decided that maybe it is time to go live on dry land again. They set sail towards the Florida coast. Meanwhile 2 homegrown American terrorists are plotting to avenge their father's death--with the help of a Middle Eastern country. And a scientist in one of the Middle Eastern countries is out to avenge the death of his son.

As they are sailing they notice a boat adrift in the open ocean. Andy boards her and rescues two teen age Americans who are very close to death. Andy leaves a note on the boat and ultimately calls the US Coast Guard to let them know. Being a doctor (and his wife a nurse)-they revive the two young people only to discover that they have helped 2 terrorists. (ALWAYS listen to your dog-they really do know people best!). The doctor, who is also an infectious disease specialist realizes that the 2 young people have small pox, a disease that everyone thought had been erased from the face of the earth.

Meanwhile, back on dry land, both the Cubans and the Americans are trying to figure out what is going on and of course blaming each other and attempting not to let the other country know so as avert confrontation between the two countries. The political intrigue is totally believable (at least to me) and will have you shaking your head in wonder.

Then the worst happens--Hurricane Agnes--and I sometimes wondered as I read whether the boat would ever make it to land--thankfully, no help from politicos--it did. The Reiss' were put into isolation and a cure was sought.

The ending of this book still has me shivering and honestly slightly frightened--no I'm not giving this away--I will say that you should definitely read this book-I read it from cover to cover in one sitting!!

About the Book: (from the back of the book)

Danger at sea is not new to the Reiss family, and while the sea can be unpredictable, nobody could have foreseen what they'd face trying to get home.

After five years at sea, Andy, Jesse, and twelve year old Rachel decide to head back to Florida. While they've handled most of what nature could throw at them, now, they face the unexpected.

Off the coast of Cuba, they come upon a battered sailboat adrift. The two young Americans abaord, Ryan, and Nicole are near death. Andy, a physician and Jesse, a nurse, revive them only to discover that they've rescued two homegrown terrorists intent on infecting Miami with a deadly virus.

While Andy and his family struggle to get home, they now face multiple obstacles: the terrorists, the disease, the Cuban Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard, The Department of Homeland Security, the Oval Office, and Hurricane Agnes.

Deadly Passage reveals senseless terrorism for what it is. We experience nature's violence, cringe at mindless political intrigue, and celebrate a family's courage, and pray for them as they face impossible odds. The denouement is unexpected and chilling.

Book Review - Remembering America, Looking Back at the Last Innocent Age - Craig Daliessio

Saturday, July 27, 2013

Although this author grew up about 10 years after I did I could definitely remember many of the ways I remained innocent back then. I grew up in a small town which, back then tended to keep you innocent of most of the bad things that can and do happen in this country and this world. The author gives his memories of growing up in a close knit neighborhood where neighbors were friends and kids could be kids. Being a male a lot of what the author remembers is about sports. If I remember correctly most males in my generation were also always playing or thinking about some kind of sport. One thing for certain, we were all always outside playing with no fear. If you would like to take a walk down memory lane or to see how life used to be before parents were afraid to allow their children to play outside without fear late into the evening then this is certainly the book for you.

About the Book: (from the back of the book)

It's the place you'll always call home. The place you run to --if only in your memories-- when you've lost your way and your compass can't find True North" Where do you go when the wheels come off? When no place feels safe and you can't find a smiling face? When you've lost everything and you wonder if you'll ever get it back. Sometimes, you just need to go home.

About the Author:
(from Amazon)

Craig Daliessio is an author and speaker and a dad. Once a highly successful mortgage banker, Craig lost his home...and his career...when the industry collapsed in 2008. In the years that followed, he returned to college, earning his Bachelors in Religion from Liberty University, penning three books, and two blogs, and beginning his Seminary studies. All these achievements were commendable enough on their own...except Craig did this while living in his car. His fight to remain an active father in his daughter's life forced him to make the hard decision to remain in Nashville where he could find no work...but where he could be the devoted dad he has always been. The author of "Harry Kalas Saved My Life" and "A Ragamuffin Christmas" adds "Remembering America...Looking Back at the Last Innocent Age" to his list of critically acclaimed works. Craig's writing reflects his journey...full of Faith amidst doubt. Optimism amidst fear. Devotion to family and the deep desire to share his love of a well-crafted page that touches a heart and brings a tear or a smile...or both. He is a gifted speaker and amateur hockey player and loving father. A native Philadelphian who currently resides in Nashville, Craig's literary voice has been compared to Brennan Manning and Gene Hill.

Kindle Fire HD GA-Book Review-Dance for a Dead Princess–Deborah Hawkins-Ends 9/27

This is a fictional novel based around the death of Princess Diana with an intriguing what if scenario. It is also part mystery, part contemporary romance, set in a sometimes historical or sometimes a contemporary setting! It is the story of two people who have to overcome their pasts to truly appreciate their present and each other.

Did I like this book—you bet I did-even though I had to sit and read it at my computer! The twists and turns kept me interested and entranced as the past was revealed as well as the present! Anyone who appreciates a good Historical or Contemporary Romance with a mysterious plot will certainly want to read this book!

About the Book: (from PUYB)

Wall Street Attorney Taylor Collins, has something Nicholas Carey, the 18th Duke of Burnham, has been searching for since the death of the Princess of Wales: the videotape Diana made in January 1997 before her death in August, naming her assassins. Determined to avenge Diana’s death by exposing her killers, Nicholas lures Taylor to England with his promise to sell his ancestral home, Burnham Abbey, to one of her clients, a boarding school for American girls. But Nicholas, who has dated American actresses since the death of his beloved wife, ten years earlier and who has vowed never to fall in love again, is immediately overwhelmed with feelings for Taylor at their first meeting. Taylor, unaware that Diana’s tape is in the estate of Mari, her long-time friend and client, and nursing her hurt over her broken engagement to a fellow attorney in her firm, brands Nicholas supremely spoiled and selfish and is in a hurry to finish the sale of the Abbey and return to New York. But while working in the Abbey’s library, Taylor uncovers the Tudor-era love story of Thomas, the first duke and founder of the Carey family. As she reads Thomas’s agonizing struggle to save the love of his life and the mother of his child, she begins to see Nicholas in a new light as he battles to save his sixteen-year-old ward Lucy, who is desperately unhappy and addicted to cocaine. But just as Taylor’s own feelings for Nicholas become clear and at the moment she realizes she is in possession of Diana’s voice from the grave, she is confronted with evidence Nicholas may be responsible for a double murder. When Nicholas is arrested and taken to Wandsworth Prison, Taylor sets out to learn the truth once and for all about Nicholas Carey and the death of the Princess of Wales.

The Heat has Gotten to Me!!

Saturday, July 20, 2013

The heat wave we have had for it seems like forever has finally gotten to me-and my cat I might add-I can barely manage to keep my eyes open, and my brain feels like I am in a fog. I have no idea how I made it to clients this past week and kept up with posting-well more or less anyway. And somehow today I have to take my Mom shopping---this should be interesting---at least we will be going to the OutBack for Lunch since I really have not eaten anything much for about 3 days--yeah it's that hot. As a diabetic that is also kind of dangerous!!

One of my friends told me that diabetics dehydrate quicker--he was right. What he didn't tell me is that as you dehydrate your blood sugar goes higher (even if you haven't eaten!!) And just like when I originally had heat stroke-it seems almost impossible to rehydrate myself--I am drinking gallons of water a day--

As any blogger who does book reviews will tell you--for some reason all the books you agreed to review arrive at the same time--why this is-I don't know--all I know is I have about 8 books to read and review--HELP. Yes, I know I am a fast reader--but this heat has slowed my reading down I think. The thought of sitting here typing up reviews is not making me a happy camper at the moment. YES, I will get through this--but don't expect to see me on line too much for a couple of days-I'll be reading, reading, writing, writing--and I think I have some giveaways coming up soon which I have to prepare.

Poor Baby (my Cat), she just lies around not moving--unless I get up and leave the bedroom (where the a/c is and the fan-not that they help much)--she then follows me and plops down half in and half out of the bathroom (which is opposite my bedroom door) and watches me to make sure I am not leaving the house! The last time I walked back in here she actually started to close the door after me!!

Well--it is supposed to rain today-thunderstorm actually--and is supposed to cool off a bit--I'll believe it when I feel it!!

Book Review - Dreaming - Jill Barnett

Friday, July 19, 2013

I don't know how many of you have read any of Jill Barnett's books-I have read them all and love every single one of them!! I Know you know how I feel about reading on my computer-but when I saw that this book was on sale (not sure if it still is)-even though I had read it before--I could not resist, her books-all of them are that good.

Try and picture me laughing till tears ran down my eyes while sitting and reading on my computer--that's what Jill Barnett's books do to me and Dreaming was no exception! It is the usual story about a girl who loves a gentleman from afar-or so he fervently prays since every time she goes near him he is hurt in some way or another--and she really doesn't mean to do it. Then they are kidnapped by who they think are pirates and even the "pirates" are afraid to go near her!! And then of course there is her dog------and a witch and a warlock-------

About the book (from Amazon)

The Earl of Downe has come home to rusticate from his wild ways--spurred by his need to prove his father was right...that he is nothing but a worthless rake. But at a neighboring estate, Letty Hornsby believes dear Richard is her hero, her dream man, her heart's desire! She's been in love with him since childhood, since she was eleven and accidentally knocked him into a river, the first of several such disastrous encounters. Now that the earl's friends have convinced him to leave Town and recuperate from overindulgence (women, alcohol and gambling), Letty is taking advantage of the opportunity and spinning her own plan to save Richard from himself.

Richard expects his life to be boring and restful once he's home, but after a chance encounter with the meddlesome Letty and her obnoxious dog, Gus, he discovers there is no rest for the wicked. He soon finds himself captive aboard a smugglers' ship with an adoring young woman who is a walking catastrophe...and her enormous clod of a dog. Never missing a beat, she gets them into one hilarious predicament after another before Richard realizes that she might be the one woman who can save his black soul with a faith in him that is bright enough to burn the shadows from the darkest heart. If he can survive....

About the Author (from Amazon Biography in her own words)

I am a native Californian, a baby boomer who grew up in a very idyllic place at a very idyllic time--on the coast of Southern California in the 60's, although I spent many childhood summers before that on my grandparents' farm in Texas.

So I'm a West Coast girl raised by Southern parents, who grew up in a place where you spent your free time playing volleyball on the beach and weekends dancing to local bands like Beach Boys and the Righteous Brothers.

My husband and I met in high school, and I never knew I wanted to be a writer until I was in my thirties and back in college again. I had been an art major the first time around--it was the 60's--quit to make some kind of mark in the world, but I got married instead.

My love of history and reading and art all came together for me when I quit school again, after working toward my history degree and then becoming a mother--something we were told couldn't happen. (The child not the degree.) So with the miracle gift of my daughter, came a new career for me.

I knew then I wanted to write a book, had an idea and more importantly a vision of the kind of stories I wanted to tell. I told myself I could always go back to school.

Funny thing the way life works. Almost two years to the day I quit school, I sold my first book on 50 pages to Pocket Books, a division of Simon and Schuster. That was over 22 years ago and many books later.

So the road I traveled to become an author had many twists and turns, joys and disappointments. Yet I'm doing something I really love. In so many ways I'm a very lucky woman.

Bankruptcy-Can it be Avoided?

I have seen several articles lately on Bankruptcy. I agree, for Bankruptcy you do need a reputable lawyer but……

There are several options that you can try before you decide to declare bankruptcy or spending money on a lawyer only to find out you do not qualify.

1. Try consolidating your debt

This will involve 1 of 2 ways. Either contact a bank and see if they will give you a
large loan-enough to pay off all your consumer debt leaving you with one bill to
pay each month plus your mortgage. You just have to be absolutely certain that
you make enough money to cover this debt, your mortgage and still have enough
to purchase necessities.

2. Try calling the Credit Card companies

See if you can get them to lower the interest rate you are now being charged. Be
certain to pay a bit above the minimum due on each card each month. These days
credit card companies are quick to raise those rates back up.

3. Call a Credit Counseling or Debt Management company.

A reputable company of this type will go over all your income and expenses with
You to see if they will be able to help or if bankruptcy is the only solution. What
these companies will do is call the credit card companies and see if they can make
a deal. Most credit card companies will work with the Credit Counseling or Debt
Management companies because they feel that they stand a better chance of
getting their money. You will send the Credit Counseling/Debt Management
company a set amount each month plus a small fee. They will disburse the funds
to the individual companies. You probably will not hear from those credit card
companies who have accepted this again. BUT-if one of the cards you owe money
decides not to accept this type of arrangement-you will still have to pay them
separately.

Before you make any decisions always make sure you do some research. Make sure the company or Lawyer you are planning to contact and ultimately hire is trust worthy and reputable!

Book Review/1st Chapter Reveal-YA Novel-Untimed–Andy Gavin

Pump Up Your Book Presents Untimed Virtual Book Publicity Tour

This YA time travel novel will also be enjoyed by adults. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I would suggest that before you hand it over to your YA you read it-there are portions that you might not want your child reading depending on their sophistication level. I would have no trouble handing it over, but then, we are all different. Some of the scenes are a tiny bit risqué.

The story revolves around Charlie, a young boy who is being raised by his normal Mom and his mostly missing but when he is there his not so normal but loving father. Unfortunately Charlie takes after his father but is never told what this entails. He falls into (literally) a time hole and meets a young girl (with a baby) just like him—The Clockwork men are forever trying to do away with the duo but through trial and error Charlie and Yvaine prevail. Of course they do make a couple of mistakes and alter history—but they go back and try to rectify these errors. Good ol’ Dad and Aunt Sophie to the rescue—Thank heavens!!

First Chapter Reveal: Click here for Chapters 1 & 2

From the back of the book:

Charlie's the kind of boy that no one notices. Hell, his own mother can't remember his name. So when a mysterious clockwork man tries to kill him in modern day Philadelphia, and they tumble through a hole into 1725 London, Charlie realizes even the laws of time don't take him seriously. Still, this isn't all bad. Who needs school when you can learn about history first hand, like from Ben Franklin himself. And there's this girl... Yvaine... another time traveler. All good. Except for the rules: boys only travel into the past and girls only into the future. And the baggage: Yvaine's got a baby boy and more than her share of ex-boyfriends. Still, even if they screw up history - like accidentally let the founding father be killed - they can just time travel and fix it, right? But the future they return to is nothing like Charlie remembers. To set things right, he and his scrappy new girlfriend will have to race across the centuries, battling murderous machines from the future, jealous lovers, reluctant parents, and time itself.

Book Review - Traveling for Love - Becky Due

Having been in Amanda's shoes more times then I can count (other then the divorce) I could definitely feel for this character. Amanda has no real conception of why her relationships don't work out-until she finally comes to the realization that she has to like and enjoy her own company first and foremost. She allows the men to "take over" and just wallows in pity. When her husband divorces her Amanda is forced to start over. She moves in with a friend, gets a job and proceeds to live her life. She has always wanted to travel and the job she now has at the travel agency gives her the impetus to do just that. When her new boy friend, who was supposed to go on this trip with her cancels at the last second--Amanda goes by herself. She meets other men the more she travels, each one a little better then the last--will she finally meet Mr. Right? Well, sorry about this--but you will just have to read this book to find out!! Yes, I did enjoy this book and think you will as well.

Book Review/1st Chapter Reveal-Improper Conduct-Isabel Roman (ADULT)

Monday, July 15, 2013

Now most of us are aware that office romances are taboo--well at least they are supposed to be! As a Police Detective that rule is really enforced most times--and when it is your Captain--well both of you can lose you jobs in a New York minute so you have to be extra careful!! And actually when you think about it--how in the world can you stand seeing someone you like in danger which is the usual state of affairs in a police department. This is the situation Detective Jules Marshall and Captain Callum Archer find themselves. When things start to heat up drastically and Jules goes under cover pretending to like a psychotic killer who she knew from her previous position with the San Francisco PD but was never able to get a conviction much less anything on this guy--Callum is at his protective best-even knowing that he should not try to stop her--that's it folks--you will just have to read this book to fill in the blanks!! This is, in my opinion, an ADULT book.

THIS BOOK CAN BE PURCHASED AT AMAZON

About the Book (from the Authors Website)

One month on the job--that was all Detective Jules Marshall had with the LAPD but already she knew two things:

1. Her move from San Francisco was the best move she’d ever made. 2. Sleeping with her sexy as hell boss would be a big mistake. That didn’t stop her from wanting him or from acknowledging the same spark of need in his eyes. And Captain Callum Archer had eyes that devoured her.

But when a trio of bank robbers picks LA as their target, her attraction to Callum takes a back seat. She’s seen this pattern before and confides in Callum her suspicions. She thought the case had gone cold until it heated in spectacular fashion; the bank robbers who blew up a car inside a building and killed at least five people have similar crimes back in San Francisco. The problem? She has no proof to go with her suspicions.

Despite Callum’s objections, and the increasing temptation to give into her incredibly improper feelings for her captain, Jules plans to push ahead with an extremely unorthodox plan--date the killer.

Callum isn’t happy. Jules is the one woman he’d break all the rules for and he’s more than willing to do so to keep her in his life. When she puts herself in the crosshairs of a psychotic killer, there isn’t anything he won’t do to protect her.

But can he keep her safe and still catch the killer? Or will their improper relationship get in the way of their jobs?

This book can be purchased at Amazon

FIRST CHAPTER (Please note I had trouble trying to format correctly-the formatting errors are mine!!)

Chapter One

Detective Jules Marshall needed to be pried out of her desk chair with a really big
crowbar. Somehow, through sheer force of will, she managed to wake up her leg muscles and
The sunlight streamed through the large office windows and beckoned her. With a sigh
of relief, she stepped into the pool of light, feeling as if she'd just been rescued from the mole
people. What she needed was a day at the beach with an ice cold piña colada.
What she had was four nights of surveillance, followed by a morning spent like the
hunchback over her computer. How did people spend all day on their computers?
What do they think? We’re trained monkeys? Probably.
And who were they? The ubiquitous they of course. And ubiquitous? Where did that
word come from? Jules shook her head to stop that line of thinking. I can do this all day.
She’d been in LA for only a month now and hadn’t quite become used to all the little
differences between her new home and San Francisco. One thing was for sure, the sun always
seemed to shine here, and she could feel the warmth on her face despite the high-tech windows of the new police building.
She liked this building; the high-tech, science fiction aspect didn’t stop with the
windows, but extended throughout. George Orwell’s nightmare; Big Brother’s dream. The latest
monitors and electronics sat on every desk and the open floor plan ensured every officer felt the
light from the sun. They even had a new fancy-schmancy coffeemaker.
One day, Jules knew it’d turn them all into soulless minions of the coffee company. Then
again, it was probably already too late.
It even smelled new, clean.
Plus, she’d been told this building was far more secure—earthquake wise—than the old
building, which she could see from her window. Iris Santiago, her new partner, had promised to
take her on a tour of the death trap, but so far they hadn’t had the chance. Her second day on the
job they’d been thrown into a car-jacking smuggling ring. Jules barely had the chance to unpack;
it felt like all she’d done was work since.

Jules liked Iris. They got on more than fine, and immediately warmed up to each other
through their shared sense of sarcasm. Bonding through sarcasm, not many people could say that.
She rolled her shoulders and mentally went over the smuggling report she’d just finished.
Her former partner, Paul Schmidt, had teased her about her obsessive rereading of her reports,
but he was just as meticulous as she. One of the many reasons they’d had such a good
partnership, and making him one of the few people she’d miss in San Francisco.
Speaking of her former home, Jules wondered if she’d misread Harrison Bowen. The city
sped with life below her, and she watched them walk, run, bicycle, or drive by her window as the
sun started to set. Late afternoon already and, with luck, her first real free night since arriving.
Bowen, however, bothered her. Maybe she had misread him, his interest in her, her own
feminine wiles. Those wealthy businessmen were always so fickle. She had, however, expected
him to come down from Frisco and do the oh so convenient I didn’t expect to run into you here
line. Even though she’d made it clear LA was to be her new home. Maybe she’d blown her
chance there and whatever come-on Bowen had shown hadn’t really been there at all.
Maybe it was for the best. She didn’t necessarily need a complication like Bowen.

“Conrad!” Captain Callum Archer’s voice cut through the Major Crimes Unit and
Jules stopped herself from turning to look, but only just. She couldn’t however, stop the
bolt of arousal. What the hell was wrong with her? She had no business being attracted to her
new captain, no business enjoying the little time they’d spent together. She’d never found herself
attracted to any co-worker, but something about Archer had wormed beneath her skin and stayed.
And she definitely didn’t need that complication in her life. Though there were moments
she caught the interest in his dark brown eyes, a heated flash there and gone.
She couldn’t ignore the eye candy. Pure delectableness there! From his dark eyes and
hair to his perpetual scruff, she did so love a man with scruff. He’d welcomed her warmly to the
department, which should have been a sign right there—were captains ever really warm? But she couldn't think about that now.
Talk about sticky; a relationship between them would be sticker than a cinnamon bun.
And, she was willing to bet, just as delicious.
And stupid, she reminded herself as she turned back for her desk. Very, very stupid to get
involved with her superior officer.

“Free at last,” Iris said, arms stretched high over her head. “The slaves have been freed from purgatory.
“Aren’t you mixing your metaphors?” Jules asked, sliding back into her seat.
One perfectly plucked copper eyebrow raised and her brown eyes narrowed slightly. Iris
tossed her head, red ponytail swishing sideways. “My metaphors were bored,” she claimed.
Jules chuckled and tapped her keyboard to move to the top of her report. She couldn’t
think of anything else to add and sent it off as-is. Her brain started to shut down, it usually did
after wrapping up a major case, and she really wanted to get out of the office and home.
“Don’t forget,” Iris said as she stood and grabbed her keys. “My place tomorrow for the
famous Santiago Chicken Dinner Night.” She flicked off her monitor and looked up at her friend.
Iris leaned over the desk and lowered her voice just enough to catch Jules’s attention.
“I’m considering inviting the captain,” Iris added.

Damn. Could she sit through an entire dinner without drooling over Archer and
embarrassing herself? Then again, she could always claim it was the chicken. Carlos, Iris’s husband made kick-ass chicken.
“Sounds like a great evening,” she said. Her voice remained even and only the slightest
bit interested. Proud of that she pushed her luck. “Inviting anyone else?”
Was that a hint of breathlessness there? No, probably her imagination. She didn’t do
breathless. Over anyone. Ever. Until, apparently, Callum Archer. Damn.
“Nope.” Iris shook her head, a mischievous gleam in her deep brown eyes. Her voice
dropped a bit more, not enough to arouse suspicion with the rest of the floor but enough to have
Jules braced for whatever came next.
“I’m trying to hook you two up,” Iris said matter-of-factly. “Why would I invite anyone else?"
Jules tried not to choke, but her sharp intake of air managed to lodge itself in her throat
and she gasped. “What?” No breathlessness there, but not exactly a voice filled with scoffing conviction.
“You do realize,” Jules said, voice a low hiss of air, “that’s against like two-billion regs?”
She was in deep if Iris noticed her interest in Archer. Hell, had the entire department
noticed? She’d been so careful. Damn it, she wasn’t a school girl with a crush on her teacher.
Granted, this attraction to Archer wasn’t exactly a crush, but it counted the same in her mind.
Even if the things she wanted to do with him were hardly schoolish. Unless adult school counted.
And here she’d been so damned careful not to let it show, not to be obvious.
“No,” Iris assured her with another wink Jules only now realized did not bode well. “Two
billion? Pft, only like one. And what’s a billion regs between friends?”
“Iris,” Jules said, careful to articulate every syllable. “Put that out of your head; there’s no way that's happening."
“Oh, come on, Jules,” Iris said, her smile not diminishing one bit. “I know you like to live
on the edge. Besides, no one would know. I’m not telling.”
“That isn’t the point,” Jules managed. She shook her head, a hundred arguments racing
through her mind to put a stop, permanently, to Iris’s line of thinking.
“Santiago. Marshall—you’re with me.” Archer’s strong voice immediately silenced the
room. Jules’s head snapped up and she wondered if he’d heard her conversation with Iris. Damn,
maybe Big Brother really did have ears everywhere.
Archer continued, thankfully oblivious to their conversation. “Conrad, Morgan—get
Mobile Command down to First National’s main branch. Hostage situation.”
Grabbing her gun, Jules followed Iris out of the room, Archer behind them. He moved
fast and silent, walking with long strides beside her. Unable to resist a glance up, Jules indulged.
“Dumb kids in Halloween masks?” she asked. “Or drug addicts?”
Archer glanced down at her, and no—she hadn’t mistaken that flash of heat in his eyes.
The brown of them, so deep she felt she could sink into him, caught her gaze and held. Now
certainly wasn’t the time for thoughts like those.
“I don’t think so,” he said, plucking the keys from Iris’s hand. “Not from the reports.”
Archer drove, relegating Iris to the back seat. Iris grumbled but climbed into the back, a
knowing look in her eyes when she winked at Jules.

It didn’t take long to drive to First National where Mobile Command waited for them and
several patrol cars cordoned off the immediate area. Jules climbed out of the car, slamming the
door closed behind her. From her position she couldn’t see inside the bank; the setting sun cast
long shadows over everything and blocked her view.
Archer snapped orders, listened to the on-scene patrolman, and ordered a wider
perimeter. Jules looked to Mobile Command as she listened to the end of the patrolman’s report.
Whoever had taken the hostages hadn’t made any demands yet, and she wondered if they waited
for Major Crimes to arrive or something else.
“Keep the press away,” Archer said to the patrolman, Richardson by his nametag. “I
don’t want any intrepid reporter getting in our way.”
Richardson moved off to do as ordered and Jules looked again to the long glass windows
of the bank. Beside her, Iris turned to look down the street and Jules wondered what she searched
for. On her other side, Archer rolled his shoulders as if trying to loosen them up.
Granted, she’d worked with him for a month, and then only with Iris during the car
smuggling case. But she knew that movement.
“I’ve got a bad feeling,” Archer said quietly, looking down at her.
Jules met his gaze and nodded in agreement. Archer held her gaze for one more moment
before heading to Mobile Command. Iris had already moved off to push back the civilians and
widen the perimeter, and Jules went to do the same on her side of the street. Doubt nagged the
back of her mind, and it was only when she started back for Mobile Command that she realized what her doubts were.
They could be scared idiots in the bank, a simple robbery that went wrong and now the
robbers drowned in their wrong choices. Or Archer’s bad feeling could have merit. She’d bet on the last.
Before she made it to Command, the bank doors opened.

She still couldn’t see into the bank itself and wondered if whoever had planned this had
made sure the sun worked to his advantage. Made sure they did the job in the afternoon with the summer sun shadowing the bank.
A man, a terrified look frozen on his face visible from even where she stood, walked
slowly and stiffly out of the bank. He raised his hands, visibly shaking as he stepped further and
further from the still-open bank doors. Sweat stained his button down shirt and he looked like he counted his steps.
A pair of patrolmen, weapons raised, cautiously approached him.
“Stop!” the man shouted, his voice thin with fear. Jules stepped closer, eyes scanning the
bank. “I’m supposed to deliver a message then I have to go back.”
He looked over his shoulder, a half glance and Jules wondered if he had family in the
building or knew, as she suspected, that a gun was aimed at him.
Had she been lulled into a false sense of security these past weeks? Or did it all start up
again, here in LA rather than San Francisco?
Archer emerged from Command and she stepped closer to him. She couldn’t have said
why, not for protection or even for backup, but she knew he understood the sheer wrongness of this situation as well as she.
One of the patrolmen took another step closer. The man, voice rising, shouted again.
“Please! There are over thirty people in there.” He stopped, tried to take a breath but she
could see his struggle. “I’m supposed to only deliver a message.”
Archer stepped closer to the line, an imposing figure and clearly the man in charge. The
hostage seemed to recognize this as well, Jules saw his gaze land on Archer and hold.
“I’m supposed to tell you—”
A pair of shots rang out, pushing the man forward. He fell to the ground, blood pooling
beneath him. The bank doors closed.

About the Author( from her website in her own words))

Who is Isabel Roman?

The short answer is:

A sci-fi loving, movie watching, occassionally paranormal, mostly erotic romance writer with way too many ideas and so little time to write them all down.

The longer answer:

Currently I'm addicted to NCIS reruns on USA, and hope to catch all the just-past season on reruns some place. With summer, I don't plan on working on my garden, I have bad allergies, but do plan on enjoying the outside and, more importantly, the warmth! I adore the beach, walking, and reading. I don't enjoy messing with Dreamweaver, but that's what I chose as my website program. The 1000+ book that didn't come with it is a big help and a better deadweight.

Not all my stories are paranormal but the majority are: Druids, werewolves, vampires, ghosts, maybe even a genie or two. One or two of my stories aren't erotica, either, but they're all filled with tension.

You can visit Isabel at IsabelRoman.com and enter to win an Amazon Kindle Fire HD! (only 4 things to do--go for it!)
