Limousine Service to the Rescue!

Thursday, February 28, 2013

Limousine Service is great when you need to get someplace and there is no where to safely leave your car once you get there. It can also be a lifesaver if you are visiting a different state, like California and really have to be at that meeting in a couple of hours. Let’s face it—business travelers sometimes fly in and out of wherever they have a meeting in one day. They get to their destination and have maybe an hour to get to the location. California is a big state! Public transportation, if they even know where it is or where it will drop them off, takes too long. Renting a car—well—a possibility if you know exactly where you are going and how to get there, but then there is that notorious traffic-will you know how to get around it? Limo rental service in San Jose will pick you up, take you to the location and then come back to get you when the meeting is over if you make the arrangements, so you do not miss that plane back home or to another meeting in another state!

Another very good and important use of a limousine service would be to ferry your high school graduates to and from their after graduation activities—or on New Years Eve. I know that lots of parents are teaming together to rent a limousine for the evening for just such purposes!! As a matter of fact—more people who are going to a party which will last a long time should probably take advantage of these services as well—then at least if you will be drinking—you won’t be driving!

Silver Threads: Ways to Wear Metallics For Spring 2013

It’s back to the future for the fashion world, with spring 2013’s hottest trend: yes, you guessed it – metallics. Maybe it’s down to last year’s Olympics, but we’re fascinated with all that glitters this season. If metallics don’t take up serious real estate in your wardrobe, it’s time to get trending.

Sophisticated and cutting-edge, metallics are subtly sexy for a night out – there’s something about this style that just can’t do casual – whether it’s a blazer or a stunning dress, metallics always look chic. But back off this style if you’re not willing to make a statement, as metallic wear is definitely an eye-catcher.

The Many Faces Of Metallics

When it comes to shoes, these stunning heels in metallic shades look designed for offensive weaponry rather than pounding pavements. From gunmetal stilettoes to hanging chains, you can punk-up any outfit with some silver/gold/bronze detailing.

That’s not to say that metallics can’t be feminine too – flirty pencil skirts and pretty silhouettes are always a fantastic way to add a little glam girliness to your outfit. Metallic brocade, for example, has a timeless femininity that suits every age.

Touchable Textures

Pastel has been having a moment, but metallics take this palette and make it shine! The textured alternatives are so touchable that they put faux snakeskin to shame. If you really want to unabashedly go for the sci-fi silvers, then don’t look back! Take the streets with your hi-def, chunky silver bags, outfits, or pumps. Heavy metal is definitely in right now.

Word of warning, satin can be a bit much to handle, as it’s positively glowing when metallic. Style tip: balance the eye-watering satin gloss with matte clothes or wear at night time to burn bright on the dance floor.

Break All The Rules

Gorgeous golds can make you look as if you just stepped out of a Gustav Klimt painting…in a good way (nothing like a bit of fashion to make you feel cultured!). Don’t be afraid to match silver and gold together; rules are meant to be broken.

Accessorise

Hologram clutches and 3D handbags are all the rage right now. Be sure to match all your outfits with a metallic bag for consistency. You can buy silver jewellery online; in fact, with Valentine’s Day next month, maybe it’s time to start dropping hints about a stunning metal necklace to carry off your statement outfits.

Neutrals

Do you stick with neutral colors for easily-put-together ensembles? When you need to get ready in five minutes flat, we understand that wearable outfits are a must. Try this: substitute your neutral clothes for a palette of metallic bronzes, golds, silvers, and pastels. Immediately, your metallics function just as your neutral clothes did, except they’re far more interesting, fantastic, and drop-dead-gorgeous. Bye-bye boring browns, and hello shimmery metallics!

The Men Are At It Too!

When it comes to this trend, there’s no battle between the sexes. For the springtime weather, the boys have been seen supporting candy wrapper raincoats and metallic suits. Everyone’s happy – and that’s what we like to see.

This post has been contributed by Zoe, a British fashion and beauty blogger who’s looking forward to dressing in springtime outfits! She has written this post today for vintage and costume jewelery company Pearl & Butler.

Book Review/Giveaway-Soul Control–C. Elizabeth (YA Paranormal Romance)-3/16

This contest is officially over. The winner of the book "Soul Control" is #35.

Tina Kohrman said... 35

No, I have not read any of her books but I am hoping to . Thanks for the chance to win this!
March 9, 2013 at 9:17 AM

Congratulations Tina! You are in for a really great read. All that has to be done now is to reply to the email I will be sending in just a few minutes with your full name and mailing address and I will mail the book out to you!

C. Elizabeth has done it again. She is fast becoming one of my favorite authors!! Honestly I rarely read books with devils, demons, angels etc in them much less those written for young adult paranormal romance readers—but this one I read in ONE sitting.

The story begins innocently enough. Four teenage girls, all with different personalities, (think high school clique) who live in a small nothing ever goes on town (I grew up in one-believe me this brought back memories) hear that some new guys are moving in with their father. Now being normal teenage girls, but with vastly different personalities, they are “dying” to meet them. Of course what story would not be complete without a “male friend” who really wants to be with one of them who considers him just a friend and one of the other girls has always really secretly wanted to be with him!

The storyline really starts heating up when Saydi is lent a book by one of the drop dead gorgeous triplets. Her Mom has a melt down-forbids her to read it (since when did that stop a teenage girl) and proceeds to fall desperately in love, beyond even her comprehension. Meanwhile strange, really bad things are happening in surrounding towns.

When Saydi’s father, who she had been told died when she was very young, shows up—well let’s just say---you gotta read it to believe it!!! The forces of good vs evil come into play and the twists and turns are amazing!!

From the back of the book:

“Lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil.”

These words rang true for seventeen-year-old Saydi Gardiner upon discovering her ancestry. But if she has any doubts, further confirmation is forthcoming and it comes in the form of a wickedly gorgeous Nathanael Braxton, when he steals her heart and cuddles into her soul—the last place the boy should be.

Nineteen-year-old Nathanael’s unrelenting good looks aren’t the only thing that make him dangerous—and he knows it! However, his caring half-human self struggles with a loyalty—a loyalty that binds him to the hunt for the soul that will give his family the power they seek. There’s only one problem: When he finds her, Nathanael fall in love with his prey—Saydi.

Your teenagers will love this book and so will you!!

If You Own a Gun-Do You Keep it SAFELY Locked Up

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

This post is NOT about whether people should own guns or they should not own guns. I will leave that to the politicians and the NRA to fight out (or maybe I shouldn’t-they can’t seem to make up their minds about anything these days). However I do have a strong opinion on gun ownership, whether that gun is owned by a police officer, a homeowner or a store owner or even a hunter. Guns should always be kept locked up in an inaccessible place to any one but you.

There are too many guns ending up in the hands of young people these days that for one reason or another think it is cool to take their parents legally owned guns and show them off to their friends. Or the child is so distraught that they think that pulling a gun on someone will make them more popular or that it will give them a sense of being in charge. That these guns go off unintentionally in the hands of these youngsters, sometimes hurting themselves and sometimes hurting others seems to be a fact of life these days. Then we have the people who have mental problems who somehow get their hands on their parents legally owned guns. These people don’t necessarily know what they are doing and can not be blamed—the gun owner should be! Heck, even Dick Cheney unintentionally shot someone on a hunting trip. And all those people who end up dead because illegal guns were used in an apartment next door—the bullets go through the walls. Unintentional, but death or a gun shot wound is tragic all the same.

So, to conclude, if you are going to own a gun of any type—please lock it up-in a place no one but you can find it and double lock it into a gun safe where you are the only one who knows the combination or where the key is.

Book Review-It’s Nothing Personal – Kate O’Reilley

If you have ever been involved with lawyers this book will get to you. I was embroiled once in a case where someone I worked with was accused of something he could not have done—5 years later he was finally proved innocent-after spending 5 years in jail. Because I was served with a subpoena my life was hell for those five years as well. I was harassed by both sides—the lawyers calling me at midnight to make sure I hadn’t gone anywhere—a policeman who knew me through a different job threatening me if I went against the cop who accused this man of something he didn’t do! I can not begin to explain the mood swings, the depression, the absolute fear I went and was put through. I barely slept for those five years. And I can attest to the fact that it certainly is personal—though the lawyers try to tell you after the fact that it wasn’t!! Kate O’Reilley has put this into words. So when I read this book I kind of re lived those years all over again—that said—this is a fast paced very well written book and the story line all too believable. I highly recommend this book to anyone-but especially those who like medical and/or legal thrillers!! I think I am going to go and buy her other book-In Good Hands-Kate O’Reilley is one heck of a good suspense writer!!

From the back of the book:

On a chilly January morning, anesthesiologist Dr. Jenna Reiner made her daily drive to St. Augustine Hospital, completely unaware that her life was about to change forever. One of the surgical scrub technicians in her hospital has been stealing syringes and infecting patients with hepatitis C. The battle against the thieving surgical tech was only the beginning. Jenna Reiner was about to begin the fight of her life—the fight for her reputation, her pride, and her sanity. Beautifully composed, and inspired by true events, It’s Nothing Personal is a suspenseful, riveting, and emotional thriller which chronicles the story of faith and fortitude when an innocent woman finds herself surrounded by corruption and greed.

About the Author: (from Pump up you Book)

Kate O’Reilley is a physician, specializing in anesthesiology. In late 2009, Kate was plunged into a painful battle in a high-profile, medical malpractice suit. The calamity that ensued nearly destroyed Kate and her family. After the suit ended and the wounds started to heal, Kate was urged by close friends and co-workers to document her experiences. The words flowed, and It’s Nothing Personal was born from Kate’s journey through her temporary hell.

Kate’s second book, In Good Hands, is a moving, gripping, and tragic story of an anesthesiologist who dispenses her own version of justice after being the innocent victim of a brutal crime.

Kate currently resides in Colorado with her husband and beautiful daughter. In her spare time, she enjoys running, writing, reading, and spending time with her family. Her vacations are always spent in Hawaii, a place that Kate and her family hold dear to their hearts. Having lived on Oahu while her daughter was young, Kate and her family relish the day when they can return to the islands permanently.

This book can be purchased at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and where ever fine books are sold!!

PayDay Loans—Borrower BEWARE!!

Sunday, February 24, 2013

I have heard and read about PayDay loans for many years now, long before I started blogging—even considered taking one out at some point but never did. Something about them just didn’t sit right with me. Well, it turns out I was correct. Baby, my cat decided once again to wake me up at 2:30 AM—so I turned on the computer and saw that The New York Times had an article about it! Click to read the entire story--

Major Banks Aid in Payday Loans Banned by States
By JESSICA SILVER-GREENBERG
Published: February 23, 2013

Now very little in this article surprised me—What I did not know was that these loans have been banned in 15 states!! I was not surprised that the big banks were actually helping these scalpers-which is what they are in my opinion-the interest rates they are charging is nothing short of criminal! According to the article these rates can sometimes exceed 500%. From what I have heard over the years you would actually be better off borrowing from a loan shark (DO NOT do this either-but their rates are supposedly lower then those stated in the article).

As a blogger I get numerous “spam” comments daily—which I am sure everyone else does as well—the bulk of them are for cheap priced prescription drugs or lately PayDay loans—I dutifully delete these comments as I am sure many others do as well. Most times they are marked as spam by my email and are easily deleted—some manage to sneak through-but I get rid of them as well—It now makes sense to me why they are having people sneak these ads into blog post comments—A lot if not all are in other countries-having been banned here-where the laws are not so harsh.

I suggest you click into the above article and read it—it will open your eyes wide and hopefully you will never take out one of these “loans”.

Book Review- Plague – H.W. “Buzz” Bernard

Friday, February 22, 2013

Yikes—This is one of those books where you can almost imagine it really happening. The thought scared me to death! Imagine a microbiologist who is also a terrorist who has a vendetta against America and he is about to unleash a genetically engineered FATAL virus which is airborne in the United States. All the directors of the company he is hiding in are killed in an airplane accident and a CEO has to be found quickly. Enter Richard Wainwright-a brilliant CEO who can take over a company even temporarily-BUT-he is hands on and intuits that something is not right. There are many twists and turns in this novel and one of the twists at the end I didn’t see coming.

If you like science fiction (which could actually happen) and a fast paced book—this one is for you. I highly recommend you read it!!

About the Book:

Deep in the secret recesses of a Cold War lab, the Russians created tons of deadly bio-weapons. Now, decades later, a protege of that Russian research is about to release weaponized Ebola into the heart of the South's most iconic city: Atlanta, where the symbols of American "decadence" range from a happily diverse population to the Coca-Cola museum and CNN headquarters.
A preliminary test of the horrifying virus demonstrates the unspeakable suffering of its victims--and alerts the Centers for Disease Control that a terrible pandemic is in the making. CDC Virologist Dr. Dwight Butler begins a frantic effort to track down the source of the virus before it's too late.
For new BioDawn CEO Richard Wainwright, it quickly becomes clear that the "accidental" plane crash that killed the pharmaceutical company's entire executive hierarchy may have some connection to the evolving threat. Suddenly, Richard is being stalked by a hit woman. He and Butler join forces to find the lone terrorist at the center of a plan that could unleash the Black Plague of the 21st century.

This book and his other books can be purchased at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and where fine books are sold!

About the Author:

H. W. “Buzz” Bernard is a writer and retired meteorologist. His debut novel, Eyewall, which one reviewer called a “perfect summer read,” was released in May 2011 and went on to become a best-seller in Amazon’s Kindle Store.
His second novel, Plague, came out in September 2012.
He’s currently at work on his third novel, Supercell.
Before retiring, Buzz worked at The Weather Channel in Atlanta, Georgia, as a senior meteorologist for 13 years. Prior to that, he served as a weather officer in the U.S. Air Force for over three decades. He attained the rank of colonel and received, among other awards, the Legion of Merit.
His “airborne” experiences include a mission with the Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters, air drops over the Arctic Ocean and Turkey, and a stint as a weather officer aboard a Tactical Air Command airborne command post (C-135).
In the past, he’s provided field support to forest fire fighting operations in the Pacific Northwest, spent a summer working on Alaska’s arctic slope, and served two tours in Vietnam. Various other jobs, both civilian and military, have taken him to Germany, Saudi Arabia and Panama.
He’s a native Oregonian and attended the University of Washington in Seattle where he earned a bachelor’s degree in atmospheric science; he also studied creative writing.
Buzz currently is vice president of the Southeastern Writers Association. He’s a member of International Thriller Writers, the Atlanta Writers Club and Willamette Writers.

He and his wife Christina live in Roswell, Georgia, along with their fuzzy and sometimes overactive Shih-Tzu, Stormy.

I WAS Spammed and Almost SCAMMED!!

Thursday, February 21, 2013

That's right--me. As a lot of you know I am looking feverishly for a job to replace the one I left at the end of December. The other day I paid to have my resume send to a whole lot of places on the internet. Being kind of old school I am not totally sure about how you apply for jobs on-line and I guess it showed!! I received 5 emails almost immediately about what seemed to be the same job-for at home work (data entry w/some bookkeeping). 4 of them did not look right to me and I deleted them. The 5th was very well written and grammatically correct. So-I wrote back. I received an email stating that I should add this person to my Yahoo messenger and the interview would be conducted there--I did so--passed with flying colors (this person really knew the questions to ask!) and was "hired". I was told that I would be receiving a check for all software, etc needed and would have to buy from "their" vendor. Ok-I could live with that--but when I asked where the vendor was located--well they could not answer me. We left off that I would wait for the check, find out from my bank how long it would take to clear then proceed from there. I was supposed to call her at 9 tomorrow morning-I won't be-I signed off--there were one too many inconsistencies and the company was Goldman Sachs, the investment banking firm.

So--after being happy for about 15 minutes I began to seriously wonder--Goldman Sachs is in NYC and I live near NYC so I went to their website and got their phone number. I explained to the woman who answered why I was calling and she directed me to the security department. It was definitely a SCAM. I forwarded the email and the entire IM conversation to him!! If I ever receive that check--I will forward to them as well and if I receive the laptop--RETURN TO SENDER!! I am not too thrilled with Spammers, but sometimes what they write is almost funny and some of them do try to tell you how they "love" your blog. HOWEVER--I HATE SCAMMERS. This is the first time this has happened to me--and hopefully the last!!

The good news is I did not cancel my interview with an employment agency tomorrow. Maybe tomorrow will be my lucky day-and they will have some kind of a temporary part time or part time job not too far from where I live!!

The Bronze and the Brimstone-YA –Lory S. Kaufman

This is the sequel to The Lens and the Looker. My review can be found under the subject books on the left side of my blog. It is the 2nd book in the History Camp series. It is every bit as good and entertaining. It is filled with action, predicaments and love. Of course Pan, our friendly troublemaking genie is still in residence trying his darndest to keep these teens from serious trouble—but do teens ever listen—of course not! They have to learn things on their own. This series (one more to go) will definitely be liked by both boys and girls and adults. I REALLY suggest you read both these books and then let your teens read it (you might not get it back if they read it first!!).

From the back of the book:

What could go wrong in the 14th century for three time-traveling teens? How about – EVERYTHING!

Hansum, Shamira and Lincoln, three teens from the 24th century, are trapped in 14th century Verona, Italy. They’ve survived many deadly experiences by keeping their wits about them and by introducing futuristic technology into the past. Principal among these inventions is the telescope, which brought them to the attention of the rich and powerful.

But standing out can get you into unexpected and dangerous situations. The nobles of Verona now believe Hansum is a savant, a genius inventor, especially since he brings them plans for advanced cannons and black powder. Being the center of attention is great, but the potential for trouble is now exponentially greater because people are watching Hansum’s every move.

Meanwhile, artistic genus Shamira has fallen for a Florentine artist with bloody and disasterous consequences. Lincoln, considered an incompetent back home in the 24th century, has blossomed—at least until he is shot in the head with an arrow. And Hansum, after secretly marrying his new master’s beautiful daughter, Guilietta, is offered the hand in marriage of lady Beatrice, daughter of the ruler of Verona. To refuse could mean calamity for all the teens.

Amazingly, none of this is their biggest challenge. Because a rash illness is spreading across Verona—and it is threatening to consume everyone

Do they have a future in this past?

Once in a Wildlife: Family Days out for Animal Lovers

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Has it been too long since your last family trip out? There are plenty of options across the country for animal-lovers. Whether you’re into your crocs or your camels, you can find them all in the UK, without booking a flight ticket.

Longleat Safari Park

First of its kind, outside of Africa, Longleat Safari Park has been open since 1966. This ground-breaking safari park gets its name from the wonderful Longleat House – a fine example of Elizabethan architecture that still stands today, and one of the most beautiful stately homes in the UK. Other than the exotic animals you can find in the safari park, you can really make a day of it by visiting all fifteen attractions on offer.

Chester Zoo

Proclaimed one of the top 15 zoos in the world, Chester Zoo is conservation-focused, and with 11,000 animals to discover, you’ll have to come back another day just to say you’ve seen it all. With 100% of your donations going directly to animals struggling in the wild, it’s well worth digging deep to help these beautiful and endangered creatures.

Knowsley Safari Park

Knowsley Safari Park can boast one of the most majestic and endangered herds in the animal kingdom – the Pere David’s deer went officially extinct in the wild, and have been successfully reintroduced in China. This is another safari park that’s based in the grounds of a stately home. Knowsley Hall dates back to 1385 and was recently used as the set of Coronation Street’s Christmas Special!

Edinburgh Zoo

Situated in one of the most beautiful cities in the UK, Edinburgh zoo must be pretty chilly for some of the more exotic animals. Nevertheless, it still stands as one of the leading centers of conservation, research, and education. Safari rides are available and you’ll get an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the animals.

After you’ve finished marveling at the 1,000 rare and endangered creatures, you can head over to Edinburgh castle for another Scottish attraction. They’re even open on Christmas Day!

ZSL London Zoo

With 90% of people willing to recommend London Zoo, they hardly need to promote themselves. You can grab yourself a milkshake outside Penguin Beach and head on down to the Reindeer enclosure – who ever said you needed to travel to Lapland to meet Rudolf? London Zoo is great for days out with the kids during the festive season.

Howletts Wild Animal Park

One of the most popular animals at Howletts, the Canadian Timber Wolf is a wild dog that’s played its part in legend for hundreds of years. Misunderstood and hunted by man since time immemorial. In the UK, wolves were exceptionally numerous in the Roman and Saxon period. Yet, this beautiful animal was driven to extinction by deforestation and a bounty system. By the reign of King Henry VII, it’s generally thought that wolves had been exterminated. But the beautiful wolves in Howletts are still very much living, so come and visit them today.

This is the story of a family who moved to Minnesota from the Boston area back in the time of the civil war and Indian uprisings. It is the story of their everyday life—the ups and downs, the joys and the worries. It depicts how people stuck together and helped each other. When an Indian family shows up at their door with a very pregnant wife-she is helped-and a son is born. That act of kindness is repaid-how I will not tell you or I will give away part of the story! It is also the story of a true love—between a husband and wife of long standing and the sweet romance and marriage of a young couple.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this—it was refreshing. I will be watching out for the sequel!

PREFACE (from the E-Book)

The name Minnesota is based on the Dakota Sioux Indian word for sky tinted water, which refers to the Minnesota River and the state's many lakes.
Before European settlement of North America, Minnesota was populated by the Dakota people. As Europeans settled the east coast, Native American movement caused migration of Native Americans into the Minnesota area.
Treaties between European settlers and the Dakota and Ojibwe gradually forced the natives off their lands and on to smaller reservations. As conditions deteriorated for the Dakota, tensions rose, leading to the Dakota War of 1862. The result of the six–week war was the execution of 38 Dakota — the largest mass execution in United States history — and the exile of most of the rest
of the Dakota to the Crow Creek Reservation in Dakota Territory. As many as 800 white settlers died during the uprising.

Sky Tinted Water and the second book in the series, Sky Dance are fiction novels 'loosely' themed around several events of the Civil War and the Dakota Sioux uprising in Minnesota.

Book Review/Giveaway-Buzzard Bay–Bob Ferguson-Ends 3/9

This contest is officially closed. The winning number, as picked at Random.org is #17. Thank you everyone who entered.

I do enjoy thrillers.
Thanks for the chance.
February 27, 2013 at 6:14 PM

I will be sending Klydra an email in just a few minutes. All she has to do is reply to that email within 48 hours with her full name and mailing address and I will mail this book out to her.

When farming in Canada takes a nose dive – three families decide to take a chance and agree to a deal to farm in the Bahamas. Nothing goes smoothly and the story actually begins with Bob, husband to July a blond bombshell, running for his life through the icy snow fields near his home in Canada to avoid being murdered by the hit men sent to kill him and the other two families! July is still in the Bahamas and Bob is bound and determined to go and rescue her. One thing I have to insert here-Bob and July were totally in love with each other—no one could tear that love apart. It almost seemed that Bob was always trying to find July! If I say much more I will give away the plot—but I will say that there better be a sequel to this book-----I want to know what happened!!!!!

From the back of the book:

Bob Green and his family get the opportunity of a lifetime by becoming involved in a new farming project on the Bahamas. A plane crash confirms his suspicions as to why the farm has been operating at a loss. The project is not what it seems on the outside. The discovery of drugs on the airplane put all their lives in jeopardy. Instead of leaving well enough alone, Green decides to fight back. He becomes involved in a world of intrigue, sex, violence and drugs. In doing so, he finds out there is a fine line between good and evil.
An assassination attempt in Canada goes terribly wrong during a vicious snowstorm. When the sky clears and the bodies pile up, it becomes quite apparent that this was no hunting accident. Two men escaped. Bob Green was motivated by the love of his wife and family. Henekie, by the death of his best friend and mentor, but mostly by greed. Unwittingly, these two bitter enemies become embroiled in a bitter power struggle between a Columbian drug lord and the CIA in the Bahamas.

About the author (from the back of the book):

As a young boy, the author lived in a remote area of Canada, without electricity or telephones. His evenings were spent listening to an old battery operated radio and daydreaming of faraway places. Later in life, he traveled extensively. His travels to the Bahamas and their stories stirred his imagination and were the root for this novel. The author and his wife live in Fiji. Their children and grandchildren live in Canada.
