A Productive Shopping Day--For a Change!

Friday, December 27, 2013

Normally I take my Mom out on Saturdays to do her weekly shopping. Turns out she was invited out to dinner on Saturday evening thus the Friday jaunt. She has had a rather large gift card to Macy's given to her by a group she led in Poetry reading--and she had it from last winter!! Talk burning a hole in her pocketbook!! Well-she is not going to be a snow bird this year but will be going down to visit some friends in Florida for about 10 days. Macy's was having a sale on luggage which she decided she needed. Thus it was decided that I should pick her up at 10:30 and head right over there. They have thousands of pieces of luggage and of course being my Mom she had to look at each one to see which was the lightest (she is 91!)--of course she found one, finally, that she liked and we went to the register. What I did not know was that in addition to the gift cards she had a coupon for 15% off (the REAL reason we just had to go today!)--

This is the one she got but the pic is from a different site! It is A Ricardo Tiburon Spinner 24" 6.9 lbs.

Okay--we finally get the darn thing paid for and my Mom says-you do deliver that for free correct? It seems she had seen that in the newspaper! Well the poor girl says NO--UH OH--so I calmly asked her to please call over her manager which she did. Well it turns out that you have to order direct from the warehouse-whether the cashier does it for you or you do it yourself online makes no difference. Well the manager finally decided that the easiest way to deal with my Mom whose hearing aides seemed not to be working too well for some strange reason-was to cancel the sale and then redo it by ordering direct--Yes, my Mom got her luggage (which was on a great sale) with an additional 15% off and free delivery to her house!! She even ended up with $1.17 left on the gift card! By now I was about to spit nails and needed a ladies room rather badly, but she was determined to make me look for boots because I had $50.00 Gift Cert to Macy's. When there were no boots that I could wear in the snow there all of a sudden we had to look at pocketbooks---I made a beeline for a ladies room leaving her browsing. Guess she realized I was not going to look so once I returned we headed back to the car. Think this day was over? Not by a long shot---I did manage to stop and get cat food which I desperately needed and we had a light lunch at the Outback. By this time I had handed her the GC and she needs a toaster oven--maybe, hopefully she can find one online!! Boots were still on her mind.

So off down Central Avenue I drive--I vetoed STRONGLY going into DSW but said okay to the Avenue since that was where I found a pair of boots 5 years ago (which, by now, have a hole in the sole). Nothing there. Luckily I passed a gas station with prices that she agreed with because I was almost out of gas!! All of a sudden she tells me about a store on the opposite side of Central Avenue that carries wide widths---okay--illegal left and we get to the store. I felt bad for the salesman--he must have brought out 10 pair of boots for me to try--BUT one of them actually fit and were comfortable--expensive but I really do have miserable feet to fit and these should last another 5 years or so--I do not have a pic of them--they are black, totally waterproof, zip up the front and are lined with comfy cozy material. Leave it to my Mom--she asks the guy if there is a senior discount-I told him her age and mine--so we got $12.00 off! People--ASK--you NEVER know!!

I found this pic from a different store online from where I actually bought them. The brand is ToeWarmers out of Ontario, Canada-the name of the shoe is Jennifer.

Now my Mom was happy-she got her suitcase and I got boots--so off to a grocery store where thankfully she really did not need too much this time--then to Walgreens where she has a rain check for a specific vitamin she needs to take. Well, they still don't have them in and she was driving the manager crazy--so--he told her to hold on to the raincheck and gave her a different dosage (she will have to take 2 pills instead of one)-for 1/2 price! At this point I drove her home and then got myself home to a cat who was meowing at me the second I opened the door! She was not a happy camper--Mommy was out for too many hours!!

I downloaded this from google, I think it is from Debee109 called Cattitude Photo

So that was my day--I have a feeling I will be going to sleep early tonight!!

Buying shoes is my least favorite thing to do and I only do it when shopping alone so I can take my sweet time. I'm actually looking forward to senior discounts hahahahah

I simply do not go shopping with my mother. Ever. Way too frustrating, she thinks that 'they' are all out to get her.

Wow what a long day you had. BUT your mom did get an awesome deal on the luggage. :) My mom is the same way though, so don't feel bad. hahaha!

That great that you take the time out of your busy schedule to help your mom out, I wish my mom stayed a little closer so I can do the same & she could spend more time with her grand kids

I feel for you. My dad is 86 and the exact same way about shopping. I try to just buy what he needs and take it to him.

This sounds like a trip with my own mother. I would much prefer to shop and have it delivered to her than go shopping with her. Well at least you got your boots. :)

I avoid shopping with my mom. She drives me batty every time we go! But you did get some fabulous deals while you were out! I really like the boots!

I love shopping with my mother, we always have the best time and I always get lunch out of it too! Now my father is a different story, he is impossible to shop with, but I also get lunch out of it. I dislike shopping with my kids, that is a nightmare. Anyone else, its like a vacation LOL

Nice boots and seems that you and your mom are now content and happy from your productive shopping. Merry Christmas!

The important part was that you got to spend some quality time with your mother which is so important, especially during the holidays.

Whoah! Busy shopping day!! Kudos to you for being able to do so much in one day - I'd go nuts. Amazing deals also. Wish I could score a suitcase for a buck.
