Collecting Coins-for Profit and Education!

Thursday, March 7, 2013

Do you collect coins? Although I have never collected valuable coins, I know many who have. Some people collect coins that are no longer in circulation. Some, as a hedge against inflation, collect coins made out of precious metals, silver, gold and even platinum. Let’s face it—these coins will never lose their total value like stocks can. The U.S. Money Reserve is one of the better places to find out more about using precious metal coins to protect your assets. I also believe firmly that there is an educational component to coin collecting. Have you ever gone to a coin expo? I have gone to a couple. It is at these expos that you can sometimes find old and rare coins of every type and talk to knowledgeable people-they love to answer your questions! My questions are mostly about the history of the coins.

As a child I remember my grandfather showing me his coin collection. Each one was bright and shiny. I would be allowed to take one of them out of the velvet lined box at a time. Then my grandfather would give me a little history lesson. My interest in history definitely began with the descriptions of these coins! This was a favorite pastime of mine. Just looking at that shiny coin and then after the little lesson my imagination would take flight. I would daydream about being in that time when all this was happening. (I always did have a very good imagination). When the government first started minting quarters for each state in the union-I began collecting them. I ultimately gave them to a friend’s son. I actually enjoyed looking to see if I had found a new state to add to my collection (or to his). It intrigued me to see what was depicted on each of them about each state and then to do some more research on the subject.

Coin collecting, whether to protect your assets or for educational purposes or just because you want to can be a gratifying hobby-one that I recommend highly!

I used to have a container of coins when I was little. It sat up high on my book shelf. My parents always told me never to play with it because someday it would be worth money... so I always opened it up and looked at them. I remember the coins were different than any I had ever seen. I never knew what happened to those. I'm very curious.

My grandpa collected coins and gave them to my dad. We thought they were so cool when we were little.

I have a collection that has been passed down through generations and I plan to keep it going. I love the stories that come with it as much as the coins themselves.
