Show support with Pink for October

A great many lives have been touched by breast cancer. Whether you've been diagnosed or a loved one has battled the disease, you’ll want to take a stand for breast cancer awareness. It’s something you can do 365 days a year, but it’s particularly apt during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The awareness movement is a highly organized one, and there are countless ways that you can show support.

Provide Support for Women Needing Breast Reconstruction

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons performed a survey that found that seven out of 10 women are never apprised of their breast reconstruction options. To help raise awareness of the options, the Society is sponsoring breast reconstruction awareness days where women can learn about the various surgeries that are available to them. If you’d like to support their efforts, you can purchase the song “Flower,” sung by recording artist Jewel. Proceeds of song sales support the fund for breast reconstruction awareness.

Run or Walk for Hope

October is a great time to get involved in a fundraising run or walk. It’s a wonderful way to show your support and get in a little healthy exercise. Events like these happen all across the country throughout the year, so if you missed an event in October, you’ll probably have another chance. When you sign up, you’ll pledge to raise a certain amount of money that will be donated to a related cause like cancer research.

Reach Out on Social Media

Websites like Facebook and Twitter have been doing their share to spread the word. You’ll find a Breast Cancer Awareness page on Facebook that can put you in touch with many fundraising organizations and can help you find creative ways to show your support.

Be on the Lookout for Community Events

Pretty nearly every community in the United States is hosting a number of awareness and fundraising events. In Reno, Nevada, for instance, a local spa is offering breast cancer survivors free half hour treatments. The staff is also donating part of the money received for other treatments performed to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. A Reno coffeeshop is donating half of their sales for an entire day to the Reno Saint Mary’s Foundation. Italian restaurant Zozo’s is donating money every time a customer orders their meatballs and marinara appetizer. Ling & Louie’s Asian Bar and Grill has designed a special pink ribbon cosmo. Customers who order the beverage should know that part of the proceeds from the sale of each drink goes to Susan G. Komen. Many other business owners in Reno are offering similar specials, and chances are good that the same kinds of things are happening in your city. It’s the perfect opportunity to support a local business and promote awareness.
Buy Pink Products

There’s an amazing collection of products you can buy that support breast cancer research, treatment and awareness. Consider buying the gorgeous Cook for the Cure edition of the KitchenAid Stand Mixer. It costs about $300, and $50 of each sale benefits the Komen Foundation. Warby Parker is known for making some of the most stylish eyeglass frames around. Buy their Japhy frame in a pretty pink hue, and the company will donate $50 to education and research for breast cancer. Get the chic, affordable Ralph Lauren Pink Pony Organic Eco Tote for just $10. This tote is an environmentally friendly choice and the entire proceeds from the sale go directly to Ralph Lauren’s Pink Pony Fund for Cancer Care and Prevention. For just $18, you can purchase the Very Hollywood Michael Kors Breast Cancer Awareness Eau de Parfum Rollerball and Lipgloss. This charming and fashionable set lets you raise breast cancer awareness in style. Even department store giant Macy’s is getting in on the giving with the gorgeous International Concepts Breast Cancer Research Foundation Pink Sheath. Five percent of the sale of this dress benefits Macy’s Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

There are so many ways to donate or to simply show support for breast cancer awareness. Choose the one that works for you and get involved with your local community.
