FEEDING AMERICA--Give Away-ends 2/10/11

Sunday, January 9, 2011

 WINNER IS #56 DEBBIE M

Feeding America‘s (previously known as America’s Second Harvest) website will give you information on everything to do with hunger in this country and how to help combat it. Or to get help if you need it!! Some of the statistics are frightening--

Here are the answers to 3 of the 10 questions on their Hunger Quiz:

1. Not having access to enough food to sustain a healthy life is a reality for one in six Americans, including children and seniors.

2. Hunger is not an issue just for the people who struggle with poverty and homelessness. Only 12% of the clients are homeless and 36% of individuals served by the Feeding America network have at least one working adult in their households.

3. According to the USDA, more than 14 million children are living in food-insecure households. School lunch programs do help, but they don’t solve the whole problem.

I encourage you to go to Feeding America’s website and take this quiz!! It is an eye opener!!

This is the national organization which distributes to the network food bank partners around the country. There is a food bank locator for you to look up which of the network members serves your community. If you can volunteer time—they tell you what you can do.

Now the Give Away:

One lucky winner will get 2 Mixes and 1 Spice of their choice from DoYouBake?

Mandatory Entry: Go to FeedingAmerica.org and tell me one thing you didn’t know. If you take the quiz what answer surprised you the most-

One thing I learned this morning was that the average amount that someone in IL gets in SNAP (food stamps) is $4.50 per day. I am doing a challenge this week to eat on that amount each day!

I learned that Feeding America provides emergency food assistance to approximately 5.7 million different people per week. It is great that they are helping, but it makes me sad that in our country there are 5.7 million people a week who could be going hungry.

This hit home with me....1 in 4 children is still food insecure. We know that when children don’t receive adequate nutrition, particularly under the age of five, the long-term damage on their cognitive development cannot be restored. Must support CNR and ensure that SNAP is restored. Without these critical programs, FI might rise again.

The Feeding America network feeds over 37 million neighbors each year.

I am acutely aware of the lack of food, etc. to millions. Did you know that only 1 out of every 100 people in the world have a home to live in? That there are 100's of thousands of orphans in Haiti with no home, no food, no family. I wish I could scoop them up and take care of them. We donate to our food bank whenever we can. Hopefully it makes a small difference to someone.
